About this project
If you're a fan of Thrillbent style digital comics, TEMPLATE should be up your alley. All 20 weeks of the story (to date) can be read for FREE right here:
Come on back after you've checked it out!
The first trade of TEMPLATE will collect the first eight issues of our "Digital First" series in a 104 page, full color, trade paperback edition. Alongside the free version on my website, TEMPLATE can also be purchased in monthly collected editions (with bonus content) via iVerse's Comics Plus app.
TEMPLATE is an action thriller with cyberpunk flair. Centering on a private security organization called Oversight, the story chronicles their attempts to make the perfect android soldier. When the first attempt fails, they speed up plans to try again under the assumption they learned from their mistakes. It is at this point that the main character, Beta, is created. Over the course of the series, her development is followed as she explores her own personality and discovers what she can and can’t do not being in full control of herself.
Check out the first five pages of the story, presented in their full vertical oriented glory for the first time anywhere:
TEMPLATE is created by Quinton Miles (me) and Andres Quezada , who respectively handle the writing and art duties. Comics veteran Nathan Lumm is the colorist, while Martín Alberto Pérez Carrara (aka MaGnUs) is the letterer.
We've been actively working on TEMPLATE since November 2012, and haven't missed a beat, or a scheduled release date, since our launch back on April 3. We'll continue to publish the comic this way though the duration of this campaign to the end of its run on November 27. We'd like to get the TPB version in people's hands around this time as well, similar to what you'd see on a traditional print comic run, which is why we're doing this campaign now. We'll be doing that with the help of Ape Entertainment, an extremely reputable publisher who will be handling the printing and retail distribution of TEMPLATE provided this campaign is successful.
65 of the 90 story pages are fully completed, and we're on track to complete the rest in the next month or two working under the cycle we've been doing all along.
Occasionally, we release another form of content by way of OVERSIGHT DOSSIERS. This short video series provides information such as character bios, mission briefs and other items that compliment the main story found in the comic. These will also be included in the TPB edition, along with two brand new dossiers that will be a TPB exclusive.
This campaign is the final leg of what I'm hoping can become a distribution model for my creator-owned projects going forward. Establishing an audience as an unknown entity is an EXTREMELY difficult thing to do (check my previous failed KS campaigns for proof), so I'm thinking outside the box a bit to address that. Producing/releasing TEMPLATE the way we have is basically our way of putting our cards on the table and letting you know we're serious about this. If you think it's good enough, we're hopeful that'll lead to getting the support needed to build on that foundation and keep improving our outreach.
Read as much or as little as you want to come to your own conclusions (or to just hold off at your leisure), and if you'd like a print version of the entire story or just want to help us out, come on back and pledge for some cool stuff!
"They’re telling a story that stands out and doing it in a way that’s eye-catching and original. It’s a welcome addition to a growing format and a comic that should be getting more attention." - NerdSpan
"Miles writes an intriguing story. He creates a great set of characters and plays up the tension and mystery with Oversight." - Comic Book Therapy
"I may not have a lot of time for webcomics, but I liked TEMPLATE. It's futuristic sci-fi and that speaks to me." - Comic Bastards
"...shades of Universal Soldier and Ghost in the Shell, but with a conspiratorial dimension added that really makes this new comic stand firm. So bookmark accordingly." - The Lottery Party
"Very interesting story. This dove straight into the story and personally I felt drawn in from the start." - Analog Addiction
Quinton Miles: My work has been featured in a number of licensed video games from Oasys Mobile, including iCarly Mobile (with Nickelodeon) and Army Men: Mobile Ops (with Take Two Interactive). In 2010, I decided to pursue a career in writing comics and pitched nonstop to make that happen. When that amounted to a big pile of nothing, I launched QAMCOMICS.COM.
Andres Quezada: Andres Quezada is a freelance comic artist who resides in Mexico. And, as you’ll come to find out on TEMPLATE, is pretty damn good. Since starting TEMPLATE, he's also gone on to do some pin-up work for Ape Entertainment's relaunched Poison Elves series.
