PLEDGE NOW to help us start production, and get our EXCLUSIVE OFFER - For every pledger on Kickstarter who receives a Pure Device, the device will come with free access to our cloud services for the duration of its lifetime.
BetaKit "Pure Devices has the advantage of readily available, dependable cloud-based tech..."
Geekwire "...even though the Pure Device is marketed with seniors in mind, it sure looks appealing to the rest of us tired of too many buttons."
StartupPoint "Easy to use touch screen computer designed for the elderly..."
The Pure Device is a simplified touchscreen that only provides access to the Internet, messaging, audio/video communication, social networking, online radio and streamed movies and shows without the need to use a traditional computer.
The industry has been adding power and complexity to computers and programs for decades. A modern computer is packed with power and functionality and attempts to satisfy every user's needs. However, we continue to see a large number of people who are intimidated, annoyed and frustrated by all the unnecessary complexity which they will never use. Do you really need a computer designed for business intelligence, while all you want is to email your recipe or tweet about your favorite show?
Today home computers give users dangerous tools of system administrator without a good reason. In our case the integrity of the system is maintained and preserved in the cloud by actual administrators while the Pure Device leaves only useful and important things at your home.
With Pure Device users can feel safe. And we believe that giving that assurance encourages and welcomes people to play with these devices, explore online world and benefit from it without worrying anymore.
The Pure Device is a multiple-purpose device that streamlines the clutter and hassle of standard computer, only allowing the user access to information and data relevant to his or her exact needs. Preliminary features (internet, email, video, audio, social networking) come standard and preinstalled; further customization and personalization can be setup and maintained remotely. With all aspects of the Pure Device being supported from the cloud, device interaction becomes extremely streamed-lined and efficient. Mere seconds after the device is powered on, it is ready for use. The principal idea behind this approach is that less is more. Do a few tasks but do them exceptionally well and without fail.
For an older user or “late adopter," he or she will find our touch screen so natural and user-friendly to use that all reservation or fear to touch the device will be eliminated. Simple, intuitive, easy-to-read, and clear-to-hear options will meet the special needs of so many who have been overlooked by today's technologies.
We are a team of extremely geeky nerds and industry professionals that have had many years of experience working at large corporations such as Microsoft, Intel, and Amazon, who are constantly frustrated by inept, miserably complex technology which steps in the way of even the most rudimentary communication with our loved ones.
Being the very people who build this frustrating technology on a daily basis, we felt that we then are the ones most obligated to take action to fix these technological shortcomings. While we started exploring options on how to tackle these issues, another technological revolution was simultaneously capturing the hearts and minds of geeks and nerds all over the world. A small inexpensive computer built for the world called the Raspberry Pi caught our attention. While not a complete solution for all personal computing needs, when we coupled its use with cloud technology and innovative user interface design, Raspberry Pi got us right where we needed to be.
The resulting product enables people to use Internet services, video communication, stream online video and listen to the online radio without the hassle of learning how to use a full blown computer.
By controlling the entire experience from the device to online services to 24/7 support call centers we provide a solution that really works.
With our many years of combined experience and expertise in product design and manufacturing, the Pure Devices team has not only the capability but also the detailed plan and preliminary agreements with logistics companies and suppliers to deliver on every promise made here (except for the raspberry pies... we still need to find some excellent bakers).
The prototype that you see in the video is a real working device. In order to take it to the next level (aka out of our garage and off the work bench and into your house), we need your support.
As fun as an adventure it was to spend this past year hand-building this device and optimizing custom software, we now need to complete the following in order to get the Pure Device in your home:
What began initially only as a Seattle-based company, has slowly started to expand. As the scope of the project has gotten larger, we have started looking outside of our area for manufacturing companies who may be interested in a partnership. This search has led us down the West Coast to the heart of the technological world - Silicon Valley.
With the requested funding in place, we are going to be in the position to continue our journey and bring the current prototypes to the manufacturing line.
Our primary software development team is located in Seattle and will continue polishing the user experience, user interface, and back engine functionality. We will need to pull more engineering resources in to finalize hardware design and continue working with our manufacturing partners in Silicon Valley in order to bring the Pure Device to you and your loved ones.
At the heart of the design is simplicity and utilitarianism. So regardless of who you are, where you live, your age, economic status or technical proficiency, the Pure Device machine will be easy to operate.
Pure Device is a touchscreen appliance that enables rich online experience for communication, social networking, and entertainment
Right now we have 20 people working on this project.
We have been developing the device for a year.
We focus on usability for seniors as an important part of the family and often overlooked audience. Our device can be customized for needs of users of different ages and skill levels. We aim to simplify communication and sharing for all family members.
The 65+ population is growing, and today their specific needs are not addressed adequately. We also don't look at the "seniors market" in isolation - every family member can benefit when some - or all - of them start using Pure device.
Everything you expect to find online: communications, sharing, social networking, entertainment, internet access. The set of applications will grow with time. We are planning our own development and provide an SDK to third-party developers.
No, we don’t build a closed platform or product, it's a platform to access online services. However it's easier to share information with your close circle of relatives when you use Pure device.
Our goal is to incorporate and simplify what you use already, not to add to the mix of applications. We will connect to existing systems and will organize access in the most convenient and easy fashion.
Concierge service helps users of every skill level achieve their goal when using our device. This service is to not just resolve issues with the product but to help and educate.
The Pure Device simplifies the interaction with a computer even more than a tablet, and does it by selecting a narrow target on select audiences. We don't build another iPad or Android; we offer an alternative to the modern tablet concept.
This whole business started based on years of experience supporting elderly market and trying to get them online. We made and saw many attempts to use existing tablets and similar devices. The issues really start appearing the moment the customer can change anything on the device.
Indeed one can totally lock a generally available tablet device, but then what's the point of paying for all the power you will lock? Yet another consideration is the core principles of the user experience: modern tablets are built for a very broad audience; optimizing accessibility for elderly users requires additional effort. Then there is the form factor and the actual size of the screen, not always optimal for a senior user or a child.
However we can build the device inexpensively and have full control over every detail of it. This device is a smart terminal, everything else happens in the cloud under our control. We simplify the experience and add a very advanced customer service. The key is that we control every detail of the full circle customer experience, so users get results with no extra effort.
We plan the final units to have a 19-21 inch screen.
It is rather an appliance that gets you connected to online services.
In more technical terms, the device is a thin client, running a smart terminal for a computer which we manage in the cloud. This simplifies the device, makes the device and the whole online experience affordable and reliable. The client software on the device does minimal work, but it is critical for the optimal user experience in multimedia scenarios - often a weak side of desktop virtualization.
