ZEROHOUR will light up Las Vegas at the 2014 International CES -
ZEROHOUR is the most versatile tactical-grade flashlight with battery backup ever created. Its modular and multipurpose design combines the features of the best standalone devices on the market, and takes them to the next level:
Constructed with aircraft aluminum and achieving a maximum 1,000 lumen output, ZEROHOUR can be used in virtually any situation that demands illumination. Multiple illumination modes make it a great all-around flashlight.
Portable USB Battery Backup
ZEROHOUR can be transformed into a sleek and compact battery backup with 10,000mAh of power, enough to charge multiple USB devices. Easy to carry in a backpack, purse, or pocket, take this waterproof battery backup with you wherever you go.
Waterproof Match Case
Remove the internals and batteries from the body tube and ZEROHOUR becomes a nearly indestructible capsule to keep your valuables dry and protected. Use the case to store matches, keys, lighters, money, make-up, first aid, and other small items.
We’ve been business partners for over six years, and currently own a company specializing in LED technology. Last year in Central America, we spent many days and nights of outdoor activities, and like all modern adventurers, we used our mobile phones and Go Pro to take hours of video and countless photos of our excursions. Without fail, our phones would be completely dead by sunset, leaving us disconnected and in the dark.
We realized we needed a reliable battery backup that could keep our devices powered through the day, and a quality flashlight to guide us at night. After extensive research, we could not find a product that met our expectations. Our mission was suddenly clear: we decided to use our LED manufacturing experience to design our own.
First, we listed all the features we expected to see in a high quality flashlight with battery backup:
Inspired by the simplicity of the original Maglite flashlight (and the awesomeness of a lightsaber), we next worked to deliver these features in a superior body/housing.
*Size comparison with a MagLite 2-D Cell Flashlight. ZeroHour is pictured with the flat cap and black anodized bezel.
We focused on designing an enclosure that achieved tactical flashlight standards, but with a goal to integrate a customizable battery backup. We then took our design even further by making the ZEROHOUR body completely modular: you can easily change, replace, or upgrade components.
Each ZEROHOUR will be constructed with premium black 6061 aircraft aluminum and a Type III hard-anodized anti-abrasive finish. Topped with a 304 stainless steel bezel, backers can pledge for additional bezels in select colors.
Waterproof and Dustproof
Like the best tactical flashlights, ZEROHOUR can withstand extreme conditions. Fully submersible in water up to one meter (IPX8 1m certified), this waterproof, water resistant, and dust-proof flashlight will not let you down.
Gold Plated Internals
Internals and spring contacts are gold plated to provide extended life and higher corrosion resistance.
We tame the sheer power of the ZEROHOUR for your comfort with a ridged LED housing that stays cool to the touch.
CE and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Materials) Compliant
ZEROHOUR has been rigorously tested to reflect international standards of quality, safety, and environmental responsibility.
ZEROHOUR shines with a CREE XM-L U3 LED (Made in the USA), capable of an exceedingly bright 1,000 maximum lumen output.
As a multi-purpose tactical flashlight, ZEROHOUR features four levels of illumination and two safety modes:
- Low (20 lumens)
- Medium (400 lumens)
- High (800 lumens)
- Maximum (1000 lumens)
- Strobe (1000 lumens)
- SOS (1000 lumens)
Under normal conditions using three 3400mAh lithium batteries, ZeroHour provides up to 24+ hours of illumination when set on low, and 6+ hours on high power.

Typical battery backups sacrifice charging capacity and features in favor of small and minimalistic design. Most also use proprietary or non-replaceable batteries, which means they stop holding their charge over time through normal wear and tear. ZEROHOUR was designed with strength and flexibility to meet all your power needs, and we did it with no trade-offs:
- Uses up to three 18650 lithium batteries, capable of providing over 10,000mAh of power.
- Can function with one, two, or three batteries present.
- Batteries are rechargeable, removable, and replaceable.
