*The minimum order is funded, but your pledge still helps! The number of books to be printed depends on the amount raised in this campaign.*
Hi! I'm Peter, and I'm the artist behind a series of minimalist map designs called Barely Maps. The goal of this Kickstarter is to fund the printing for a hardcover Barely Maps book.
The book—which is complete and ready to send to the printer—compiles 100 minimalist maps, and also tells the story of my year-long bike trip, the map designs themselves, and more.
As an incentive to pledge, you can pre-order a signed copy of the book (with free U.S. shipping), get some art prints from the Barely Maps store (at a special price), and have your name listed on barelymaps.com as a Kickstarter backer.
In 2014, I took a one-year, 11,000-mile, solo bicycle trip around the country.
It was an incredible experience—beyond what I'd expected. I met so many great people, and biked through so many beautiful places. After the trip ended, in an effort to share my stories, I started designing and selling minimalist maps.
The store ("Barely Maps") was a fun side hobby as I adjusted back to normal life.
Then, unexpectedly, one of my designs took off. Within a week of posting it, "Intersections of Seattle" started getting shared, retweeted, and written about, including a front page story in The Seattle Times:
It was a complete surprise. But, it was the boost I needed to take the map store full-time.
Luckily, as I put more time and energy into the map store, while designing dozens of new maps, people were enthusiastic about the artwork.
Now, I have 100 map designs, and I've compiled them into a book.
This is a collection of 100 map designs. It's also a story about the bike trip, the map designs, and all of the other stuff—before and after.
The book is fully complete: edited, proofed, checked, double-checked, and bibliographied. I can't wait to send it out into the world.
I'm self-publishing through an offset printing company called PrintNinja, and now that the goal has been reached, the book is ready to go to print. When you make a pledge, you'll reserve a book from the initial printing.
As an incentive, I'm offering free shipping to all U.S.-based backers, as well as a Kickstarter-only deal for art prints from my store (check them out here). Plus, anyone who gets a book through Kickstarter will have your name (if you choose) listed on barelymaps.com as a Kickstarter backer.
*Your choice! Unframed, sized 11"x14" or 12"x12" (normally $30-$32 each)
The book is 8.5"x11" and hardcover/casebound, 208 pages
See the print options (and reviews) on Etsy.
All prints are guaranteed for shipment by November 1.
All books are guaranteed for shipment, with an estimated ship date by December 10. I will send updates to all customers as they are printed, bound, and shipped to me. Books will be shipped to backers in the order of pledges.
*All backers (if you choose) will also have your name listed on barelymaps.com, on a page called "Kickstarter Backers."
Risks and challenges
The risks on this project are minimal. The book is complete and has been professionally edited, I have the supplies to fulfill all print orders, and I have already printed and shipped over 3,000 prints from my Etsy store. As for the book, I'm self-publishing through PrintNinja, a company that has printed more than 8 million books, games, and magazines to date.
The estimated times for the production process, customs, and bulk shipment of books may vary with unexpected delays, in the range of a few weeks. I've discussed these possibilities with PrintNinja, and while we don't expect any hiccups, I will keep all backers fully up-to-date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
