About

"War & PTSD" Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: a Documentary

PTSDDocumentary.com

We have already invested well over $50,000 into this important documentary project. We humbly ask you for help in assembling the remaining funds to fulfill editorial requirements and for the acquisition of some final interviews throughout the United States.

Our team consists of experienced documentary and news professionals,  primarily former members of the U.S. military, with people representing each branch of the Armed Forces. Luckily, some of us do not suffer from the affliction of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), though some do, including our oldest writer and medical expert, who served on the ground, during the United States' success in Europe, which ended WW II.

Our strength is in our hands on experience; as professional Television producers with decades under our belts, and as fellow military veterans, fortunate to have a deep and personal understanding of the impact of PTSD.

Fortunately, most of the footage for this program is already recorded. The final acquisition and post production are a short hop to getting this documentary ON THE AIR.  We are almost finished!

————————————————————————————————

We are seeking funds for the completion of the program. We still need to gather interviews for the documentary, and then go straight to post production. We are ready!

The need for this is great all over America and throughout the world.  Our program will offer education to prevent suicide, to help people find the tools to live with the problems, and to survive and cope with this affliction.

We need your help!

Join us in making an 2013 an unforgettable year for PTSD support and education. Your money will fund:

  • Video and audio production expenses including full-time shooters & producers
  • Post-production expenses including editing, graphics, music and audio mixing

Our team has been to Afghanistan and Iraq, both when the wars were still going strong and recorded interviews with Soldiers and Marines in the combat theater about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

These revealing interviews demystify the problem and chase away the stigma associated with PTSD, because these are people actively engaged in war and suffering with PTSD.

We highlight the strategies active-duty combat troops on the ground utilize to deal with the issues of PTSD, while they are still experiencing the war.

————————————————————————————————

We have already gotten over 100 hours of raw video for this project. The video includes military members serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, on the ground, during the US military efforts. We also have a couple of dozen videos from state-side veterans suffering from PTSD, as well as valuable insight from top professionals in the medical field.

We have already interviewed experts, including a medical doctor who served in WWII before becoming a doctor specializing in the treatment of Veterans with PTSD, a world-famous psychoanalyst, and other relevant parties.

————————————————————————————————

The tragedy of Veteran suicides is an urgent motivating factor to get this in front of viewers quickly.

The rate of Veteran suicides who were deployed in foreign wars overseas far outweighs the suicide rate of average Americans and has continued to worsen. We need to finish this program and put it on television, so that millions can see it and learn to find balance and the skills necessary to sustain themselves in a healthy manner.  Our military service provides an excellent background and special expertise for this project.

————————————————————————————————

The interviews we have already acquired include people ranging in age from 25 to 90 years old who served during WWII, the Vietnam War, and Korean conflict, as well as more recent members who served during the Cold War and the Middle East wars from 1991 through the present.

We have taken this project nearly to conclusion but have depleted our funds to finish it. Our hope is this topic will resonate with enough people who have been touched by PTSD and/or understand the long-spanning impact of such an affliction on our society, that we are able to obtain the small amount of funds needed to complete it.

A key segment of this documentary involves the family of a Marine in California who was killed in Iraq. They address something known as 'Survivor's Guilt.' Their message to PTSD sufferers is that this family of a fallen Marine wants those who are suffering from PTSD to learn how to cope and to survive, and they stress that their son would say the same thing.

————————————————————————————————

Our goal is simple: produce a modern documentary with interviews and perspectives of veterans, doctors, and counselors on the front-line of treatment regimes.

Please help support our project!

————————————————————————————————

There is strong interest from Oregon Public Broadcasting in this documentary, proposed to be an hour-long program.

When it is complete, the program will be quickly viewed by a large audience. The program will also be made available through other venues.

War and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: a Documentary

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – ‘PTSD’ – has become a household expression in America due to the extraordinary number of cases following WWII, the Far East asian wars in Vietnam and Korea of the last generation, and two long grueling wars in the Middle east. The term was coined in the time following the Vietnam War when the nation was equally overwhelmed with returning warriors. Both experts and sufferers have a number of varying ideas of what helps, and what doesn’t help. This disorder has dark overtones and grim potential outcomes, including suicide, prison and homicide.

Our knowledge translated into television programming, will save lives.

There is hardly a family in America today that does not have a member who suffers the effects of PTSD, from some physical or psychological impact and from one cause or another. PTSD is not an effect of only military service, but from a multitude of life-threatening causes.

Many people contract this disorder through other difficult roles, like working in police, fire and medical fields, or from severe abuse and even from accidents. Others suffer PTSD because they have been victimized, physically or sexually. Among those are the spouses and children of Vets, but the list goes so far beyond.

Society is puzzled by this unique injury, and PTSD is an injury, make no mistake. It may not show physically, but it is a wound that has to be managed.

Because there are often no physical scars, it is sometimes difficult for people to learn to identify and manage relationships with people who are afflicted. Relationships will forever be affected, both social and business-relationships, but those in the immediate family require special attention, because those relationships will ultimately be the gauge that determines if the sufferer has a semblance of a normal life, or if they end up homeless or institutionalized or incarcerated.

Making progress in this area will bring relief to Americans and lest we forget, Americans are still only one aspect and the world is full of PTSD sufferers. We would like to see our work translated into other languages over time to help people the world over.

What Happens Next:

In addition to the documentary, if we are wildly successful in this campaign and our sincere hopes, we believe a 13-week TV series on PTSD is extremely viable. This series would more comprehensively address the civilian side of the issue. The testimonies are riveting, our approach is fair and thoughtful, and we know the need is immense to discuss and bring the issues and how people cope with the serious affliction into the mainstream.

There are answers, and ultimately the best way to convey the education is through a series of programs that will run on television and the Internet.

Starting with the documentary, we will explore PTSD and its impacts on our society and provide the myriad answers that people are looking for, inside and outside of the Veterans Administration.

We look forward to inquiries from parties interested in backing the ventures.

Risks and challenges

The funds we have requested will be sufficient to fulfill the final development phase of this project. We need an additional $100,000 to develop the multi-episodic TV series mentioned above, but this is not a requirement for this specific Kickstarter campaign, and will only be viable if the financing is made available through your generous over-funding of this campaign!

We are seeking funds for the completion of the program. We still need to gather interviews for the documentary and then we will use the remainder of the funds to produce the TV program. The need for this is great all over America and beyond. It will offer a level of education that will prevent suicide and help people find the tools to live.

It is unlikely that anything will limit our ability to proceed, but if any unanticipated problems arise, we will address them accordingly and figure out how to succeed.

Perhaps the largest challenge we have faced is convincing Veterans with PTSD, and their families, to open up to reveal their inner struggles and analyze their position regarding PTSD.
