What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

You have an idea for an awesome writing project in 2017 that you really want to write.

That’s amazing! But ideas, passion and enthusiasm alone won’t get it written. At some point, you need to find the time and get to work.

However, that’s where it gets really hard, and mostly - it’s where people fail.

But it’s where we can help.

Prolifiko is a digital productivity coach that we’ve designed to help you start and stick at your writing projects – right to the end.

Our research-backed system has helped hundreds of people complete all kinds of creative, educational and professional writing projects.

Now, we need your help to turn our prototype product into an app – so we can help more writers finish what they start and achieve their writing goals.

What you could help us achieve with Prolifiko
What you could help us achieve with Prolifiko

Meet one of our first users

Say hi to Wyl. He lives by the sea in Cornwall, England and since he was a boy has always wanted to write a novel.

But with a hectic job and a young family, well… he struggled to find the time. Two years ago, Wyl stumbled across an early stage version of Prolifiko (we were called Write Track then) and used our digital productivity system for over a year to write his first ever novel, The Many.

Not only did Wyl get a publishing deal for his novel The Many was long-listed for the 2016 ManBooker Prize – the most prestigious prize for fiction in the world.

He’s using our system to write his second novel. He’s probably writing it as you read this (keep going Wyl!).

Inspired by his story? Then imagine what you could achieve.

Help us to help more writers like Wyl - please support our Kickstarter.

Read how Wyl used an early version of Prolifiko in The Memo.

How Prolifiko works

It could be that blog you should be updating more often, it might be an article or essay you just have to get written, or possibly a story you’ve always had a passion to tell.

Whatever kind of project you have this year, Prolifiko will give you the structure and support to finally get it written.

We’ve been researching and developing our system for three years  – testing it on writers, gathering feedback, tweaking it some more.

Now, we know we have a recipe that works – one that really helps people start and stick at their writing goals.

Our system is rooted in proven theories of behaviour change and the science of habits and we use a small steps methodology to help you get off the starting blocks and get writing.

We have the best team EVER

Okay, well I suppose we would say that because because Prolifiko is us.

We're Bec and Chris. Yep that's us and that's our big red sofa and super-friendly labradoodle Peggy - and we love building digital products to help writers write (Peggy's not very useful in that department if we're honest).

Bec, Chris (and Peggy)
Bec, Chris (and Peggy)

Bec's head of innovation for a global publishers and has spent years managing digital products. She’s also a former director of a leading UK writing school – where the idea for Prolifiko first came from (more on that a bit later).

Chris works on the marketing side having spent over 15 years working for big digital and communications agencies and major brands. He’s also an award-winning scriptwriter and loves writing comedy.

We’re supported by some amazing people including ace developer Mike who codes and makes sure our UX is all spic and span, tech wizard-ess Sally who helps us make all the right technology choices, and Julia – novelist, director of creative writing at London’s Birkbeck University.

Last but most importantly, a vital part of our team are our writers. The people across the world who have fed back on our ideas, tested out our prototypes and given us their thoughts and ideas on how to improve.

A heartfelt thanks, you’ve been amazing ☺ All this is for you.

Our story

The story of Prolifiko starts with Bec running a famous UK writing school nestled in the stunning Yorkshire countryside. There, she met and worked with hundreds and hundreds of writers of all different types and levels of experience.

She saw how nearly everyone struggled to keep up a writing routine outside the confines of a personal coaching environment – with many people’s projects failing as a result. What a waste!, she thought. Let’s do something about that!

Now, at the same time Bec and Chris were both using fitness coaching apps like Fitbit and RunKeeper. These were effective and super-motivational. So we asked ourselves – why can’t we build something similar for writers?

So that’s exactly what we set out to do – use scalable, persuasive technology to start people writing, help them develop and improve.

So we read a lot of books…

… did a lot of research and spoke to hundreds of writers about what helped them write and what stopped them writing. And we partnered with a university to get academic input to design and build.

Our system uses a small steps methodology to help you approach your large goal one step at a time.

We have a taster live now and available online for free – try it out, we’d love to have you aboard.

We believe this

Prolifiko isn’t just another daft name for an app - it means something.

