About this project

Hello all! My name is Rose, and I'm an author in Austin, TX.

THE SMALLTALK

I was raised in the East Texas piney woods around a lot of suspect berries and vines, educated at Southwestern University with a focus in Classics and English Composition, and lately I spend my time trying to keep up with an adolescent Border Collie while I write my latest fantasy series. So far the writing has been the more successful venture.

THE SHOPTALK

Since East Texas still holds as much magic for me now as it did when my imagination was younger and wilder, I've chosen the same setting for my debut fantasy novel, "The Storyteller and the Silent God." (Read the first two chapters here!) I'm here on KS to ask your help in getting the digital and printed release out into the larger world.

What do I write? I focus on high and historical/alt-historical fantasy with particular interest in world-building, continuity, and complex character development. I fact-check and research my work 'til it bleeds historical accuracy and burgeons with mythological intent, and this story is no exception.

Steeped in Mesoamerican culture and myth, this story deviates from fantasy genre conventions to show the classic journey of the chosen hero from a new angle in a fresh, largely unexplored setting.

Scroll down to the synopsis, give the first two chapters a read, and if it sounds adequately fresh to you, please consider pledging or just help me get the word out to readers everywhere. :)

THE SYNOPSIS

Nell Arnor has withdrawn to her father's East Texas cabin to write her next novel, but her progress is slowed when her family becomes embroiled in a high profile property rights suit. Armed with a handgun and aided by her wolfhound Editor, she deals with shifty activists, thinly-veiled corporate threats and lately, lucid nightmares of a strange world that wake her in a cold sweat.

Haunted by her daily stresses and unable to focus on her novel, Nell begins to write the scenes her dreams show her: a restless volcano towers over an exotic, advanced civilization where magic and technology blend until the lines between them blur beyond distinction. A young woman is violently murdered as a heretic by the dominant religious cult, and her sister petitions the Silent God--the long-exiled god of Destruction--for the power to avenge her family.

Nell obsesses over the project day and night, each morning finding it harder and harder to wake. When Nell is caught in a highly suspect accident on the property, she finds that she cannot wake at all, and is caught in the tumultuous world of her dreams.

She resolves to wait it out, assuming she is in a coma after the accident, but is captured and condemned by the inhabitants of the world as an evil omen. Nell is horrified to find that in this plane she bears the mark of the exiled Destroyer and as events spiral out of control, she is forced to face the possibility that she is not in a dream or even a mental realm of her own creation, and that she may bear a burden capable of pitching the entire world into a new dark age if she cannot learn to control it in time.

As old gods wake and destruction looms, Nell must ask herself: is she a god, a prophet, or just a puppet? And is she even the hero of this story?

Risks and challenges

Self-publishing is an inherently risky business, but my goal is to produce a professional, high-quality end result. I've allotted a reasonable margin of funds to deal with any complications in production and fulfillment, and have carefully planned the remaining elements and budget points for editing, cover art development, and ebook formatting costs.

The cover art design is by Anna Dittmann, a fabulously talented artist with an absolutely stunning collection of work and graphic design. Her professional record speaks for itself, and I have no concerns in continuing to work with her. The cover art has already been delivered (see main project image) and if funding is met I will commission the lettering and graphic design with her as well. Check her art out here: http://annadittmann.com/.

The physical rewards (printed books, buttons, postcards, and posters) are usually the wild card in projects like this, but I will be working with the manufacturers early on in the process to be certain that my high standards can be met and the timeline and budget can be kept.

The printing and shipping of the hard/paperbacks will be handled by Ingram Spark and Createspace, both highly reputable production companies used by Kickstarters and businesses alike.

If the stretch goal to include a custom plushie (modeled after one of the story's creatures resembling an axolotl salamander) is met, the production will be handled by Gann Memorials. (Stretch goal: $6,000)

Of course, delays may happen, in which case I'll be sending updates as needed to keep everyone in the loop. :)
