About the Film

Project 2x1 is a short documentary film shot on Google Glass, exploring the distinct cultures of the Hasidic and West Indian communities of Crown Heights—a 2 mile long x 1 mile wide neighborhood of Brooklyn. The story tests the limits of Google Glass, the world’s newest and most intimate filmmaking device, by developing a truly collaborative narrative told through the eyes of as many community members as possible, capturing each community's rituals and routines, their similarities and unique differences.

Project 2x1 was launched with both a local and universal mission. In Crown Heights, we aim to facilitate more inter-community dialogue and grassroots, community development. Our broader mission is to spark a universal movement combating the "neighborhood anonymity epidemic" and encourage more people to tell the stories of their own neighborhoods.

Background

Crown Heights' thriving Caribbean and Hasidic communities are its two largest ethnic groups and make the neighborhood one of the most culturally rich in New York City. Yet despite the proximity of these long-standing communities, a sense of intolerance is still palpable even twenty-two years after the Crown Heights riots. Today, these two communities are completely under-represented and often misrepresented in the media and to each other.

What's up with the name "2x1"?

Project 2x1 is a double entendre: It represents the geographic size of Crown Heights which is two miles long and one mile wide. But it’s also the mission statement of our film: A story that helps to transform Crown Heights into a place where two distinct communities form one united neighborhood.

Making a difference in the community and beyond

Project 2x1 is more than just a short film. It’s about starting a new conversation and shifting perceptions in a community with historically entrenched intolerance. It's about turning strangers into neighbors.

By partnering with local non-profits and arts venues, we hope to see this project come to life with community screenings and grassroots, community development initiatives. For the 23rd anniversary of the Crown Heights race riots, we aim to produce a new community mural (the only pre-existing one was destroyed two years ago) and help grow Crown Heights’ fledgling community gardens.

Beyond Crown Heights, we hope this project encourages more people to tell the unique stories of their neighborhoods.

Who we are

We are four twenty-somethings that love to geek out about technology and the beauty of Brooklyn life, and have passionate conversations about race, religion, culture, and identity.  Each of us brings a unique point of view and filmmaking experience to the table.

We're extremely grateful to our broader network of support in and outside of Crown Heights including Medgar Evers CollegeSesame Flyers, Chevra Ahavas Yisroel, and the Nasmo Collective.

Risks and challenges

If our project is successfully funded, we are tasked with filming, editing, and promoting our project before the wide release of Google Glass. Anything could happen. Hard drives might fall off roofs. But we’re confident we can pull this project off: we just need to pay the costs of website development and design, audio equipment, media storage, lighting equipment, camera gear, film screenings costs, and transportation in order to do it right. Thanks for your help.
