The End is Nigh!

Hi everyone!

The past three weeks have been rather crazy here. We’ve been compiling updates, rounding up video footage, creating artwork all the while working on the game. It’s just as crazy as last time, if maybe a little more structured.

We’ve talked to press, we’ve talked to backers, we’ve tried to get the word out as much as we could.

Sadly, it is clear that the project won’t be financed here. We could go into elaborate detail about why we think it didn’t work out, but frankly, there is no point. For now, what we want to do is take the best from this campaign and move on, which is why we decided to end the campaign on a high note, tonight, together with our community.

As was said in our videos and live-shows, one of the best things about the Kickstarter is the way it connects us with the community and this is the number one thing we are taking away from the campaign. We have a bunch of people who have joined our dialogue with the community, a bunch of people who trusted us and we want to keep you all in the loop and in the know about BFG and its projects.

Today we will have the gaming-session with a live-broadcast from the studio. We decided that this would be a perfect timing for ending the campaign, together with you.

If someone had planned to wait until the final day on Friday to pledge 450k we appreciate your intention to do so, but if there is a time to do so, it is today. ;)

The Immediate Future

We will keep the Backer-only forum section open and we will start posting things there regarding Ravensdale and its future. As we said, the game will likely not see the light of day if we do not meet our Kickstarter goal, these will mostly be updates regarding what we plan to do with Ravensdale now as we look into alternate ways to keep the project going. As a reminder, if you still want access to the Development forums, be sure to send a mail requesting access with your Kickstarter username to: backers@bfgames.biz.

Our most immediate goal is to find an alternate way to fund Ravensdale. This includes possible publishing deals even if we take the risk to lose the IP. We believe in Ravensdale and we got lots of positive feedback from you and the press. It might not have been the right project and time for Kickstarter, but the campaign raised attention.

A Special Message from Adrian

We love you and we would like to thank you for joining us and staying with us even in stormy weather . All you Backers that stayed with us until the end will get a code for Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams ‘Rise of the Owlverlord’ as a special thank you!
You are awesome.

Also here and now I want to say thank you to the BFG Kickstarter team with a special and very big thanks to Emily who was in charge of the campaign and did an amazing job. Though we weren’t successful, this was such a great campaign with cool updates, press-releases, live-shows, celebrities, interviews, videos, gaming-sessions and more. Seeing the pledges staying low made this job even harder but the whole team fought until the end. You are a great team and it was an honor fighting with you through this Kickstarter.

Finally I would like to thank the whole BFG team that worked hard on preparing all the material just for the Kickstarter. The crazy banners, the gameplay-video, the dev-diaries and so much more. There is so much passion and hard work you put into this, you rock!

Final words

First, let us point you to the guys of Precursor Games currently running a campaign here on Kickstarter for Shadow of the Eternals, who are struggling as well, but deserve to be funded. Head on over and check them out! That game deserves to be made!

To wrap this up, we would like to say thank you again to those who trusted us, with Giana as well as with Ravensdale. You’ll hear from us again, in the forums, on our social feeds and more. There will be one end update later tonight, just before we will end the campaign.

It’s been an amazing journey so far, due in no small amounts to our backers and community.

We will be sure to stay in touch!

All the best,

THE BFG TEAM

I am sad but I respect your decision. I went and looked at Shadow of Eternals but unfortunately I cant back it. No Linux support will mean no funding from me. The reason I was so passionate with you all was due to you making the game for Linux. Thank you for all of your efforts.

I still think you guys should give the campaign another shot, before trying to sell it to a big production company or something. I know I'd back again. My only suggestion to the team, is limit the number of advanced scouts. Being able to back for $15 is great, but with 1000 backers, you really limit your baseline for investing. Drop the pledge levels to to 200 max for anything, and you force people to spend an extra $10 ;)

Was a great campaign and game.

It's a shame. This was well prepared with great updates and events. I hope you guys find another way of funding the project. Anyway...well done and keep the faith!

      Hi out there,

Cancelling just some hours before the final end has nothing to do with giving up. We fought with all our heart long beyond the point where it was clear, that we won't succeed. It has nothing to do with a cheap way of hiding the failed campaign as there is no campaign on KS that has been canceled for another reason as failure. It has something to do with pride. Do you know the movie Harold and Maude? Maude wanted to decide herself when to leave. But I accept other views. Though we are not hiding. We are live right now. And there is no reason. The team did an amazing job.

I hope that we find a way to proceed with Ravensdale some day and maybe we will come back to Kickstarter with this great and special community.

Best Regards and Thank You All

      Adrian

I really do not understand why this didn't take off... the only reason I can see is, that it is summer time and many people with a job and money are actually on vacation.

I do not know if it is possible, but restarting on Kickstarter in Fall is definetly gonna be more successful I guess...

    8. TheChosenOne on

Cancelling seems such a cheap way to pretend it didn't fail on its own.

    9. Black Forest Games 3-time creator on

We really appreciate the support, the decision to cancel instead of let the campaign run it's course was an executive decision so we could end the campaign after our fun night of gaming with the community. At this point, it makes no difference besides what we want it to say next to our project, either cancelled, or failed. But we really appreciate your concern. A lot. So thank you. :)

Francis, it's really great that you want to contribute in other ways, there is no paypal donate option but we do have a shop on our main site (http://black-forest-games.com/) where you can contribute and in exchange, get some cool BFG stuff. :)

One more vote against cancelling. Stand fast until the very end, as you promised a few days back!

