About this project
- Who are the people who live and breathe the cultures and politics of immigrant communities across the country?
- Who are the people changing their neighborhoods and America? What are their stories?
- And who are the writers and reporters from these communities who know these stories and can tell them well?
Join us in launching PRI's Global Nation Reporting Fund, a dedicated fund for reporters and essayists who are embedded in immigrant communities around the country.
Global Nation Reporting Fund
Since its inception, Public Radio International (PRI) has been dedicated to identifying and featuring new voices. These voices provide perspectives that helps us better understand our nation, our world, and our lives. In 2013, PRI launched Global Nation to tell the stories of a changing America and its people through the personal stories of real world immigrants. We’ve built a community around these stories through our Global Nation Exchange Facebook group, and our on-air and on-line reporting has reached millions. Now, we want to do more.
This fund will be a catalyst to bring more stories from more voices into Global Nation, the award-winning coverage area from PRI and public radio’s only daily global radio show PRI’s The World. Global Nation dives deep into stories and discussion of immigration and diversity in America. Global Nation stands out for its real-world stories about the immigrant experience from reporters who know and live in the communities they cover.
Our goal: 50 stories from new voices from the Fund.
- When we raise $16,000, that will support the production of 50 stories (about one per week) from the Global Nation Reporting Fund in one year.
- If we raise $32,000 we’ll feature two stories per week.
- If we raise more than that, we can continue funding reporters into the following year.

What kinds of stories do we want to tell?
We want reporting about pop culture, daily life, and major news. We’re looking for stories from around the country. And we want counternarratives that challenge conventional thinking about immigration reform and immigrant communities. We’ll also feature personal essays; the stories best told by the people whose life experiences help us understand our country better.
We want the Global Nation Reporters Fund to be a model for bringing new and fresh voices into the media, especially into public media. This will be an open and participatory endeavor. We’ll make the story-pitching process easy, drawing heavily from our existing and rich discussion group, the Global Nation Exchange on Facebook. We’ll follow the Global Nation community’s lead as our coverage evolves.
We want people to read more articles, essays, and reports from people like Sonny Lê, Evan Taparata, Ada Tseng and Miguel Morales. Their stories get to the heart of an increasingly diverse America, and showcase perspectives and issues that need more attention in public media.
The stories produced by the Global Nation Reporters Fund will reach a wide audience: PRI.org nets 1.5 million visitors per month.

Risks and challenges
When you work with new people in an endeavor, journalism included, there is always uncertainty. Our intent is to work with people in whom we see potential and talent. The biggest risks and challenges are 1) it takes us longer to work with new contributors than we expected and we get fewer stories on PRI.org than we set out to do; 2) that the stories don't resonate and attract the large audiences we hope they will.
