Sail the world on next to nothing. The path of minimalism, with a dash of wind, will set you free!
The Minimalist Sailor, a free man's guide to the world.
A narrative film that will outline the path to minimalist international cruising.
My name is Alex Dorsey.
In 2003 I left the east coast of the United States to circumnavigate on a 28’ sailboat (Namaste). Namaste brought me to 11 countries and half way around the world. After a single-handed crossing of the Pacific Ocean I realized a path of life-long minimalism & travel. During this time I produced two feature length cruising films, previews are available at www.projectbluesphere.com
I sold Namaste in Brisbane, Australia, to buy a larger boat (Splendid) so I could hold more stores and become even more self-sufficient. Splendid is a 40’ Cheoy Lee midshipman ketch, which was built in Hong Kong in 1973. I bought her for fifteen thousand dollars and have spent the better part of the last 4 years restoring her. Today I make beer & wine, bread, cheese, pasta, tofu, yoghurt, soymilk, and grow sprouts onboard. I predominantly get my protein from spear & line fishing. I live on about $8,000 a year and travel the world full time. I must tell you I want for very little and have a very rewarding life. Most of my expenses are related to maintaining my website, films & photographs.
I wish to produce my next film on HD and share what I’ve learned with others who seek a similar path. The Minimalist Sailor will be a comprehensive film focusing on the minimal and simplest path to unplugging from the system and traveling the world on little financial means. This lifestyle is not reserved for the financially wealthy; it’s reserved for those who are wealthy in spirit and heart.
I will cover sailboats and what to look for. Sailboats fully capable of circumnavigating and providing a home for life can be purchased for as little as a few thousand dollars. I will address what one should look for, how to refit, and the equipment needed. I will also address the art of minimalism in a sailing environment and ways to make money while traveling. I will show you how to make wine, bread, pasta, tofu, and other good things onboard for very little money. I will also cover spear fishing techniques as well as good travel and sailing etiquette.
Splendid and I are currently anchored in Panama. I will produce The Minimalist Sailor here in the San Blas Islands off the coast of Caribbean Panama. The San Blas are inhabited by the Kuna Indians, and is the most beautiful place I have found in all my travels. The San Blas provide the perfect backdrop for a film about freedom. The Kuna Indians are an indigenous tribe, and inhabit the 361 San Blas Islands off the coast of Caribbean Panama to the Colombian boarder. They live in palm huts and are predominately sheltered from modern society (electricity, phones, television).
I will be filming HD on a Cannon T3i and underwater sequences (spear fishing & anchoring techniques) using a GoPro HD. I have just purchased the T3i with the accessories I want, however I still need to buy a small generator (Honda EU2000) to power my editing computer, some hard drives for storage and a 50mm lens. I also need a little money to share with the Kuna Indians in exchange for locations and content.
If you would like to know more about me you can read nearly 10 years of blogs at www.projectbluesphere.com
You can also check out my photo gallery to see pictures of my travels and the Kuna Indians. There are also many free videos to watch.
Living the lifestyle I lead is incredibly rewarding. I travel full time, see the world, and make many friends. I feel as if I’ve found a magical doorway to freedom outside of the system and wish to share it. However my ability to purchase the necessary technology is limited and I need a little help. If you’re interested in helping me share my message of freedom and minimalism please check out the rewards section.
Peace from Panama.
