Photo-main

The People, Places & Patterns Project is an educational project using photography and video to bring distant lands to life in the US.

About this project

Hello there! I'm Peter West Carey, the photographer who came up with this crazy idea. This photographic journey through Morocco, Tanzania and Nepal (with bits of Spain and Kenya thrown in) has been in my head for over a year now and I'm happy you're checking it out.

GOAL

Explore, video record and photograph various countries in Africa as well as the country of Nepal. Return home to USA and ignite curiosity about other cultures in those young and old through engaging presentations in schools, libraries and community groups.

How I'll Do It

Before I leave and upon my return I will be scheduling talks with various groups in my community, slowly expanding the circle. I will visit local schools, libraries and community groups in order to share my experience and excite people's imaginations. I love using travel as a tool to open people's minds to the possibilities of life beyond our normal borders. I have done slideshows in the past and the response is always favorable when travel photography is introduced.

Most importantly for me, I want this trip to enrich the lives of those around me. I want to bring a bit of Africa and Asia back home and help others enjoy the world around them. If you have a local group who would like a free slideshow presentation after the journey, please let me know! And if you're interested in being a corporate sponsor, email as well.

I will be blogging on The Carey Adventures.com, tweeting as pwcarey and posting on updates on Facebook while on the trip to help you follow along. Also, once this project is funded and this Kickstarter page closed, I'll continue to keep updates on a new site using the address http://pppproject.com (which currently points to this page. :) )

Let's get to the nuts and bolts. The journey will be completed in the Spring of 2010 with over two months on the road in these three countries. A bit of what is planned for each location:

Morocco

Morocco has a mystique about it and I've been drawn there for years now. The trip will begin with a flight to Spain from the States and a boat across to Tangier. I'll then head south to Fes and Meknes. Checking out ancient Roman ruins and modern Moroccan life in this section of the country is on the bill. I'll be taking day trips here and there. After a spell it's time for Marrakesh and the souks(markets) plus a camel ride or two. Snake charmers, belly dancers, spices and tanneries. It's hard to not jump on a plane right now!

During this leg of the trip I want to record the feel of street life. We'll be in a number of major cities (Tangier, Fes, Marrakesh, Casablanca) and I want to bring back every day life, inside the home and out. How do people make their money or what do they do to relax? How have they adapted to living in this region?

IMAGES I WILL BRING BACK
History, distances traveled, daily life, countryside, city life, every day life, work, markets, camels, mountains, coast, ethnic groups, religion, smiles, examples of adaptations for climate, food, spices, nightlife, tightly shot panoramas, crowds, modern life meeting old world traditions

If you have any suggestions on 'must see' places, people or patterns in Morocco, please feel free to send me an email.

Tanzania

In Tanzania the trip is all about safaris and rural life. Big game is on the list and I've charted a course through some of the most wonderful national parks on the planet. But this trip isn't all about animals and the scenery! I've been researching on the tribes in Tanzania and Kenya and plan to find a way to gain some intimate insight into daily life.

I plan to take a safari through the World Heritage National Parks of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, to name a few. Wild life will be a highlight of this section of the trip, but I also want to explore and bring back a bit of what life is like in towns so dependent of tourist dollars. I also have an invite to visit a local school and hope to make connections with that aspect of daily life for children back home.

IMAGES I WILL BRING BACK
Wildlife, school children, classic safari images, Kilimanjaro, big game, tourist towns, rural life, transportation, culture, smiles, impacts of economic recession, birds, sweeping panoramas, history, The Great Migration

Nepal

Nepal will be a month long trek and mountain climb. I have trekked in Nepal before and have some wonderful photos at Hidden Creek Photography already. But I want to go back and focus on the people that were so absent from my first set of photos. I got to know a number of Nepalis on that trip and look forward to continuing the friendships. The trip will include a climb of 20,290' Kyajo Ri and will be my first journey above 20'K.

I also want to peek into daily life, as with the other sites. How is food prepared and what do Nepalis do for fun? I know they are a people given to singing and dancing and I would love to bring back some quality video to share.

IMAGES I WILL BRING BACK
Smiles, food, food preparation, daily life, village life, subsistence farming, tourism impact, Sherpa life, classic trekking, more sweeping panoramas of the Himalayas, wildlife, parties and celebration, dancing, singing, commerce

And there you have it! Check out the awards on the right side if you're interested in helping me make this project a reality. If there is something you'd like that isn't on the menu, drop me an email and I'll be glad to help you find what you want.

THANK YOU!!
