The world of 3D printing is exploding, but many schools have special challenges that make it difficult to acquire a 3D printer. We need your help to sidestep these challenges and simply GIVE THEM TO SCHOOLS. Two 3D printers for $700 will be the seeds you can use to grow a community of Makers in your local school.
The Printrbot jr. - the tipping point?

For Schools and Makers, alike.
Education is one of my passions. I have three kids and I know first hand that not all schools can offer the technical training like I received at my high school. I took drafting, machine shop, auto body, auto mechanics and electronics. Shop class helped make me who I am today. Sadly, shop classes have all but faded away, but the "Maker Spirit" is alive and well. 3D printers can be the center of the next "shop class" - it is a tool that makes other tools. I believe that students who embrace this technology, and the Maker Community, will lead the next wave of businesses and ideas that change the world.
Traditional public schools and young students are our chief target with this project, but we have heard from all sorts of Makers dreaming of what they could do with a 3D printer. So this project is for everyone who wants to start a community of Makers. Maybe you want to start a club, or meetup group - that's how I got started even before my first kickstarter! Perhaps you are home schooled. Perhaps you have a friend that you want to partner with in this new, wild, open source hardware world. Better yet, maybe you want to give a 3D printer to TWO SCHOOLS! I will leave it up to you, but my hope is that you will purpose to train, volunteer, demo, support or give to the benefit of students at a local school. Together, we can change the world.
Risks and challenges
Sourcing parts and scaling your business is hard (we have done it) and can slow the process of delivering product. There are always supply chain challenges in manufacturing.
I have labored for months at Printrbot and now have the knowledge and some of the best sources in the world for the parts needed to build these bots. We have overcome immense challenges and have scaled our 3D printer business to deliver hundreds of printers each month.

The jr. CAN print with ABS, but since it does not ship with a heated bed, it is INTENDED chiefly as a PLA printer. The power requirements are lower without the heated bed, and PLA can print on a room-temperature platform without any warping (like abs). So it CAN print ABS just fine, but you will want to add a heated bed and a bigger power supply. Also, stick to PLA if you someday add a battery - those heated beds will really eat up your battery life!
.1mm layer height and beyond. .1mm is where you stop seeing the lines. A realistic expectation would be to expect some very light texture on the surface at this resolution - not silky smooth like glass.
150 mm/sec would be the top recommended speed. I run mine around 100 mm/sec to keep things a little less demanding. The speed of a print relies greatly on your choices and settings. 100% infill dramatically increased the print time, where 0% infill (hollow) would be much faster.

Yes! We have upgrades appearing in our online store soon. You can add a battery pack to print anywhere or on the go. You can also add an LCD panel to start and control the bot without the need for a computer. You can add a heated bed and thermistor to print ABS. You can lengthen the Z bars if you like as well.
In current form (Dec. 1), we are using a 3mm Ubis hotend. A 1.75mm hotend will be available very, very soon this month. Each has its advantages.
In short, not yet. I am currently working on a printed version, but it will be even smaller and will not fold. The requirement for the smaller, printable version - "Printrbot jr. RepRap" - is that it must print on a Printrbot Jr. The jr is my smallest printer yet, so it is a challenge. The idea is to give students the power to quickly replicate a true RepRap using only a Printrbot jr. The "Printrbot Jr. RepRap" will be as bear-bones and tiny as it gets... reaching even more students.
