Goal

Our Goal for Qanvas
Our Goal for Qanvas

Our goal is to create a cross platform photo editor that can create anything from scratch and at the same time being easy to use with a low learning curve. Being able to quickly and easily create anything from scratch is what is going to make it special from the competition. Of course, it’s going to have your usual tools for photo editing, but editing isn’t the primary focus of this app. Photo creation is the focus. It will also have beautiful modern design that not only looks great but is also functional. It will be cheap enough so that everyone can get access. Also it will be powerful and feature rich to be considered a full-fledge photo editor. Also it will offer performance fast and fluid with a responsiveness of at least 60 fps to make it feel more natural.

Where we are today

Today we have an app in the early alpha phase of development.

File Explorer
File Explorer

When you first open Qanvas you will see a mini file explorer to select or create a file to edit. We found that this is a faster work flow than the usual home page for typical software. With the usual Open, Cut, Copy, Delete, Rename, and Properties options. In the current build you will see the Qanvas Icon for files for now. In the future they will display the final image of your art.  Navigating to other folders work as you would expect. The path text on top can be used to back out of folders.

Blank Canvas
Blank Canvas

When a new file is opened, the user will see a blank canvas with one empty layer. The colors at the bottom allows the user to quickly add, move, delete and select colors. The menu at the right is to select between edit, select, or transform tools. When the user right clicks the tools for the selected tool mode appears.

For Qanvas, there will two different types of raster tools, spray tools and line tools. Spray tools will constantly emit color as the user applies the brush. Line tools will apply an entire stroke as a single emission, making it easy to blend with colors. Unfortunately, none of the line tools are ready in the early alpha build, as we are currently experimenting with line tools.

Spray Tool Properties

Spray tools be customized in the emission properties for the tool. There’s Speed, Distance, Difference, and Dissolve to change how the spray brush emits. By default the brush emits as you would expect, but if you tune down the speed. The brush would emit less often. Distance would emit the brush in different places from the brush. Difference will emit different sizes. Dissolve will dissolve the emissions.

The cursor is a preview of what happens when the tool is applied. This is useful for many of the tools, so that the result of application can be seen before the tool is applied. Eraser Preview:

All of the usual blend modes are present. Many of them aren’t present in the early alpha build.

We want Qanvas to be highly customizable. Currently the users can change the accent color and there’s also a dark mode. In the future, we will add many more options to allow for custom workflows and shortcuts.

This is just a small taste for what is to come to Qanvas. We want to add many features that allows for easier creation of images from scratch. We will only ship the highest of quality possible going forward. We’ve come so close to providing the world with the next big thing, and we need help. You have a chance to save Qanvas, so please support our efforts by funding our campaign so that we can complete Qanvas and usher in a new era of software design.

Risks and challenges

Software development is tricky, not only is it expensive (which is why we're working for free), but it is also unpredictable. Especially for a photo editor from scratch. We have already run into many unexpected challenges and we overcame them with the cost of time; which we are running out of. We want to make this our day jobs, so we can provide the world with the next big thing.
