About this project
PupilBox is the solution to our digital age. Our lives are inundated with digital devices such as computers, tablets, smartphones, and more. Many of us are unknowingly subjecting our eyes, and our children’s eyes, to high amounts of artificial Blue Light. This range of the light spectrum may lead to eye strain, headaches, neck pain, disrupted sleep, and even long-term damage to the retina. That's why PupilBox is excited to offer a visual lifestyle system that goes beyond just glasses and protects you from morning 'til night.
While Blue Light exists naturally in our environment, digital screens and light bulbs emit Blue Light during times of the day when we would not normally encounter it. As we become more and more digitally addicted we spend longer periods of time staring directly into our devices. The closer the proximity to a screen, the higher the concentration of Blue Light.
Most people are still unaware of Blue Light, especially the harmful impact it can have on their health. An American adult spends 10 hours a day staring at screens without protection. Even worse, we are forcing our children to learn via tablets and computers all day at school.
PupilBox couldn't wait for people to find out about Blue Light by visiting the eye doctor, just as it would not have made sense that people discover the effects of UV only if they visited the dermatologist.
PupilBox strives to be the leader in Blue Light education. We rigorously test both environments and products with our spectrometers to ensure you will have the right protection at the right time (see 'The Lab' section below).
PupilBox will continue to develop products that provide the best protection against Blue Light. Combining these solutions, allows for both young professionals and children to be protected from harmful Blue Light, morning 'til night.
When we stare at a screen for too long without the proper protection it makes our eyes hurt! Some symptoms that may sound all too familiar are: headaches, itchy or burning eyes, tired or sore eyes, watery eyes, difficulty focusing, double or blurred vision, dry eyes, and light sensitivity. In addition, focusing on pixels from a digital screen significantly reduces our blink rate. That's why PupilBox provides artificial tears for when you're experiencing dry eyes during prolonged screen time.
Whether it's in the car, at school, or sitting around the living room, children spend increasingly more hours in front of digital devices every year. All of this exposure to blue light may have very detrimental effects on our children’s eyes. While the digital age is still young and more research needs to be done, we need to take the precaution to protect the most vulnerable eyes.
Similar to how different people use different levels of SPF sunscreen, PupilBox is offering various lenses to provide an option for how different people consume Blue Light. Our proprietary lens technology filters more undesired Blue Light than any other glasses on the market.
Protect yourself and have fun doing it. The PupilBox Signature frames are our boldest statement; available in both blue and orange. This is our best priced Kickstarter Reward. Not ready to rock out the Signatures? Perhaps the Drakewood or Sunnie is more your style. Check out more frame options below.
When the sun goes down so does the amount of natural Blue Light, triggering our bodies to produce melatonin and start the sleep cycle. White LED and CFL light bulbs emit significant amounts of artificial Blue Light that trick our receptors into thinking it's still daytime. The PupilBulb provides sufficient bedroom light without harsh Blue Light, allowing your body to prepare for a restful night's sleep.
Our eyes have a natural spontaneous eye blink rate (SEBR). Staring at a digital device can reduce your SEBR from 15-16 blinks per minute to 5-6 blinks per minute. Prolonged screen time leads to tear evaporation. PupilBox provides a solution with artificial tears that allow your eyes to refresh the blink rate, restore the tear film, and be exceptionally comfortable.
Everyday the PupilBox Team wakes up thinking about how people consume Blue Light. Visual lifestyles differ from person to person. A student works all day on a tablet, holding the screen close to their eyes. A dental assistant is exposed to high levels of Blue Light from the curing light. An analyst programs formulas in Microsoft Excel with a white background, emitting substantial levels of Blue Light.
All devices and artificial light bulbs emit various Blue Light wavelength concentrations. PupilBox acquired spectroscopy technology to test those levels in all indoor environments. This same equipment is utilized to evaluate various products that can control how much Blue Light we consume. The lab's goal is to discover, test and provide a growing list Blue Light filtration products.
PupilBox, a Cincinnati-based startup, is an online destination delivering education and personalized Blue Light protection for young professionals and their children.
We have assembled the highest quality, most effective products in the marketplace today and built a box that contains everything essential for the health and safety of your eyes. PupilBox is designed to be a purposeful, holistic solution to better visual health for all visual lifestyles.
Risks and challenges
Any new venture brings with it the inherent risk and challenge of the unknown. While PupilBox aims to provide the highest protection on the market, our current production methods are not economical for our company or for our customers. This is we need to develop our own, new lens lines that will not only protect specific ranges of light, but also allow us to deliver our products more efficiently and more economically.
We aim to develop these lenses and an efficient means of production. It is possible that this will take significantly more time than we anticipate and that our lenses may appear slightly different than in our current photos and video.
We believe our timeline is realistic and achievable. Admittedly, our delivery dates outlined in the campaign may change depending on the timeline of developing and producing the glasses. We will keep all of our backers fully updated on our progress throughout the process!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