    11. Francis Tourigny on

To me, it's the campaign that did not meet his goal but should have. But I still believe in the project, and I'll proudly bear the Ravensdale logo as my avatar on KS and on Steam as a sign of my ongoing support. I'm not fond of Paypal, and I don't want to talk for the other backers because we all have different stances about it, but if you want to take paypal donations through your site, then I'll gladly make an exeception for you.

Ok, these days backers are too worried when they see concept art that is far away from completion, due to many big concepts but slow execution on Kickstarter, that held up everybody's funds with massive delays... Use traditional funding sources to get this game to 20%, then relaunch on Kickstarter.

    13. TheChosenOne on

To bad Shadow of the Eternals has those exclusive ingame backer only rewards.
      /
I think they havent changed their stance on it yet so I think I´ll avoid backing them.
(I may be wrong but will check this before the end)

Expect a post-mortem like we did with the Giana campaign, it's important for us to share our experiences and also it helps the team in the future. Also if you can't make it tonight, you will be able to watch the stream tomorrow on youtube and can access it at any time on our twitch channel. :)

Damn shame, seems like there are less willing to give on kickstarters these days, the huge record funding amounts are seen far less. Still not sure how we fell so short, I backed this straight away and I'm normally late to backing things.

Well let's hope this project can later rise out of that toxic goop that makes the world go round.

    16. Black Forest Games 3-time creator on

Just to clarify. Of course we will talk about this Kickstarter and what we learned from it/took away from it. We are just not talking about it in this update. This seems to have been misunderstood. ;)

      All the best,

Sorry to hear it not kick off. We enjoyed Giana Sisters a lot when we got around to trying it out. Hope that Ravensdale will still see the light of day. Be sure to keep ChaosHour in the loop! We would be happy to do any featured articles or reviews for you.

The moment I saw this project, I backed it. But the fact that you don't want to talk about why you didn't succeed is beyond me! It's scary. You are still not taking notes? You need to take some criticism it seems. So why did you fail? Numbers of reasons and I'll point some. You failed at convincing me that you needed that much money. You're keep saying that's the money needed for an awesome game, but that's not helping. Most probably you didn't convince yourself in the first place. And what about convincing the others? The first signs of you being ridiculous was when I saw your reaction to Xbox One after the E3. I was like "What?". Then, after the campaign starts, you said "And we want to find out if there are enough crazy people out there that believe in this vision." First, you obviously failed at deliver that great vision that will convince many people to pledge, and second, you're telling your backers crazy. Way to go! You said you believe in your dream and you were too convinced you'll succeed. Well I say you were too high in the sky and unfortunately, I think you still are not standing still on the ground if you know what I mean. I know making games is expensive, especially if you live in Germany, but it seems like you're no longer an indie developer. Good luck in your future projects!

I'm sad ;/ I missed your awesome Giana Sisters KS and had to buy it later. When I saw this campaign I thought to myself that as a result of Giana Sisters (which is awesome!) you would easily reach your goal due to your build up reputation. I backed this project right away and was happy that I was able to be a part of it this time. As time passed by I realized that it would be hard to reach the goal. Still you never gave up and always stayed positive _and_ provided us with updates. You are a great bunch of people and I really hope and wish that you can continue what you want to do. I'll keep a lookout for projects/games from you. If you ever make another KS I'll be there with you again.
I'm not sure if I can make it tonight but I wish you an awesome event! You rock!

    20. Black Forest Games 3-time creator on

Thank you for the great response. I would like to take a moment to address a common concern: We are ending the campaign tonight because we want to end on a high note and be in control as it were. Due to preparations for Gamescom and other internal concerns, we cannot postpone the event of tonight to tomorrow.

We believe at this point, the difference between cancelled and failed is minimal and we want the last hours with our backers and community to be a fun-filled time, fragging each other. ;)

      All the best,
      BFG Niko

Also, don't cancel. Let the time run out instead. If you cancel, the project will forever have (cancelled) attached to the name on our history pages. If you let the time run out, it will look normal.

    22. Jalister on

Count me as someone that isn't into this type of game, but backed this one because it looked so good.

Also, please check out Balrum. They need help, and there close to making it.

For the development forum, is it a special section on the Giana sisters forum ? I'm interested in hearing about the development of the project in the future.

I am quite amazed that Ravensdale didn't catch on. I am not even an action gamer and the coop and visuals appealed to me so I readied my virtual wallet.

What did go wrong? Was everybody on vacation?

Thank you and I'm really sorry it's not funding as it looks like a lot of fun.

Sadly I haven't had time to get into the backers forum as I've been busy with guests for the last two weeks.

Best wishes to all the team :)

    27. Laurent Caruso on

There is still some hope, tho it's gonna be difficult but still not impossible ;)

It would really be a shame if Ravensdale doesn't ever see the light of day, the footage that you have shown so far is so promising with great gameplay mecanics, visual and art style!!!

The best thing we will all remember at the end is the amazing attitude you guys have had since the beginning of the campaign! Great communication with your community, constant updates, positive attitude, free Giana Sisters stuff. You guys truly deserve to win this battle :)

See you anyway this evening for some severe fragging!

I don't think it's a good idea to close the campaign early. It does look bleak but you never know. Typically most backers get on a campaign I'm the last few days I think you should hold out until then

      That's quite generous! Thank you!

I'm disappointed that the funding did work here. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.
