About

Hello. Professor Buzzkill destroys history myths and misconceptions, explains how they started and spread, and also show how complex and compelling history can be if you really study it. You Kickstarter folks were so generous earlier this year when you funded phase one of Professor Buzzkill.

Now we’re back on Kickstarter to take the Professor Buzzkill project to the next level and we’re asking for your help. Here’s where we want to go:

First, and most importantly, we want to create genuine and committed community engagement -- we’ve been stuck in the Buzzkill Bunker too long. We’re going to bring history to the people: debates, guest speakers, presentations, quiz nights and parties!

Buzzkill Events will take place in towns across the country and perhaps internationally. We’ve got research trips to take, and conferences to go to, and we will add Buzzkill Events to those trips, especially New York, Chicago, Washington DC, and London. We’re going to partner with local history groups and other societies (such as Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). This will generate buzz, help people engage with real history, and have fun doing it!

As you can imagine, this is gonna cost a lot of money, but you can see from the Kickstarter budget posted at professorbuzzkill.com that it’s all feasible because of the partnerships we’ve already made and because we can piggy back off our already scheduled research trips.

Second, we need more funding to keep the podcast going. Although we were able to finance Professor Buzzkill for twice as long as we originally planned with our first Kickstarter campaign, we now need to pay for marketing and promotion to get more listeners. More listeners means we will attract serious advertisers, which means the show can become self-financing and we won’t need to beg for donations anymore.

And if we go over our Kickstarter goal, we’ll be able to provide an improved Buzzkill Bookshelf and the Quote or No Quote part of the podcast. That would make us the bestest history show in the podcasting universe.

We’ve buzzkilled myths on J. Edgar Hoover being a cross-dresser, Mussolini making the trains running on time, on Guy Fawkes and V for Vendetta, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and many more.

If you haven’t visited the site in a while, or if you’re new to Buzzkill Nation, make sure to go to professorbuzzkill.com or click on the link on this Kickstarter page.

As usual, we have a boatload of rewards for different levels of funding -- t-shirts, coffee cups, books, steak knives, and much more. But I know you’ll want to support Professor Buzzkill because you’re a patron of history and a great humanitarian.

Risks and challenges

Here are our main challenges:

1. Scheduling. Buzzkill Events will be held in important cities and towns. We will be competing with other organizations for the best venues and we'll have to spend a ton of time negotiating with colleges, bars, and other gathering places.

2. Promotion. For the first time, we'll have to pay for promotion in these major markets. That's not only expensive, but we'll have to work hard to choose the most effective promotional avenues.

3. Making events fresh. We can't just repeat debates and lectures from one city to the next. We make history compelling and exciting by being fresh and interesting. That means new topics and new angles for every event. That takes time and research help.

4. Expanding the blog and podcast. Making the Buzzkill Bookshelf and Quote or No Quote their own weekly episodes means more podcast editing fees, more syndication fees, and more blog editing.