Nathan Lumm: In his own words: “I’ve colored comics for Image, Marvel, DC and many others. I got burnt out for the longest time and have been working in the advertising industry for the last 10 years. It seems I’m slowly getting pulled back into comics with freelance gigs here and there, and it’s actually fun again!” Check out Nathan’s Deviantart page to see more of his work!
MaGnUs: Martín Alberto Pérez Carrara, also known as MaGnUs, is a freelance writer and letterer I’ve more than happily worked with for nearly two years now. In addition to "My Life Without a Jetpack", he also recently launched his newest webcomic, Portent.
Here's a little more info our rewards. Check out the right side of the page for specifics on pledge amounts:
DRM-free PDF/CBR of TEMPLATE, Volume 1: A digital version of the 104 page trade paperback edition. Unlike the Digital First issues, this version is presented in a traditional vertical orientation with the original page layouts intact.
"Making Of" Book: This DRM-free CBR/PDF is our behind-the-scenes complimentary piece. It will contain the entire script for TEMPLATE, in addition to all of the sketches and misc. artwork from the series that helped create the book. It will also contain commentary on our process for certain pages that will shed some insight on why we did or didn't do certain things with the story.
Launch Day Variant Cover (KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE): For the first day of the campaign only, we're offering an extremely rare inked variant version of the cover, signed by me. This will ONLY be available for the campaign's first 24 hours, and will close at 9:00 AM ET on August 15. So grab one quick!
Note: For people who pledge above the $25 tier on Launch Day, I'll allow you swap the regular version out with this one if you want.
Beta Character Print: "This is a little pin-up I drew on my spare time; It is a humble homage to one of my favorite graphic artists (either in the field of comics or manga); Otomo Katsuhiro." - Andres
The "100% Andres" Variant Cover (KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE): Found in the $75 reward tier. If this campaign is successful, TEMPLATE will eventually have a print run in stores but this will be the ONLY place you can get this cover. As the name implies, it is drawn, inked, and colored by Andres Quezada.
Original, framed panels of art: Andres has a unique way of going about producing pages in that he first draws the panels and then uses them to construct a completed page. Because of that, we're able to offer a select number individual panels of art as part of the $125 pledge tier. These will be signed by Andres and framed up/numbered to look nice.
Coloring session with Nathan Lumm: TEMPLATE colorist Nathan Lumm is a comics vet that's worked with every major publisher you can think of. He's also a big believer in helping other colorists, which is why he also produces a video series on YouTube that goes into great detail on his process with some tips/tricks for others. In the $250 reward tier, Nathan will have a direct one-on-one session with you!
Get drawn into the book! Our highest pledge amount that permanently, and thematically, stamps your contribution into this universe's potential future mythology. The $400 tier gets your likeness drawn into the book as an important character with a speaking role. Since TEMPLATE is still in production, we've got time to work this in, but I don't want to get into too much detail at the risk of spoiling it. There are, however, enough existing plot threads for some to be able to put this together if you've been following the story! You'll also get the original panel of art with your appearance, framed and numbered.
The following is a complete estimate of where the funds in this campaign will go:
Printing of 1000 copies - $3500
Shipping (Domestic) - $500
Rewards - $500
Misc. (aka Known Unknowns) - $500
Kickstarter/Amazon Fees - $500
The amount above reflects the bare minimum needed to get the book printed and rewards out. Any excess funds would go towards taking care of extra fulfillment obligations and stretch goals first, then compensating the creative team.
I want to send out a huge thanks to the folks who have been following TEMPLATE since Day 1 on April 3, and a hello to the new people that are coming across it for the very first time now! We've been pouring our all into this and sincerely hope you've enjoyed the ride. For updates on TEMPLATE, as well as other QAM Comics stuff, be sure to follow us:
If you are on social media and talking about TEMPLATE, be sure to use the hashtag #betalives so we can see it. We'll definitely be retweeting!
Risks and challenges
This has been an AMAZING and extremely reliable creative team to work with. We've been on this project for close to a year now and haven't missed a beat, so on that front the risk is very little since the book is almost done. I don't forsee any hiccups on the rewards front, but if there are, you guys will be the very first to know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
