Applications

Here are some applications:

Printed-Light can be used in the office, dining room, kitchen and the living room.

Description

Printed-Light is a 3W, 25,000 hour LED desk or table light. It has no moving parts and is activated by a proximity sensor. The finish is in gloss white and matt black. We make a design feature out of the electronic components. It comes with a power supply, four international interchangeable plug pins and a storage pouch for the cable. It can also be run from a laptop or computer.

Personal Engraved Nameplate

We have had several requests for personal engraved nameplates on each light. We have discussed this with the engraver and have come up with a scheme to supply each Printed-Light with a personal engraved nameplate without any extra charge. It will look like this:

Passion for Design

I am an industrial design consultant. I design and develop products for manufacturing clients. I wanted to see what it would be like to be a 'client'. Poacher turned gamekeeper.

Turning wood, metals and plastics into functional and beautiful products, putting them into production and then marketing, selling and distributed them is hard work, sometimes super stressful, exciting, depressing and always great fun!

One design, three products. There are other variants of Printed-Light to be developed: floor standing light, wall mounted light, ceiling lights, etc. We will be able to make these from the tooling we need to put Printed-Light into production. Here are the concepts and early models:

One design, three products, design.

Design and Development

We have conducted extensive design and development testing making more than sixty models, test rigs, prototypes, Technology Demonstrators and field trial samples. Here are some of them:

Kickstarters, get involved

Choose the next colour for Printed-Light: black, red, blue, orange or yellow. Send us an email with your colour choice, most colour voted for will be used on Batch 2 and we will call it, for example, "Printed-Light 'Kickstarter Red'.

Marketing

We have visited international lighting exhibitions, done market research in UK, Denmark, Belgium, Germany and Italy and extensive web trawls. There is nothing like Printed-Light. It is fresh thinking, new and unique. We believe there is a market of at least fifty products a month for this high end, designer/architect specified light.

Printed-Light has been short-listed for the prestigious British Engineering Excellence Awards Best New Product (2013) and Best Materials Application (2014).

USP's

The designs unique features are: there are no moving parts, it is activated by a proximity sensor, it requires no expensive and energy hungry injection moulding processes, the aluminium acts as a heat sink for the LED and provides the structural form of the light. You can see why we call it 'Form Follows Function'.

We can make three different products from the same tooling: desk light , floor standing light, wall mounted lights. This Desk Light is the first of them.

Technology and Manufacturing

Printed-Light uses Insulated Metal Sub-strate (IMS) manufacturing technology. This means the electronics are embedded onto a metal (aluminium) printed circuit board (MPCB). We have the MPCB's made and electronic components surface mounted by hand under a microscope at DK Thermal. We then hand mask them in the studio. Then they are painted and formed at Teversham Engineering.  At our studio we load the software, assemble, test and pack. Hand building Printed-Light is long and laborious process. We need masking and forming jigs to simplify the process.

Making the MPCB's at DK Thermal, the forming machine at Teversham Engineering, assembly in our studio.

What your support will do

We have already spent more than £25K on proof of principle prototypes, design, prototype development, printed circuit board tooling, Technology Demonstrators and market research in five countries. Our Kickstarter  Target is £7500. This is for manufacturing tooling: linishing masks, painting masks, and forming tools which will allow us to put Printed-Light into production (£4.5K) and compliance testing for CE and UL marks (£3K).

Kickstarters

Help us get a start here, please. We are almost ready to put Printed-Light into production, we know there is a market  for our product and we know the design is scalable into other variants. We just need your help to get there. If we can sell 50 lights we will be on our way.

Thank you,

Warwick and Chris.

Risks and challenges

Hand building Printed-Light is a time consuming and challenging operation. Mistakes do happen which can result in unusable assemblies. We need to minimise the risks by commissioning a set of production jigs and masks as described, above.

When set-backs occur (and they will) we can usually find a work around because we have considerable experience in production engineering and the facilities to solve problems.