We believe that great ideas, thoughts and stories only become truly great when they get out of your head, written down – and shared.

Prolifiko is all about helping you write – and keep going – because your ideas can change the world.

We also believe that the key to improving as a writer – if that’s what you want to do – is to keep doing it. Being prolific, producing more – because that is how you improve.

Our product is all about helping you get off the starting blocks, grow in confidence, enjoy your writing and becoming unashamedly and apologetically productive – because it’s only when you keep going as a writer and keep producing that you learn and improve.

What our lovely writing community says:

Ahh, aren't they nice... No wait, there's more:
Ahh, aren't they nice... No wait, there's more:

What we've done so far

  • Initial tracking product
Our first product (Write Track) was a writing productivity tool that we used to test our early ideas. The website included goal setting, tracking plus a social networking functionality to enable people to share their achievements and learn from each other.
  • Kickstart your writing in 5 days
Next, we developed a 5-day writing challenge – a week-long digital writing programme with a gamified element to keep people writing. The product has been dramatically simplified since our early version and encourages people to approach their project in a set of small steps using email to support and notify users.
  • Continue your writing
We're now developing the next element of Prolifiko which will be sold at the end of the 5-day writing challenge. This uses the same process as the 5-day challenge – together with support, inspiration and learning to help you continue long-term with a writing project.

We have built the back end system, tested the prototype, designed the UX and have front end design in place. We’ve got a team of freelance designers, developers and UX specialists who can help us pull the whole thing together into an app.

All we need is your support to make it happen.

Where the money will go

We’ve got all the elements in place, we just need the money to make it happen.

Your support will pay for developers and designers to make the app, and the back end services to host and support it. It will take us less than two months to build and test, and if we meet our stretch target (more on this later) we can add additional tools to support writers everywhere. So here are the costs for the £15,000 goal:

  • Developers: to turn the current back end into an app, add front end design and mobile-friendly notifications: £11,500
  • Designers: will turn our graphic design into a user-friendly experience for mobile phones and tablets: £2,000
  • Server and back end services: we use Heroku to host, SendGrid email system, and WordPress: £1,500

We will project manage the developers ourselves, as well as test and run quality checks. There is no cost to our supporters for this work.

Stretch target: Help us add inspirational audio content

We love to push ourselves so we’ve got a stretch target that trebles our goal to £45,000.

If you help us meet our stretch target, we’ll make Prolifiko not just the place where you go to finish what you start in 2017 – but also where you learn practical writing skills from great audio content.

We’ll start by adding an audio writing prompts course that would build on a prototype course we’ve already developed with Julia Bell – the UK’s leading authority on creative writing.

The additional £30,000 will pay for audio recording, editing and hosting, development to integrate into the app, and design to create an amazing audio experience for our users.

Thanks for reading this far! If you support us we promise to make Prolifiko an amazing resource for you - and writers like you. Thanks so much.

Risks and challenges

We have been developing and iterating over the last three years so we’re pretty sure we have a good handle on the trajectory of our product development. Say that, challenges can always happen so we’ve listed out what we see as our top 4 – and how we’d overcome them. Feel free to ask us about any concerns you might have – we’d be delighted to answer.

#1: Cost overrunning
We’ve been through our figures very carefully. If we get fully-funded and £15k ends up not being enough, we’ll cover the remainder ourselves.

#2: Delays.
Building a digital product is tough and there are always unexpected things that happen – and lead to delay. All we can say here is that we’ve done this before – both for our own projects and for major brands and we’ll do our level best to make sure your product is delivered on time.

#3 Team changes
We work with freelance developers to keep costs low and to ensure we have flexibility – we’ve always done this and it’s never been an issue. That being said, people change, they can fall ill, fall down large holes or just get lost somewhere in a forest. We have contingency plans in place to ensure that should this happen, we’ll still deliver your product on time.

#4 Glitches
What we’re doing is new - really new. And when you do iterative development, gremlins and glitches can get into the system and spoil everyone’s fun. However, we’re used to squishing gremlins and we’ll promise we’ll do everything possible to ensure that when you use our product it will be gremlin free.

Erm, that’s it.
