About this project
Project DOG // www.projectdog.net
Hi! I'm Kira Stackhouse, dog photographer from San Francisco. About a year ago, I came up with the idea to make a new kind of awesome dog book - user generated and inclusive of ALL dogs! I wanted to create a project/movement that would paint dogs in a positive light, and create a platform to promote responsible dog ownership via creativity, art and community.
// WHAT IS IT?
The goal is simple - to find and photograph the AKC's 170+ dog breeds - both a purebred dog from a breeder and rescued dog of each breed (2 dogs/breed), living in the San Francisco Bay Area, for inclusion in a full-color coffee table book.
I believe that ALL DOGS ARE A WORK OF ART, and every dog has a unique story to tell.
// THE BOOK
Project DOG: SF Bay Area is a 350+ page coffee table book that features more than 170 of the American Kennel Club's dog breeds, both a purebred and rescue dog of each breed, living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Each photo is accompanied by touching stories of love, devotion and friendship, written by each dog's owner. (the AKC is not affiliated with this project).
**If you have a dog and would like your dog featured on the Project DOG website, you can submit him/her HERE. I'm also still missing a few very rare breed dogs... to see a complete list of missing breeds, click HERE.
All of the photos included in this book were photographed on-location at many iconic San Francisco Bay Area places (see examples below):
SAMPLE SPREAD - THE AKITAS (click here to view larger)
**Dog from a breeder is on the left side of the page, dog from rescue organization/rehomed/found is on the right side of the page. In many cases, the "rescue" dog is purebred.
SAMPLE SPREAD - WELSH TERRIER (click here to view larger)
*for some breeds, only 1 dog was found in the Bay Area... for these breeds, the photo will be a full spread.

// WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR
The money raised by this Kickstarter program is strictly to help fund the first print run of Project DOG: San Francisco Bay Area Edition. ...It is not cheap to print high-quality books! This book is all ready to go, all we need is some moolah to help make this dream a reality!
Project DOG is not just a book, it's a movement. A movement to create a positive, open space for dog people, dog lovers and everyone new to the "dog world." I am committed to communicating and raising awareness about issues that face dogs, always in a creative, respectful, and thoughtful way... Because responsible dog ownership starts before you get a dog!
// GIVING BACK
Project DOG is a proud partner of The San Francisco SPCA. We are donating a portion of book sales to support the San Francisco SPCA's mission to save and protect animals, to provide care and treatment, to advocate for their welfare and to enhance the human-animal bond.
San Francisco SPCA's Co-President, Jennifer Scarlett, has written the book's Foreword.
// WHY PROJECT DOG IS DIFFERENT
Project DOG is not just any dog photography book.
- This book is the first of its kind - user generated content!
- Features both a purebred dog (from breeder) alongside a rescued/rehomed dog of the same breed, unifying all dogs.
- Shares dog's personal story, written by owner.
- Includes all kinds of dogs, including puppies, adults, senior, and disabled dogs, award-winning show dogs, therapy dogs and more!
In addition to being a 350-page full color book filled with award-winning photography and captivating stories about dogs written by each dog's owner, Project DOG is about celebrating dogs - real dogs living in the world - our friends, our neighbors, our family.

In July 2010, I launched as an online social media campaign via Facebook and Twitter with an online search and doggie casting call. All of the dogs included in this book were submitted by their owners on the Project DOG website (http://www.projectdog.net) and each dog featured in the book was hand-picked based on the photo and story submitted.
There were more than 800 submissions received in the San Francisco Bay Area alone (more than 3,000 nationwide), and in some cases there were so many submissions for the same breed, that an online vote via Facebook was held to determine which dog would be featured in the book.
For many of the rare breeds, I contacted the AKC's national breed club officers, many of which were extremely helpful and supportive!
I left my full time job on June 3rd, and since June 4th I have photographed more than 200 dogs. I am still photographing as many dogs as humanely possible before my print deadline for the sake of the richness and quality of my book. I will do whatever it takes to make this dream a reality.
I have received alot of feedback about using these two words together. For the sake of this project, please understand that these terms are used loosely.
The dog on the left side of the page was purchased as a pet or for show from a breeder, hence a "purebred" dog. The dog on the right side of the page has been adopted via a rescue organization, shelter, or by other means. In many cases, the "rescue" dog depicted is also purebred.
One of the goals of this book is to help dispel the myth that all "rescued" dogs are mixed breed/mutts. 20-30% of all dogs that enter shelters and rescues are purebred, mainly due to owner surrender. I believe it is necessary for people to gain a new perspective on what it means to be "rescued", and it is also important to raise awareness about breed-specific rescue. There is a rescue organization for almost every dog breed; this is a new fact for many people.
All photo sessions held to complete this book were 100% complimentary in nature; absolutely no fees were charged for inclusion. The dogs featured in this book were selected based upon merit and quality of content received in original submission form. More than 800 people in the SF Bay Area submitted their dogs via the website and Facebook for consideration.
I have photographed more than 200 dogs in various iconic San Francisco locations since June 4th (6-11 dogs/day) and will continue to do so until we go to print!
We are closer to the print deadline than planned, and can only afford to fundraise for 25 days versus 30, in order to meet a holiday drop date. We'd love to have these books in for holiday, wouldn't you love to give this book to your favorite doggie loving friend or family member?
If we don't reach our goal in 20 days, then we don't get any money, and it will be interesting to see when/how this book will see the light of day. :-( Please, if you support Project DOG, consider donating and help turn this dream into a reality!!
