Innovating with materials from Mali and Burkina Faso, our team in Ghana is ready to produce our first clothing collection.

We need help to produce an innovative and luxurious summer 2014 clothing line in Ghana made from West African materials. Our team is largely made up of talented West African artists who intuitively understand local context and know how to deliver. We have been planning and prototyping designs and processes in Ghana for over a year now and have everything we need to put our Ouagamako collection into production--except for full funding. This is why we need your help!

Exciting Recent Press Features:

Materials Sourcing from Landlocked West African Countries

The Ouagamako Summer 2014 Collection blends amazing cotton textiles from Africa's largest cotton producers, Mali and Burkina Faso. This includes a beautiful sheer cotton fabric made in Burkina Faso and a heavier traditional hand-woven cotton from Mali (known as mud cloth or bogolan). The collection name is a portmanteau of Ouagadougou and Bamako, the capitals of Burkina Faso and Mali, respectively.

This is what the raw mud cloth looks like off the truck from Mali:

We make a point to source amazing materials from landlocked countries in West Africa. First of all because there are a lot of interesting materials in these places that don't often make it out.  But also, this strengthens supply networks and supports local industry in places more removed from global markets. This idea could touch a lot of people; the artisanal textile and traditional clothing sector is the second largest employer in West Africa, after agriculture.

For those interested in economic development, this makes the textile and clothing sector a very important sector for value-added work. Value-added work creates end products that utilize local materials and a lot of talent to produce a product with more value than the raw material itself. Our mud cloth from Mali is an example. Much of the products of agriculture, like the cashews that Burkina Faso exports or the cocoa that Ghana exports, are not value-added materials and their producers must largely face the whim of global commodity markets on pay-day. A lot of countries developed by creating value-added industry--prime example being China over the last 50 years with its manufacturing for export.  With our Kickstarter funds we will get closer to our vision of sustainably bolstering trade supply chains and value-added work in West Africa. Each funder contributes to this work! We can't do it alone!

Our project is big!  And to pull to pull it off we have built a talented and well-organized team on the ground in Accra. Together we form a company with proven capacity to source difficult to find materials from interesting places and turn those materials into beautiful and durable clothing and accessories.

For the Ouagamako Collection, we have already created and tested all the clothing and accessory patterns. The below photo, for example, showcases our ladies reverse high-collar midriff tee. You can see our entire handmade prototype patterns and jewelry collection in our onllne lookbook

Our project will transform these white prototype patterns to beautiful finished products. In the below photos, you can see how the woven and sheer cloths from Mali and Burkina Faso come together in some private order pieces (in colors different from the Ouagamako collection colors).

Talk about sustainable, ethical, innovative, eco-friendly fashion! We are so excited to get to work and we have some great rewards for those who help fund our project, some of which include pieces from the Ouagamako collection, far below retail! We've designed our Ouagamako collection in a way cognizant of the manufacturing constraints on the ground in Accra.  Our method makes manufacture and sizing easier, with drawstring and elastic bands on some items. This simplifies the sizing process: just S, M and L. The collection is available in the following four colors: Cake (purple), Sea (blue), Uni (yellow) and Peppe (red).

To pair with the clothes we developed a jewelry collection, which embodies our roots--the pattern comes from our inspiration print. Original pieces of this rare print are also showcased in our street cycle cap (below). The jewelry range retails starting at $60 for the small earrings to over $300 for the largest handmade necklaces. Our cap retails in Europe for $60. All of these items are available as rewards to our funders far below these retail prices!

More About Us

You can learn more about how we started in Ghana in 2012 at our website and on our facebook page.

Prud?  What's with that name? - That's a bit of a longer story, which you can read about here. In short, our original inspiration came from a repeating print of squares we found in an Accra market. We did our first photo shoot with that print. We incorporated the square into our logo and sought to play off the idea of being a "square" because we feel we are anything but. Our business aims to break boundaries. We also think the insider/outsider dichotomies of modern style cultures are funny. And we find ourselves at the epicenter of a mixed identity space that we think will only continue to grow as cultures globalize, intersect and meld. Calling ourselves Prud is a tongue-in-cheek reference to all this.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Trying to undertake this project in Africa comes with a unique set of challenges that we have come to know well in the several years we've been doing business on the continent.

Basic Infrastructural Hurdles - We've been operating in the face of power outages over the last few years, and unless some anomalous outage occurred, we don't foresee this as a major issue. Additionally, most of our manufacturing processes can be done without electricity! Overcoming logistics hurdles just takes some "elbow grease" and hands-on management. We are based on the ground so will be on call to address any transport issues. Luckily or team members have been dealing with these issues for years.

Materials Supply - We aren't sure how many people will be interested in our products and this will be our first large scale production test. The materials we have identified to use in this line, like traditional hand woven cotton fabric from Mali, is plentiful. We are going to work hard to get the shipments quickly from Mali and Burkina Faso.

Color Matching - Our hand dying process is an art. Color variations may occur.

Shipping - Some of our products are shipping from Ghana. We'll do our best to get items from Ghana to you on the promised deadline.

In all cases we will keep our production process transparent and send progress updates to all funders well ahead of fulfillment deadlines.
