What is the Pre-Vinylite Society?
The Pre-Vinylite Society is a loose network of sign enthusiasts and advocates for a renewed interest in craftsmanship and the aesthetics of our built environment.
The aim of the Pre-Vinylite Society is to encourage sign painters, sign enthusiasts, artists, writers, documentarians, business owners, and the general public to be more aware of their aesthetic surroundings and take pride in their neighborhoods by creating, commissioning, documenting, and appreciating quality signage, art, and architecture.
The Pre-Vinylite Society Journal
The idea for a print magazine came from our love of tangible objects and a desire to explore the contexts of sign painting and other applied arts. As practitioners and enthusiasts of hand painted signs, it made sense to celebrate signs and their many contexts with a beautifully printed magazine that showcases the artistry inherent in this field.
Unlike other publications in the field of sign making, the Pre-Vinylite Society Journal is unique in its approach to the craft of sign painting as an art in conversation with the world in which it exists. The PVS Journal views sign painting and its adjacent arts not merely as trades to be mastered, but as topics worthy of varied discussion.
Issue One is a 64 page, perfect bound magazine, printed on high quality paper and featuring original artwork by Josh Luke of Best Dressed Signs on the front and back cover.
It features essays, stories, interviews, and inspirations on sign painting, art, design, and their contexts, written by a variety of artists whose work spans from calligraphy to architecture.
Rewards Add-on Menu
To avoid getting too complicated with our backer levels, we've made an add-on menu so that everyone can get some buttons, a patch, a T-shirt, or more than one magazine, regardless of which backer level you choose. After you select your backer level, just increase your pledge amount according to the item's price on the menu below, and we'll survey you when the campaign ends to mark down what you got.
If we exceed our goal
Any money that we raise above our funding goal to print copies, pay our contributors, and break even on our rewards, will go towards funding Issue Two. We would love to offer better pay for the work our contributors put into this endeavor and make the PVS Journal, Issue Two a truly worthy sequel! Thank you for your support!!
Risks and challenges
Issue One of the PVS Journal is completely finished and ready to print. We have already received a proof from the printer and it looks great!
Once we reach our goal, we will immediately hit "send" to the printers and we should be able to start sending out the magazine and rewards within a week after receiving the backer surveys from you.
The printed rewards are already in production so unless we hit some hurdles in the printing process, we don't foresee too many challenges in adhering to our shipping schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
