WOW! What a day one! In 3 hours we hit our goal and in less than a day we hit our first stretch goal! We're excited to say that we're working hard to roll out a bunch of other products and expansion kits too.
To make it easier for everyone, here's what we're working towards next and the add-ons that are already available:
With the announcement of our programmable micro-controller based effects module we are venturing into territory that the typical DIY'er can't go easily. These modules come pre-programmed with a number of lighting effects that can be utilized out of the box, however the committed DIY'er will be able to modify or create the specific lighting effects they want with a little extra effort.
Whatever happens, thanks to all of our friends, fans, fellow gamers and hobbyists who have been patiently waiting for us to get our kits in your hands. With a little bit of luck (and your support) we’ll be launching more products in the VERY near future in time for your next trip into your design lair.
An Alpha Kit is our first special effect product. It's designed to give you a simple, easy to use and modular LED lighting kit that let you decide where you wanted the effect, and simply plug & play.
We call it the Alpha Kit because it's our first and most versatile product that you can put in models, terrain, vehicles, toys, costumes, etc.
The kit includes a PC Board to plug everything into, a 9v Battery Connector and 5 LED lighting strings.
We designed the lights to ready to be installed into your models, right out of the package. No soldering, no taping, no crimping. The lights come in 5mm or 3mm sizes, which we found to be perfect for:
- 1/125 historical models
- 28mm tabletop gaming models and terrain
- Collectables like G.I Joe, Gundam, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.
- Toys and RC and other applications.
Each of the lighting strings comes equipped with two (2) LEDs, but can be expanded to include three on a string at a later time. Individually, Alpha Kits will come pre-packaged with one Red, Yellow, Green, Blue and White LED string. For multiple quantity orders, you can select from Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet and White colors.
Here's a review from Brush4Hire on what we sent in our Alpha Kits:
With a range of color options, anyone can make simple effects like lighting eyes and weapons, to fully "pimping out" a model with a enough lights to attract a small aircraft for landing.
Want to know how easy it is to install the lights in your models, check out this demo video using one of our prototype models in our garage that only took 12 minutes!
We call our kit Modular, because it's designed to grow. Whether it's adding lights or other effects in the near future, the entire system is based on our PC Board. Want to add smoke or sound effects? Want to have a micro-controller to create flashing and flickering effects? just play it in-line with the rest of the it.
Each individual Alpha Kit order will come pre-packaged with 5 LED strings in the following colors: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue and White.

What Can You Make with Your Kits?
Here's a quick gallery of all sorts of things people have made with our kits:
Haven't We Seen This Before?
Short answer: Yes.
We cancelled our first attempt at Kickstarter because we screwed the pooch on our first attempt. From launching at 4:30 on a Friday, to not having the PR machine going before the launch - misclassifying ourselves in Tech instead of tabletop gaming, to a confusing rewards structure: We screwed up and learned our lessons.
We want to be sure that everyone actually gets their stuff as promised. To do that, we've relaunched our kickstarter with a lot of changes, and you'll notice a significantly lower goal.
If you supported us before, we hope you'll continue to do so here. If you didn't support us before, or are new to our project, we hope you believe in us enough to support us today.
Thanks to everyone for your support!
We’re Chris & Chris. It’s cute, we know…
Chris Wessling, CEO, came up with the idea for the kits about a year ago. His then 4 year old son wandered into the garage one day, and found a box of Warhammer 40K miniatures that had been collecting dust. Invigorated by the ability to share an old passion with his son, Chris bought him a new army and wondered, “Wouldn’t it be cool to put lights on this tank?” So, he researched it, looked at the tutorials and was frustrated by the complexity of what’s out there. Thus, using his US Navy nuclear reactor operator training, and NASA-spec soldering skills, he began creating the product.
A year later, he meets Chris Michaels, COO (Chris 2) – a marketing and PR guy who’s been helping launch startups, representing major tech firms and being a spokesperson for a major county fair. Chris 2 was intrigued, since he grew up building models with his dad and uncle, and remembered trying to put lights into model terrain sets and scale stealth fighters. He understood the marketing and business, and shared the passion for giving people the tools to be even more creative with their hobbies. It was a killer match and this past January, we formed PoweredPlay Gaming.
Today we’re often rubbing elbows in the Bay Area with local gamers, hobbyists, store owners and experts as we test our products, show off new prototypes and drool over the applications that other people come up with. We’re sponsoring local role-playing games, national tournaments like Adepticon and a range of other events, and we may be hosting one soon at a store near you.
Risks and challenges
We’ve been busy identifying vendors, getting samples, testing component designs, redesigning components and then testing them again, and finally placing orders. Some of the things we’re finding out in our own operational alpha stage, is what vendors to choose, and those to fire. We actually had to stop doing business with one company, not only because the quality was not what we had hoped, but because of their failure to deliver your product at the promised time.
At the close of Kickstarter we should be able to start shipping product within 10 weeks. All of non-product rewards take up to 2 weeks for completion and we will be sending them along with your full order.
Our PC Board supplier will take 6 weeks to manufacture, assemble and ship our boards. Our LED lighting strings will take up to 3 weeks to make and 10-15 days to ship from our vendor. Depending on the size of the orders, we plan on fulfilling the orders ourselves (under $50,000) or hiring a fulfillment house to help us with final distribution if Kickstarter takes off!
Getting things to our customers and everyone who supports us is our top priority. Thus, we’ve identified the highest quality and most reliable suppliers that we’ll be working with for years to come.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
