Hi, my name is Ethan King, cardist and designer of Proj. Subtle playing cards.
Welcome to Project Shuffle and our first release, ‘Subtle,’ a completely custom deck of playing cards created from scratch for cardists. The design has been in development for over a year to ensure that every aspect of it is refined and unique. As the creator of Project Shuffle, I value versatility, and unique, modern design. I have represented these values in these playing cards, which are designed to look visually appealing in a range of cardistry moves, from fans, to cuts, to pirouettes and more.

I first introduced the concept of using an isometric pattern throughout the design of playing cards in 2015 with ‘Metric’ playing cards here on Kickstarter. The project was unsuccessful, but allowed me to further push the idea to create something truly distinct and different from other cards on the market.
In this design, I decided to focus on consistency and balance. This is evident throughout the design including the exclusive use of line, the redesigned position of symbols on the face cards and even the efforts to maintain a similar amount of negative (white) space on the face cards. This is also apparent with the removal of black and red face cards, every card is uniformly coloured with grey and a contrasting pink/blue gradient.
The back design features isometric forms that interact and intertwine to create a complex, yet understated design.
Selected shapes contain a gradient colour that has been chosen specifically to produce unique patterns when spinning, add visual elements in fans and create more motion in cuts.
A secondary pink and blue border allows thin borders to be maintained while the edges of packets remain distinct. This ensures that fans are clear and your cuts are easy to follow.
One of the stand out features of the deck's design is the unique face cards which have been created from scratch. This includes the design of:
- Index Font
- Suit Symbols
- Symbol Placement/Orientation
- Court Cards
- New, Innovative Elements designed to enhance the look of cardistry.
How the face cards will improve the look of your cardistry:
Larger index corners allow more detail to be visible in fans.
- The coloured line below the index form a unique pattern in fans, making them more visually appealing.
- A small colour palette in the form of a line is present at the top and bottom of the cards, which also add another line of detail in fans and spreads such as a riffle and flower fans.
- The placement of symbols have also been experimented with so that the design of the cards are more symmetrical and to provide less unbalanced negative space.
All of these elements also work together to create an ‘implied border’ which makes each packet more distinct in cuts when viewed from the face side. The extensive amount of elements also emphasise movement in cuts.
The court cards contain the same use of line present throughout the design to allow the courts fit seamlessly into the rest of the deck. Six unique court cards have been created, and every card has different placement of coloured line.
The aces are minimal and clean, I have added two small isometric cubes that make the aces unique and ensure that they still fit in the remaining cards with similar amounts of negative space.
The tuck box features isometric pattern wrapping around the entire box, around all the sides and even from the back over the top to the front. These patterns seamlessly continue on from a slightly modified depiction of the back design. The look of the back design is featured throughout, with the inclusion of the same coloured shapes positioned of the front of the box.
After extensive experimentation, I have decided to go with a lightly coloured design, since I believe that there are not many cards like these on the market and it can make way for the design to be applied effectively for cardistry. For these reasons, a grey stroke colour was selected, then a blue and pink gradient was chosen to contrast this.
Through this campaign, the cards themselves and uncut sheets will be sold.
To purchase an uncut sheet, please use an add-on.
*For purchases for more than 12 decks, please contact me through my email, firstname.lastname@example.org or message me here through Kickstarter :)*
To purchase any of these add-ons, please add the amount listed to your pledge.
IMPORTANT: To use add-ons, a pledge that includes shipping must be selected before the add-on value is added to the pledge. As well as this, if you incorporate add-ons to your pledge, please be sure to fill in exactly what add-ons you'd like in a backer survey that will be sent out upon the completion of the campaign.
Every backer who orders a deck or more will receive tutorials for each of the moves shown in the video below. These tutorials will be made while the cards are in production :)
Since this project is being run from Australia, pricing is in AUD. An estimate for your local currency is provided by Kickstarter in each reward tier, however if the exchange rate changes, you will still be charged the full price in AUD at the end of the campaign period. (If, of course, the project is successful)
Proj. Subtle Playing Cards will be printed in Belgium by Cartamundi on their signature True Linen B9 Finish. I have received prototypes through Cartamundi that feature this finish and they are holding up very well, even under constant use. If you are unfamiliar with them, Cartamundi is a world leader in playing card and games manufacturing and are especially known for their printing precision and card handling.
USA and International:
I have elected Gambler’s Warehouse to ship out orders to backers due to their experience, having fulfilled 100+ playing card Kickstarter projects in the past, and their competitive rates that will ensure shipping is cheaper for you. I have personally ordered cards that use their fulfillment service in the past and am satisfied with their shipping processes.
As an Aussie cardist, I know how annoying expensive shipping rates are for playing cards, so I will be shipping out all Australian orders using AusPost. This means that Australians will get reduced postage rates!
Note: Only USA and Australian orders are tracked, orders to other countries will only be tracked if specified in the reward tiers description. If your order isn't tracked and you would like it to be, please contact me at email@example.com and I will find a new shipping rate for you.
I have some stretch goals ready to be implemented that will improve the cards and the order. Below is the first one revealed, more will be announced based on the success of the project and the number of cards sold!

Risks and challenges
If you are not completely familiar with fixed-funding on Kickstarter, once you pledge, you are not immediately charged, but will be automatically at the end of the campaign’s funding period IF the funding goal is reached. If I don't reach the goal in time, the cards will not be made, and you will not be charged!
If the campaign is successful, I will send out a backer survey so that you can input your shipping address and any other necessary information. Please keep an eye out on your emails for this!
There are some risks associated with playing card manufacturing, however I trust the experts at Cartamundi completely to tackle any issues relating to manufacturing that may arise and to deliver the cards to myself and Gamblers Warehouse in the expected time frame. I also trust that the fulfillment company chosen (Gamblers Warehouse) will dispatch orders in a timely manner.
Other than this, the design is complete and ready to go, so once the project is funded and I receive the money from Kickstarter, all that I’ll have to do is send Cartamundi the artwork files and the money required to produce the cards.
I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read through my project and hope that you will consider supporting me in this effort :)
