The Non-Visible Museum of Art is where ideas and images become part of the New Economy. Praxis collaborates with James Franco on this.

Museum of Non-Visible Art Opens Its Doors

This is a conceptual art project by Praxis, curated by Vallejo Gantner, artistic director of PS122 in Manhattan. Praxis is the collaborative art team of Brainard and Delia Carey, and in this project, James Franco has collaborated with them. Praxis has been in the Whitney Museum Biennial and James Franco has exhibited his art work internationally.

The Non-Visible Museum is an extravaganza of imagination, a museum that reminds us that we live in two worlds: the physical world of sight and the non-visible world of thought. Composed entirely of ideas, the Non-Visible Museum redefines the concept of what is real. Although the artworks themselves are not visible, the descriptions open our eyes to a parallel world built of images and words. This world is not visible, but it is real, perhaps more real, in many ways, than the world of matter, and it is also for sale.

Important Note: When you contribute to this Kickstarter project, you are not buying a visible piece of art! You will not receive a painting or a film or a photograph in your mailbox. What you will receive is something even more fascinating: The opportunity to collaborate in an act of artistic creation. You will receive a title card with a description of a piece of art, as well as a letter of authentication. You may mount this card on a blank wall in your home or gallery. What comes next is up to you! The artwork comes to life—and takes on full personal meaning—in your imagining and describing of it, both to yourself and to your visitors. You may also choose to sell the non-visible artwork to another collector, to exhibit it elsewhere, or to lend it back to Praxis when we take the Non-Visible Museum on tour.

As these non-visible works of art are bought, exchanged, and resold, they open our eyes to the unseen universe that exists at every moment, and we can share that universe. It is like finding the code beneath. We exchange ideas and dreams as currency in the New Economy.

In the near future we will invite more artists, writers, and others to contribute works to the Non-Visible Museum so that it can keep expanding. You can sign up on our website to be on the mailing list. http://www.nonvisiblemuseum.com

For now, we want to tour this museum in the U.S. and Europe. For each exhibition, we will give a tour of the Non-Visible Museum, describing to all those in attendance what they are looking at and imagining. As this tour grows, we will continue to collaborate and add new works.

Thank you for reading this far and dreaming with us.

A MANIFESTO: TO CLARIFY THE NON-VISIBLE

1.

Art itself is nothing.

All that matters is what is left.

The afterglow.

The ambition is to produce this.

We strive for an afterglow with no thing preceding.

A glow.

Phosphenes.

2.

The only surface worth painting is the mind of the viewer.

The viewing of art should not require eyes.

Art should be entoptic.

We strive to force meditation.

The prisoner’s cinema.

Phosphenes.

3.

Art is without value until it faces the market.

The market purveys value.

Money is banal until it has been spent.

Money spent on art is money transformed.

Money spent is mourned.

This mourning is eased by art.

We strive to enhance mourning.

Mourning is a response to what is not there.

An afterglow.

4.

What you see does not matter.

What you have seen is everything.

All you truly buy is the afterglow.

It has value.

5.

You must pay more for the glow that has no thing.

Nothing before.

Pure after.

Phosphenes.

RULES FOR THE CREATION OF THE NON-VISIBLE

You shall not add to the banal.  (You shall not build.)

You shall not litter the world with art. (You shall not make.)

What you have not made must be beautiful.

What you have not made must have value.

You must bring what you have not made to market.

(The market will give it value.)

You must give to the market absence.

(Money is banal until spent.)

You must offer the market anguish.

(What is spent is painful.)

You must make the market beautiful.

(Nothing beautiful without pain.)

You must increase the world behind the eyes.

The wreck of the Medusa.

It left us with phosphenes.

You must conjure them and sell them.

Only when you have done this are you one of us.

FAQ

  • To begin with, we want MONA to grow and be an alternate space as well as alternate economy for artists and the arts. We would like to bring more artists into the museum by generating more rewards, which we do can until this project closes on the 31st of August 2011.
The artists that we accept, will share in the revenue from the sales of their work when the project ends.

However, rather than working directly with artists ourselves, we are looking for curators of MONA.

That means if you are an artist, writer or anything else and you would like to curate some of your own non-visible ideas and your friends ideas, it is possible, but this is how we want you to do it, and for now, the only way to do it, to make it work for us.

