If you like all things Nintendo, Video Games, the thrill of the hunt, and TV shows like Pawn Stars and American Pickers - then you will LOVE THIS FILM.
WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?
Jay Bartlett has been a gaming enthusiast for years; He’s owned all the name brand systems from Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft, and Sony as well as obscure platforms by Atari, Panasonic, and Phillips, but with over 30 years of gaming and game collecting, one goal has eluded him: owning every single retail NES game released.
The Nintendo Entertainment System stormed onto the market in 1985 with an initial release of several “black box” games and continued releases until 1994’s Wario Woods. In all, Nintendo released over 600 official games for retail – but that’s not the whole story. Several 3rd party titles, like Tengen’s Tetris and Supersprint were released and Nintendo even created non-retail games like “Nintendo World Championships” for special tournament events hosted by Nintendo – the rarity of this game in particular has earned it the nickname of “The Holy Grail.” All in all, the count of NES games out there tops 700.
Enter filmmaker Rob McCallum: Rob has known Jay since he was two years old and it was Jay who introduced Rob into the world of video games. Nowadays they both host weekly podcasts on gaming and movies with an ever-popular following. Like all good stories, this one starts with a bet or a dare: Can Jay collect every NES game from scratch in 30 days using his own money?
The rules are simple:
- 30 days to collect every NES game, WITH NO ONLINE PURCHASES ALLOWED!
- Jay has to use his own funds to acquire every game
- Jay has to at least acquire all the
official recognized games by Nintendo
- Rob gets to film everything! (YAY!)
To help Jay track and maintain his new collection will be
Mike Froussios, a longtime friend of both Jay and Rob who has an equal love of gaming, game history and gaming culture in general. Jay and Mike will beat the street of their local town then beyond and into the WILD as Rob rolls the camera and directs his crew to capture every
aspect of the hunt. With 30 days and limited cash in his wallet, Jay and Mike will have to
strategically find the best way to reach their target of 700+ games!
Along the way Jay will also talk to other collectors and fans alike and listen to their advice for his quest. He’ll delve into some of the history of the NES and specific titles, and get into some head to head game competition with Mike as their journey takes them across country. There will be plenty of fanboy discussion too as Jay, Mike and others determine the best Mario game, the best Nintendo franchise, if games are the same today as they were 20 years ago, and generally what made the NES the most memorable system and more.
The film ends with Jay visiting Nintendo HQ in America. Ideally, Nintendo, who will become aware of Jay’s quest from the onset, can provide some of their own insights into the longevity of their brand, why their earlier games are as popular as their recent releases and maybe they'll have a surprise in store for Jay too.
With vintage game collecting hitting a fever pitch recently, thanks in part to popular retro culture and reality TV shows featuring hunting for the "rarest finds," this film will offer its own unique take on the art of collecting, the psychology of hardcore collectors and will deeply explore the belief that collecting is about the journey, not the destination.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The games we play, how we play them, how we choose to play, how we acquire games and with whom we play games says an infinite amount about our society.
In an era where technology has made every thing a click away, we've lost a sense of adventure in our lives and a sense of respect for the hunt. It's important to rediscover the hunt, to actively seek out our goal in the world and engage with society instead of being hidden away behind a veil of technological communications. Additionally, new gamers don't know what its like to play games in a common space, to bump into someone, to take turns, to pass controllers around - we're no longer a real community of shared experiences; we've morphed into a simulated attempt at connection - and this connection has failed. Our society has become lazy and that multiplies everyday.
For Jay, it's important to see if the world he grew up in, the one where gamers played in the same space, traded games in person and talked with each other face to face, still exists, despite the effort it might take. For Rob, the director, it's important to examine if society now is reaching back to the past for nostalgia sake or if there's something more important and dyer behind this need.
This is a scary time in our world and as odd as it sounds, a documentary on gaming, game history and game hunting may provide answers that we all need.
WHAT'S WITH THE TITLE??
Anyone that loves Nintendo belongs to "The NES Club." Whether casual fan or fanatic collector we all have a special place in our heart for Nintendo and gaming in the 80s and 90s. This is our 8bit love letter for all the fans out there. Please help us make this film!!!
STYLE and STRUCTURE
“The NES Club” looks to make use of the stylistic staples of the gaming world by specifically using tropes familiar to its audience such as an original 8bit score, 8bit graphics for lower thirds and a dynamic opening and/or closing credit sequence that looks like genuine 8bit game play. The filmmakers will also structure the film into various levels or stages as well as include a “score counter” at the top of the screen to keep track of the number of games our hero has acquired at any given point as well as the amount of money he’s spent or has left. Overall, The NES Club is going to be a lively immersive stylistic experience, full of color, sound, and exciting dynamics.
HOW YOUR SUPPORT HELPS US
Every dollar counts when it comes to independent film-making. In a project like this, a substantial amount of the cost comes from travel and crew costs.
Travel: A lot of this film takes place on the road. Gas, lodgings, and food can add up quickly for a crew of 10 people over the course of, not only the 30 days for Jay's quest, but for any follow up shoots that require the crew to travel to specific experts.

If we raise more than 50k, we can polish the film to a greater degree which means time in post for editing, audio, music, VFX, graphics and more travel to meet with known personalities and include them in our unbelievable challenge.
Crew: No one should ever have to work for free and the crew we've assembled (which includes game developers, renowned VFX artists and acclaimed camera people) is worth more than we could ever pay them. Thankfully, they recognize that this isn't a studio film but they still have bills to pay and families to feed. These people will be working 12-15 hours a day on a regular basis. They deserve compensation.
The amount we're asking for will let us shoot a version of this film but to up the ante, we'll also seek outside funding sources, investors, and give more of our hours than any compensation could properly account for. THIS IS INDEPENDENT FILM-MAKING and WE LOVE IT!!!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risks and challenges that this project faces is the unpredictable nature of Jay's journey. The unknown people, places, weather, the dangers of going out on the road are all potential pitfalls. The cooperation or lack thereof by shop owners, passing public, and legal threats from existing game brands all pose a threat to the final vision we have for the film.
Thankfully because of our years of production expertise we've selected a project that sets us up for success: our intentions are to promote a brand, a love for games and to include everyone's opinion regardless of class, culture, creed; We believe that we'll be equipped to handle what comes our way.
Additionally, like any doc, the story we set out to tell might be different than the story we discover. Because our story might change unexpectedly (such as the case with the amazing doc "The King of Kong") we may require more time to properly film, compile and research the necessary story elements to deliver a complete film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