- Quality, trusted brand-name battery cells will be manufactured by Sanyo (2,600mAh) and Panasonic (3,400mAh).
When using three 3400mAh 18650 batteries, you have the power and freedom to charge two different devices at the same time.
Dual USB ports
1.5 amp port for standard devices (iPhone, Galaxy, GoPro) and 2.1 amp port for larger devices and rapid speed charging (iPad).
Charging Your Devices
A fully charged ZEROHOUR XD with 10,000mAh of battery capacity can charge:
- iPhone seven times
- Galaxy five times
- Nokia Lumia five times
- ZTE Blade six times
- LG Optimus six times
- iPad Air two times
- Most electronic devices with USB charge ports, including mobile smartphones, tablets, MP3 players, digital cameras and camcorders, portable speakers and many Bluetooth-enabled devices.
*actual number of charges may vary

12/15/2013 Video Update
*Please note that the Open End cap was used in the video above. Each flashlight will include an Open End cap as well as a Flat Cap. The Flat Cap will keep the USB end covered and water-proof.
We believe that all products should have both form and function, practicality and efficiency. ZEROHOUR goes beyond existing products by providing groundbreaking modularity, so whether you want to carry the full flashlight with battery backup, the backup only, or hollow out the insides to use as a match case, we’ve got you covered.
Each ZEROHOUR includes a flat cap and open end cap, so you can keep your battery backup accessible or sleek and compact. You can also make your ZEROHOUR attachable with our carabiner cap, included with ZEROHOUR Standard and up. All caps screw onto either end of the battery backup.
When you're not using your carabiner or flat caps, we've included covers to keep your USB ports squeaky clean.
Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime
Combining multiple levels of illumination, an array of battery power options, and the ability to transform, we are confident that ZEROHOUR offers you unparalleled control and versatility.
To produce one of the most durable battery backup flashlights on the market, we enlisted an overseas flashlight manufacturer who we have worked with for over five years. They connected us with a battery backup manufacturer, and together our designs and their experience and resources will produce ZEROHOUR to our exact specifications. ZEROHOUR is currently patent pending.
Thirty days after we gave our manufacturer the go ahead, we received our fully functional prototype. The quality was amazing!
Both the internal and external components will undergo additional fine tuning before mass production. Changes include:
- Anti-abrasive finish will be improved.
- Laser engraved unique serial/model numbers.
- A 1.5 amp USB port and a 2.1 amp USB port (prototype ports were both 1.5 amp).
- LED indicator lights will be easier to read.
- Overcharge/discharge protection.
- CE and RoHS certified.
12/12/2013 Update - Latest battery holder with above adjustments integrated:
We have taken all the necessary steps from sketches to 3D renders, from printing prototypes to testing functional prototypes.
We have invested a lot of our own money, sleepless nights, and months of hard work and dedication, and now we need your help in these final stages to make our innovative dream a reality!
We’ve turned to Kickstarter to raise the money necessary to make the ZEROHOUR available to everyone. If you believe in our project, your backing pays for costs that are inherently higher for a start-up: production/tooling, packaging design, shipping, the many included accessories and trusted, brand-name batteries, as well as the costs of meeting the quality, safety, and environmental responsibility standards that reflect our intent to make ZeroHour the best.
Your pledge for a ZeroHour flashlight will help fulfill the minimum order and deliver a great reward to you, but you're also pledging because you believe in us and our vision for ZeroHour. With your support, ZeroHour’s success will power a new brand that you can rely on for many future innovations in modern outdoor gear.
