About

Project Nepomuk is a cross border Arts and Music project. Where words fail, Arts and Music can bring people together.

This summer there will be a BOHEMIAN SUMMER FESTIVAL, with the performance of a new opera NEPOMUK, by Barry Webb, joined by young singers and musicians from the North West at Old Christ Church Waterloo Liverpool L22 1RE, a now disused sailors` church.

There will be an art exhibition by Liverpool contemporary artists .

The  Arts Council of England have been generous to finance this new event, Project Nepomuk, with a modest grant, so your support will not be wasted. It is happening.

The project started last year in the Czech Republic. Artists from Liverpool visited The Monastery in June 2017 and worked on artist projects with local Czech people. This was the first stage of the cross border cultural co-operation. In November 2017 a British collaboration took place at the Frantiskovy Lazne Literary Festival and in Nepomuk, both in the Czech Republic. In January 2018 I was invited to sing and talk about the project in front of a live audience of 400 at the Alpha Theatre Plzen, which was broadcast on Czech Radio.

Nepomuk is a town in the Czech Republic, famous for John of Nepomuk.

The main event in June 2018 will be a performance of a short opera in concert, the new opera  Nepomuk, composed and conducted by the British composer Barry Webb. Some of the best young professional international singers and musicians based in the North West and have been selected by audition.

The opera deals with the conflict of love and power, truth and lies, through the story of the Bohemian King Wenceslaus and the martyrdom of John of Nepomuk. It is about false truths. A theme for today.

The BOHEMIAN SUMMER FESTIVAL will be put on at the lovely Old Christ Church Waterloo Liverpool L22 1RE. http://www.oldchristchurch.moonfruit.com/ This will be a new and continued use of the building as a community resource in one of the most deprived areas of the UK.

Associated local schools workshops have taken place, led by local artists and musicians involved with the project.

There will be an art exhibition at Old Christ Church, with a chance to buy art created by Liverpool contemporary artists at the intervals of the concerts on the 29th and 30th, and during the day of the 30th.

Ticket details.

29th June. 19:30 pm At the interval and following the concert. Entrance by concert ticket above.

30th June 14:00pm to 18:00pm. Free entrance. 19:00 pm Also at the interval and following the concert. Entrance by concert ticket above.

The Arts Council of England Grant will pay towards the fees of artists, orchestra, solo singers, ensemble, volunteer expenses, hire of rehearsal and performance spaces, auditions, publicity, posters and flyers, school workshops in Liverpool, cross-border cultural cooperation initiatives, Czech art workshops, a Czech travel bursary, an associated art exhibition at the Bohemian Summer Festival, 2 chamber concerts in the Czech Republic last November, a chamber concert launch party in Liverpool in March. A concert of a new opera in Liverpool in June, administration, website updates and media administration, music editing printing and production, box office costs, stewards to manage the venue, the bar and program selling, program production, video recording, fundraising initiatives, invites to guests VIPs industry connections and critics. The present budget allows us to cover this.

Plus tickets sales and other money raised by our own efforts. For instance, as part of the Bohemian Summer Festival, there will be a BOOK AND ART FAIR on 1ST JULY 2018. 10:00am to 18:00 pm. at Old Christ Church Waterloo in Liverpool L22 1RE (Promoted by www.bohemianaffairs.com not the Arts Council). A proportion of any profits will go towards Project Nepomuk.  Entrance Tickets £2 on door and On-line www.wegottickets.com/bohemianaffairs (plus 10% booking fee)

However we are looking for extra funds through crowdfunding here to ensure the future of Project Nepomuk. The money we hope to raise from Crowdfunding will go towards recording/video costs.

There are 12 orchestral musicians involved, and 5 solo and 5 ensemble singers, plus conductor, and other people to run the show. To hire one more musician/singer for the rehearsals and shows costs around £300, and so we are asking for about 3 times that amount. The money will be spent on the recording and video.

Risks and challenges

There are no risks.
The project is on budget, and is happening.
However, this appeal is to raise money for the video and recording of the project.

The crowd funding campaign runs to a week after (7th July) the finish of the opera and festival on 1st July, but this will take into account advertising of the campaign in out festival program, enabling people to contribute towards editing and production costs.

The Arts Council of England has covered the basic costs, and the events are going ahead. There are no risks that the events will not be delivered.

Only we want to make them even more special and use the recording and video for raising our profile for the future.

We are realistic, in that a fully staged opera production of the show is not being completed, as this would involve a huge budget, with expensive rehearsal time, sets, costumes, lights etc. to be paid for.

But we hope that this will one day be done, after the music is heard, and maybe taken on by a state subsidised opera company or in the place Nepomuk, where it was named after, and this is the first step towards that. We have held meetings in Nepomuk about this possibility.

That will be another crowd fund, and so please join us on this journey.
