It was a day like everyday in Q WORKSHOP office. We talked about some new dice designs, dealt with some customers requests, solved a pending shipping issue… And then our graphic designer called us all to his desk.
- I’ve been having bad dreams lately - he said with a shaky voice. - Some very bad dreams.
- About what? - said someone cheerfully. Oh, had we known what expected us!
- The horror... The horror. And tentacles, and many mouths full of teeth. I’m still shaking when I think about that. But it made me design this - murmured the artist. We just laughed. But then we abruptly stopped laughing when he showed us what was on the screen.
Since then, this image has been tormenting us, and we finally decided that we needed to release it to the world. We do hope that this will keep our Sanity in check, although you can never know…
Ladies and gentlemen, behold the CALL OF CTHULHU RPG METAL DICE!
This is a set of full metal dice, made of tin and painted in black. The numbers and ornaments are engraved in dice, thus ensuring their top quality. They are practically indestructible - and they come with the lifelong guarantee.
The dice set contains 1xD4, 1xD6, 1xD8, 1xD10, 1xD12, 1xD20 and 1xD100 (percentile).
The total weight of the set is 163.25 grams / 5.75 oz.
Here are the dice dimensions:
The dice are officially approved by Chaosium, Inc. to accompany you during your Call of Cthulhu Roleplaying Game sessions. Of course you can also use them as fancy dice during any other campaign, if it includes tentacled monsters and/or Gods from the Outer Space. Or you can just put them on the shelf and let them haunt your dreams. We won’t be checking that, although the Great Cthulhu might - this is always a possibility.
Each die is adorned with tentacles on the edges and fanged mouths in the corners!
And here's an opinion on the dice from Mike Mason from Chaosium:
And here's the review of the dice from Dan King at the Game Boy Geek:
We will make the dice in our own factory in Poland, EU. This gives us full control over the process and assures that there are no shipping delays.
Thanks to our long term cooperation with many US partners, we know how to pack our products well, and we've worked through basically anything that can happen with shipping.
You may wonder why we decided to make these dice through Kickstarter. Both Q-workshop and Chaosium are big companies, and they don't need to crowdfund their projects, right? Well, yes and no :)
The truth is, we loved our experience during the previous Pathfinder Metal Dice set campaign, and we consider that a unique opportunity to show you the new idea of a product, learn your opinion and create it with you - fellow gamers, dice lovers and Cthulhu geeks.
Pledging on Kickstarter is your chance to get many exclusive Call of Cthulhu items that won't be available anywhere else after the campaign.
The main set will be available to buy later, but at a much higher price and ONLY AFTER WE HAVE SHIPPED ALL THE REWARDS to our backers.
Also, those voices in our heads kept telling us that this would be a good idea. It isn't wise to refuse them...
Please have in mind that wherever a Stretch Goal is "added to all pledges", it DOES NOT INCLUDE the Junior Investigator pledge level.
The Sunken dice are available both as an extra add-on, and an upgrade to any metal set you pledged for during this campaign.
The design for the Nyarlathotep dice is inspired by an awesome artwork by Loic Muzy, its copyright belonging to Editions Sans Détour.
So, in the basic $69 pledge you get:
The large mat dimensions are B3, meaning 353 x 500mm (13.9 x 19.7in). The small mat dimensions are B4, meaning 250 x 353mm (9.84 x 13.9in).
More technical info on the add-ons can be found here.
The metal Innsmouth Gold coins are designed by Mark Helwig, and the Medallion of Ithaqua (from the campaign Horror on the Orient Express) is designed by Lynda Mills. Both are manufactured by Campaign Coins.
Cthulhu Mythos is a terrifying vision of our world in a cosmic perspective, first created (witnessed? seen? We’ll never know…) by an American horror fiction writer named H.P.Lovecraft (1890 - 1937). Although Lovecraft’s life was not very long nor happy (some basic info here), he did left us an outstanding legacy of (mostly) short stories, where unnatural beings threaten all human existence. The main one of those is the Great Cthulhu, who sleeps in the sunken city of R’lyeh until he wakes up and destroys the world. There are also many more unnatural beings, whose only goal in life seems to be to spread horror and death to innocent people. Yep, it’s that cheerful.
All together, it forms a universe called “Cthulhu Mythos”. Lovecraft was not one for detailed descriptions - he much preferred conveying the eldritch, ghastly atmosphere and the feeling of inminent threat that his poor Investigators feel so often. Therefore, from the moment his universe gained popularity, the popculture has spawned an immense quantity of images, versions, stories, books, games, retellings, and all things ambiented “Cthulhu”.
Chaosium, (kay-OSS-ee-yum) is known for publishing high quality books and games, and for having a well-developed sense of fun. In 1975 the company was founded as The Chaosium by Greg Stafford, visionary game designer and creator of the world of Glorantha and the Pendragon roleplaying game, among others. Most of Chaosium's product lines are based upon literary sources. H.P. Lovecraft's 1920's horror fiction provides the basis of Sandy Petersen's classic Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game line which has won so many awards that they have lost count, though they do know that there are more than 80 of them.
Mr. Lovecraft also provides the inspiration for many of the books in their Chaosium Fiction line. They also publish Basic Roleplaying, the core of their roleplaying game systems, and hundreds of game supplements, both in print and downloadable formats. In 2015, Chaosium celebrated their 40th anniversary. In 2016, Call of Cthulhu celebrated its 35th anniversary and the World of Glorantha its 50th!
Here’s a link to their store where, apart from buying the books, you can also get free character sheets, quick start rules or free adventures: http://www.chaosium.com/call-of-cthulhu-rpg/
Call of Cthulhu is the Registered Trademark of Chaosium Inc.

We’re shipping from our warehouse in Poland, EU. If, as with our last campaign, the majority of our backers are from US, we will arrange the shipping from a Fedex warehouse in Illinois, thus saving you the customs troubles.
Unlike in our previous campaign, here the shipping costs are not included in the pledge. We will ask you to pay them after the campaign, the moment when you close the Pledge Manager. The total amount will depend on how much your package weighs.
Here are the approximate costs for the "Investigator" pledge:
How far into the production we are? We’ve got the prototypes ready, and we’ve learned from last year not to start the campaign before finishing the prototyping work ;) Therefore, we’ve got all the production techniques covered, and the only thing that we need is to know that you like the product, so that we can create it for you.
Risks and challenges
This is our second Kickstarter campaign, so we know what we’re dealing with. The previous one is 100% fulfilled and our Kickstarter projects team is full of energy and ready for new challenges. We’ve got our own factory in Poland, EU, so the production is fully under our control and there are no China manufacturing hazards.
Delays may happen, of course, as with every project. We will inform you about them as they happen, as the communication with backers is our priority.