MONA curators are official for 6 months at a time after their first art works are accepted. If you are becoming a curator just to show your own non-visible idea, you have to also propose at least one art work by a friend along with yours.

We are doing this because we want the museum to grow this summer, and we want it to be done in an organized and fair way.

So here is the process for becoming a curator. Please read this and then ask questions if you have any.

    1. To be a MONA curator, you could be from any profession. You must submit two ideas for rewards in your first letter to us if you want to be considered. One of the ideas has to be authored by someone other than yourself.

    2. The ideas for rewards must be the following format:

By Praxis - Sculpture - Fur Balls - A sculpture,.....

So begin with the artists name, the medium, the title, and the reward description of your idea for an artwork, similar to the example above. You can also refer to the original kickstarter project to see reward decription examples.

    3. The total reward word count should not exceed 75 words per reward. Try to make it as brief and as poetic as possible.

4.Also, the price must be between 26 and 50 dollars and we will determine it. We will split the profits with you after deducting 12 percent for financial fees and shipping and handling of the authentication and card which we will make and ship. All proceeds to artists will be paid when the project in finished and funded in September.
The edition size of all artworks will always be twenty-five.

    5. Avoid adding more layers of invisibility. Rather than getting complex, we prefer simple ideas for paintings and drawings as well as the fantastic. But keep it clear and simple, and descriptive enough so the reader can imagine it.

    6. Remember, the only way we accept submissions, are from curators. If you would like to be a curator, send us two or more ideas as polished as possible, using the guidelines above. If we like them, we will accept them, and post them as rewards at some point.
Both ideas you send must be useable. You can send more ideas, but we will not post only one idea, there must be at least two good ones.

    7. You can ask questions, but we would prefer you just think about it and send us your curated ideas (at least two in one email) within the week. The more organized you are about it, the more it has the chance to work.

Our dream is to see the museum thriving with hundreds of artists selling non-visible works. It would add a layer to the art world, but also to the economic world of artists. Doesn't that sound good?

By Praxis - Sculpture - Fur Balls - A sculpture, the size of a human head, but round, covered with human hair taken from wigs. There are 18 of these which can be arranged, according to the site in any order you wish, so you can imagine those sculptures in your own space. When you are describing the work to your friends, feel free to rearrange everything. The feeling from this work is attractive in one way (you want to pet those balls), but it is also repulsive in the sense that they look a bit like a dead animal. The owner of this artwork will receive a title card with a description of the piece to be mounted on your wall, and used when explaining the work. By Douglas Anthony Cooper. Earthwork. An Improbable Memory. The owner of this piece will remember with full clarity an event that has never occurred. Perhaps this is a memory shared silently by the entire species. A memory that comes to individual consciousness at a moment of crisis or necessity. Perhaps you have stolen a memory from the person sitting next to you. A memory so profound and real to them that it cannot be contained within the prison of a single mind and must pierce actuality like a shard of history. The subject of this memory is a person unlike anyone you have ever encountered or will encounter again. You will long for them and mourn their absence and be forever changed by the improbable memory of their passage through your life. As the owner of this artwork you will receive a title card with a description of the piece. You may mount this on your wall. It will prove useful when explaining the work. You will also receive a letter of authentication and a pdf copy of the catalog. Please take note. This is important. You are not buying a visible piece of art. You are buying the title and a description of the invisible artwork. This has no bearing on the question of ownership of course. It is entirely yours.

By Douglas Anthony Cooper – Earth Work – “Newton’s Ghost.” Only one of these invisible works exists: you are purchasing a unique piece. “Newton’s Ghost” is a vast hollow sphere of glass, rising like a bubble through the surface of the earth. It is 150 meters in diameter (almost a tenth of a mile) – the approximate dimensions of Étienne-Louis Boullée’s unbuilt “Cenotaph for Newton.” Only the very top has emerged and is visible: this is a circle of glass, one meter in diameter. Because the visible section represents only a fraction of the sphere’s surface, it appears flat, but it is in fact subtly curved, like the horizon. As the owner of this artwork, you will receive a title card with a description of the piece. You may mount this on your wall; it will prove useful when explaining the work. You will also receive a letter of authentication and a pdf copy of the catalog. Please take note (this is important):  you are not buying a visible piece of art. You are buying the title and a description of the invisible artwork. Of course, none of this has any bearing on the question of ownership. It is entirely yours.
