An open letter to the Kickstarter community:
Over the past seven years, with the help of this community, we've launched over 40 products into the world. These products shared—or at least attempted to share—some meaningful common traits: they were made to "get it right" (to be the best possible incarnation of a useful thing), and they were made with your help. Not every product we've made has been perfect. Sometimes, we bit off more than we could chew in the name of unique product features or bold technical endeavors. We haven't always nailed it. But we've done our best to honor the get it right mission with each new effort, and to do right by each and every backer who stood up to join the cause.
Sometimes, less is more. Our first campaign, the hero product of "getting it right," was a simple spatula that started a revolution in long-lasting, sustainable kitchen tools. It was thoughtfully designed, and to its detractors, little more than some good-looking silicone on a stick. But it made a worldwide impact, and the campaign that brought it to life brought with it a relationship to community that we've never forgotten.
We're back with a humble offering. A few new products that embody the original spirit of GIR in all its simplicity, and in all its grassroots glory. These are the products that backer after backer has requested - far more often than a fancy coffee grinder, or a unique tong mechanism. Simple products that just GET. IT. RIGHT.
You're a part of our mission. Whether you're backing your first campaign or your hundred-and-first, our products start as a partnership—a friendship—with you. That's why they come with a lifetime guarantee—that's what you'd do for your friends, right? It's why there will always be a real live human on the other side of the screen or telephone to help out when something goes wrong—because that's what you'd do for your friends, too. And that's why, after a couple product launches that very nearly beat the life out of us, we're back knocking on the door. Because this is a partnership. And we're here to make something cool with you.
Let's do this thing.
WHAT WE'RE MAKING TOGETHER:
PEELERS, MASHERS, BASTING BRUSHES, NONSTICK TONGS, AND SPAGHETTI SPOONS
Because 1,736 backers have requested them, we're making peelers. Because 1,411 backers have requested them, we're making mashers. And because 1,294 backers have requested them, we're making basting brushes.
Because 200 backers had our original squeeze-lock tongs fail on them, and probably more of you didn't love the way they worked, we're making nonstick (yes, nonstick!) tongs with a traditional slide-lock mechanism that won't trip anyone up, ever. And last but not least, because 1,032 backers wanted spaghetti spoons more than any other new GIR product, we're making those too.
This is a big campaign, but we're going to keep the rewards simple. We've put together three different tiers: a starter set, utility set, and "kitchen drawer" set with just about everything new we're introducing. There's also a tongs-only reward, our way of saying thanks+sorry to anyone who backed our previous tongs campaign and wasn't all that happy with the mechanism. And at the $1 tier, we have a Choose Your Own Adventure reward that allows you to customize your pledge with any items you want.
Here's how that works: below, you'll find a list of products and backer-only prices alongside them. Add up the products you want, and set your pledge total accordingly. Need help with the math? Visit our handy calculator at GIR.co/calc. You'll confirm your item selections and colors in a post-campaign survey—for now, all you need to do is set the pledge amount to the sum of the products you want.
We'll be by your side the whole time, to answer questions, share insights into our product design process, and join in the friendship and joy that makes crowdfunding a meaningful endeavor.
The very best peelers have sharp steel blades that glide fast and clean, shaving thin peels without digging too deep. So that’s what we made. Twin swivel blades allow for peeling from either direction, and a 1” gap between the blade and the bridge prevents clogging for a smooth peeling experience and minimal food waste. Last but not least, the lightweight handles on our peelers feature a non-slip grip that will keep your hand from tiring out or slipping, whether dry or wet.
GIR Peelers come in both Y-handle and I-handle configurations to accommodate different peeling styles and your own grip preferences. Integrated potato-eye removers tackle hard-to-reach spots, and are included on the back of the I-handle and both sides of the Y-handle peeler for ambidextrous use. Flat, serrated, and julienne blades match up to different veggies and applications, so you've got basically every use case covered.
Our Mashers are built for better mashing, whether you prefer a smooth or chunky end result. The Perforated Masher has sharp cutouts in its plate to cut through large potatoes or puree fruit for baby food with ease. It can also crush difficult foods like small, slippery beans. The Wire Masher uses a strong steel extrusion that will never warp under pressure, and is great for chunky mashed potatoes or guacamole.
Both mashers have oblong profiles that make it easy to maneuver around bowls, with ergonomic grips that offer the best mashing leverage. With clog-free designs and handles long enough to avoid hot steam and messy knuckles, mashing has never been faster or more efficient!
Designed for precision on delicate tasks (like applying egg wash to pie dough), and efficiency on bigger jobs (like glazing a rack of ribs), GIR’s Basting Brushes combine a slew of must-have features. Their wide brushes contain two types of bristles: a tapered outer set, and a series of zig-zagging perforated flaps in the middle to catch generous amounts of liquid with no need for continuous reapplication. They’re durable, flexible but not floppy, and easy to control with grippy, comfortable handles.
Our basting brushes come in two different sizes to cover just about every use case. They both feature our patent-pending Stay Cool® fiberglass core and pharmaceutical grade, platinum-cured silicone—so they won't melt, retain heat or degrade from the inside out like other tools might.
Not long ago, we made tongs featuring a patented one-hand locking mechanism that didn't always work as expected. It was a great concept, but the execution ended up stymied by the laws of physics and basic mechanics. We're not repeating that mistake.
Our latest tongs feature sharp nylon blades and a traditional slide lock mechanism. Made with surgical grade 316 stainless steel, they’ll never rust or tarnish. The tong blades conform to bowls and pans at an ideal angle, grip precisely, and slide gracefully underneath delicate foods. A 35° opening angle provides comfort and control. Best of all, they can be used safely on high quality nonstick cooking surfaces without risking unsightly scratches or damage. And of course, they come in three different sizes so you can always count on having the right tong for any task, from salads to searing.
Like our critically-acclaimed ladle, our spaghetti spoon has a flexible front edge to squish into tight corners and grab every last noodle. The center drainage holes are small enough to prevent macaroni from slipping through, but big enough to drain quickly. Nine teeth are thoughtfully spaced for maximum scooping efficiency.
Risks and challenges
With seven successful Kickstarter campaigns to our credit, and rewards from all of them delivered to backers over the globe, we're ready for this next partnership with you all.
Here's what we've already overcome:
Design - These products are fully designed. Though plenty of wonderful campaigns start their funding process at the "prototype" stage, this ain't that. We've completed engineering verification tests at the factory and filmed our project video in a live kitchen using production-grade samples.
Tooling - We got a head-start on tooling the molds for these products so that we have the best possible chance of timely delivery.
Here's where things can get tricky:
Shipping delays - We've shipped on time in five out of seven previous campaigns, and we will do whatever it takes to deliver these rewards on time and in good shape. Worldwide shipping can be additionally troublesome, but we've sent tens of thousands of packages around the globe and we're ready to do it again. One thing we do know is that when delays come, they're usually significant. It's likely that we'll deliver on time for this campaign, but if we don't it'll be because we've hit a major production hiccup. Sometimes, that means we need to start from scratch on anything from production to tooling to the design itself. It's very expensive for us when that happens, but we've never passed that cost along to backers and we've always done our best to deliver even when the odds are against us.
Over-funded campaign - As always, if we're heavily over-funded, we'll make sure that communication with backers stays current and transparent so that no one feels lost in the crowd.
Here's why you can believe us:
We know what it takes for things to go right, and we know a lot of the things that could go wrong, too. Having learned from lots of these good and bad experiences, we're confident we can get a great product to your doorsteps, on time and just the way you'd expect a good friend to do it. Honestly, transparently, and with our heads, hearts, and finances aligned.