Any level of backing is appreciated, with rewards kicking in for as little as $1. All pledge levels that reward a ZEROHOUR flashlight will include the following:
- ZEROHOUR anodized aluminum body
- Stainless steel bezel
- 5V/2A USB power adapter
- USB charging cable
- Carrying bag
- Open end cap
- Flat cap (two for XD and up)
- Carabiner cap (Standard and up)
- Your name will be listed on our zerohourxd.com website (XD and up)
For the "flashaholics" who already have 18650 batteries, we’ve created a Flashlight Only reward that does not include batteries. If you love everything about ZEROHOUR and want the whole shebang, we have options that offer increased battery power, additional caps, colored bezels, and for the true ZEROHOUR baller, 24-karat gold plating!
Backers can pledge an additional $20 to any flashlight reward for an additional anodized aluminum bezel (in Nighthawk black, Cardinal red, Cadmium yellow, Pixie pink, Cobalt blue, or limited edition Kickstarter green).
Backers who pledge an additional $20 to any flashlight reward for a colored bezel will receive a matching button bezel for FREE! (Exclusive to Kickstarter)
Risks and challenges
Our timeline keeps us on schedule to finish production and deliver the flashlights into your hands by March/April 2014. Due to our manufacturer and suppliers being overseas, there is the chance of other factors beyond our control that may delay the project deadline. If production pushes too far into January, backers may have to wait until our factory returns from their yearly one-month holiday, which would delay delivery. Our ultimate goal is to raise all the funding early so that we can negotiate an early start with the manufacturer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Tactical flashlights typically feature premium construction and components, and have far higher battery power and LED illumination capabilities. In other words, a tactical flashlight is nothing like the plastic one sold at the supermarket that takes regular batteries and emits a low-lumen light beam. ZeroHour is designed with features that compete with the best tactical flashlights on the market, including aircraft aluminum construction, waterproof up to one meter, gold-plated internals, a CREE LED with 1,000 maximum lumen output, four levels of illumination and two safety modes, and rechargeable lithium ion batteries capable of providing over 10,000mAh of power.
Yes. The batteries that come with the ZEROHOUR are replaceable. You do not have to purchase a new flashlight/battery backup when the batteries stop holding a charge. Our high quality batteries are rated for 1,000 cycles but we recommend replacing them every 500 cycles or whenever you feel they have become unreliable.
Protected batteries have a small circuit board that protects the battery from overcharging, over-discharging and in some cases overheating. This circuit board raises the cost of the battery but ensures that your batteries are not ruined or worse (explosions can occur) in overcharge/discharge situations. The Sanyo and Panasonic batteries included with ZeroHour Standard and XD are protected.
Unprotected batteries are cheaper because they do not have a protective circuit board. They should only be used in a device which has its own built-in safeguards. ZeroHour’s circuit board has built-in overcharge/discharge protection, meaning it also supports unprotected batteries. These protections will work whether you’re charging or using the flashlight or the battery back-up.
So ZeroHour covers you either way, giving you more protection and versatility with your battery choices.
For Flashlight only pledgers using their own batteries, keep within the following dimensions: maximum length: 68.5mm, maximum diameter: 18.4mm
Ingress Protection (IP) ratings were developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission to provide clear guidelines for how much dust and water a device can take on before it is harmed.
The water protection range falls between 0-8: 0 = no protection, 4 = protected from splashing water, and 8 = protected against complete, continuous submersion under water. After 8, manufacturers add a depth rating to indicate how deep a waterproof device can be submerged.
ZeroHour is IPX8 certified up to one meter, which means it achieves the highest level of protection (complete, continuous submersion) and can go up to one meter deep.
You can carry ZeroHour through a storm, keep it by your side as you cross a stream, or play submarine with it in the bathtub.
Shipping weight of the ZeroHour is 2 lbs. ZeroHour will be shipped in retail packaging complete with all accessories, in box dimensions approximately 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2".
