There is no risk to the dog of electrical shock. The Disco Dog vest is low-voltage (3.7V), the battery has multiple protection circuits in place, and all of the electronics are isolated from the dog by an insulating layer of vinyl. We also tested our prototype thoroughly before putting it anywhere near our beloved dog.
Based on our current prototype, we do not recommend you use the vest in heavy rain or snow. While it will stay safe for your dog at all times (there is an insulating layer isolating all electronics from the dog) the vest may be permanently damaged if water gets into the micro-controller.
As we move forward with the project, we'll absolutely investigate ways to make it more water-resistant so you can use it in all conditions.
At the moment we have no set schedule for mass production, but finding manufacturing solutions is a big part of why we launched our Kickstarter. We hope to answer these questions before the Kickstarter is over, so we can let people know when more Disco Dog vests will be available.
A higher density LED grid would be great. As we develop the project, we hope to increase the number of LEDs on the vest. This has implications for both battery life and production cost so we'll work out the best balance.
