Primal Supply Meats is a woman-owned butchery and local sourcing company providing sustainable, pasture-raised meats to Philadelphia.
Since founding our business in 2016, we’ve grown our supply chain to support more than a dozen local farmers and 2 family-owned slaughterhouses in our region. Our wholesale program, which gives chefs access to sustainably raised whole animals, has helped put pasture-raised meats on the menus of more than 25 restaurants in and around the city. Our Butcher’s Club, a weekly subscription service for fresh-cut packages of meat, is available for home cooks at 11 locations around Philadelphia in partnership with local businesses.
We source directly from local farmers who raise animals in natural, healthy environments and manage their land responsibly. We promise 100% sourcing transparency and guarantee the highest quality product to the chefs and home cooks we supply.
We've participated in local farmers markets, launched a pop-up winter market series and formed a partnership with an independently owned grocery market to sell our meat directly to retail customers. The demand for our product has been positively overwhelming.
In 2017 the readers of Edible Philly voted us Local Heroes for our work that "benefits small farmers and customers alike".
We're Building The Butcher Shop of Our Dreams
This spring, Primal Supply Meats will open its first brick-and-mortar butcher shop in the vibrant East Passyunk neighborhood of south Philly. It will be a traditional meat counter, where we can welcome and connect with our customers. We’ll offer fresh meat cut-to-order, as well as specialty groceries. We'll also host butchery classes and special events such as local product tastings.
The project is already underway, and we are launching this crowdfunding campaign to purchase refrigeration, including the meat locker and butcher cases. This equipment is critical for properly storing and showcasing our locally sourced, pasture-raised meats in the butcher shop.
We are asking for you all to be a part of this next chapter in our business, allowing us to support more farmers and reach more customers in and around the city of Philadelphia.

Risks and challenges
Primal Supply Meats utilizes the craft of whole animal butchery to minimize waste and maximize impact on our local economy. Adding a traditional retail program to our model will not only help us to increase our sourcing commitments to farmers in the region, but also to better utilize the whole animals we purchase.
We are a small business, sourcing from and supporting many other small businesses, and there are countless challenges that arise on a weekly basis. Since day one, we have been adaptive and collaborative in our efforts to build a sustainable business model by diversifying our supply chain and working closely with both our partner farmers and our customers.
The opening of our butcher shop is eagerly awaited by the Philadelphia food community, and we are excited to serve our city and the neighborhood we will soon call home.