The fastest and most reliable service is Priority Mail International® Medium Flat Rate Box through the United States Postal Service (estimated 6 to 10 business days). The cost to us starts at a minimum $40.95 (Canada), but we are charging all international backers the same price, $40, and taking on the additional costs ourselves. We will also be purchasing shipping insurance as well as tracking confirmation service for every order. The calculator we are using can be found on the USPS website: http://postcalc.usps.com
Our goal is to get the ZeroHour into your hands as inexpensively as possible. We are approaching USPS to negotiate a bulk shipping cost reduction (which will depend on how many ZeroHours are pledged for during the campaign). If we can obtain a reduced rate, we will adjust the international shipping rate after our campaign ends and pass the savings on to you.
We will not be drop-shipping from our factory. All ZeroHours will be shipped to our warehouse in Fountain Valley, California, USA and we will be handling order fulfillment in-house.
6061 aircraft aluminum is a strong aluminum alloy that is used for everything from truck bodies to machine parts to, yes, aircraft. It's tough, corrosion-resistant, and can be anodized, which leads us to...
Type III hard-anodizing generates a coating to protect devices from corrosion, abrasion, and other atmospheric wear. Type III is thicker than Type I & II coatings and produces a finish that is both smoother and harder, which means increased resistance and durability.
ZeroHour features both 6061 aircraft aluminum body construction and a Type III hard-anodized finish.
Single clicks will take you through the four illumination modes, Low-1, Medium-2, High-3, Maximum-4, then back to Low-1.
Strobe-5 and SOS-6 modes are accessible by double-clicking the power button from any of the four illumination modes. Turn on the flashlight to any mode, then double-click to get to Strobe-5, and double-click again to get to SOS-6. If you don't like Strobe or SOS, don't double click, and you'll never see them.
ZeroHour is also programmed with mode-memory, meaning it will return to your last used mode when you power on again. Just power off by pressing the power button for 1.5 seconds; when you power on, you're back where you were. This allows you to stay on your favorite mode, and you're never forced to cycle through the other modes unless you want to.
Our circuit board is not re-programmable, but we understand this option is popular with our flashlight experts, and have added it to our list of backer suggested modes/options for future upgrades.
Yes! You can have the flashlight on while charging your USB devices. This is also a great feature for cyclists who would like to use it as a bike light while charging.
Yes! Because ZeroHour is modular you can pledge for the Battery Backup Only now (the $85 reward), and in the future, individual components such as the Flashlight Head will be made available. All you will have to do is attach the Flashlight Head to make a complete ZeroHour USB Battery Backup Flashlight.
This is also the case for the ZeroHour Match Case ($25 reward). Once you have the Match Case, you will only need to add a USB Battery Backup Holder (the internal components) and Flashlight Head to convert it to a complete ZeroHour Flashlight. All modular components and parts including batteries that are not already included in the pledge reward can be pre-ordered after campaign funding.
Many of you want to keep ZeroHour close and accessible, so we are actively developing a bike mount, a wall mount, and a personal holster. You've also told us you want to keep ZeroHour clean and protected: all pledge levels that reward a ZeroHour flashlight will include a carrying pouch. We are also working on front and rear silicone caps, which will protect from drops as well as prevent rolling due to their hexagonal shape.
Once we hit our goal and start ZeroHour production, we will begin building out our line of accessories so we can offer you more options for your ZeroHour. Keep sending us your suggestions!
Many of today's portable devices are sealed shut or contain parts that are sautered in, essentially locking you into its singular form and out any possible changes. Modular construction offers much greater flexibility. Twelve main components make up the entire ZeroHour, and each part is made to easily unscrew or slide apart. It's simple to clean, replace, or upgrade parts. When your batteries die, you don't have to replace the entire ZeroHour flashlight.
You can also carry ZeroHour in several different forms to best suit your needs: Use the full ZeroHour flashlight with battery backup, or remove the flashlight head module and twist on an end cap to carry the battery backup module only. If you remove the battery backup housing as well, you're down to the hollowed out match case module.
ZeroHour's modular design allows us to create customized accessories and future replacement head modules that would simply twist on or attach to turn your ZeroHour into something new, all while keeping the backup power you need for your USB devices.
