POV Dance is back with a new work at The Lefbank Project in Portland, OR. The new work, 3x3, will open in January 2014 and run for three weekends.
Like our past projects, 3x3 is an architecturally based dance, so the first challenge is always finding the right space. We look for something interesting to us, with diverse elements to dance with (think railings, stairs, ledges), and room for an audience. And there’s another hurdle – the building owner has to be willing to let us rehearse in the space for months and then perform. We are beyond thrilled that we found The Leftbank Project, which is a historic landmark with a generous owner and understanding tenants who have made us feel at home.
The building, just east of the Broadway Bridge, sat vacant for years before it was meticulously restored in 2008. It has been the site of a succession of businesses, most notably the iconic 1940s Dude Ranch jazz club, but also a creamery, a garage, a pharmaceutical company and a plastics manufacturer; it now houses an array of businesses which include everything from architecture and design firms to one of Portland’s top breweries!
Our work is about point of view – because we create in spaces not designed for dance, no audience member sees the same performance or has the same experience. This is an artistic choice – we think it makes the work all the more interesting that two audience members, right next to each other, might witness a completely different dance. In 3x3, three audiences will follow a series of three duets. To share what’s happening elsewhere in the building, we’ll be projecting video onto windows and walls. Some of this video will be sourced from cameras attached to dancers, giving the audience yet another unique perspective – the dancer’s!
Risks and challenges
We are so excited to be working with a new medium but the additional technical requirements represent a dramatic increase in overhead. As you might imagine, the installation of video, sound, and lights in a non-traditional venue with dancers and audience members moving between spaces is a daunting and expensive challenge. It is also very exciting! And the result of an immersive, audio-visual performing arts experience in a richly historical setting will be well worth it!
Here's the deal: we've got the building owner, the property manager and a number of the building tenants already involved and invested in the project; we've got a group of collaborators who have already spent countless hours planning, composing, filming, editing, sewing, choreographing and rehearsing. We have an obligation to see this through, but we simply cannot do it without you. Our total budget is just over $40,000, and we need to raise at least $7,000 through this campaign. Please help out however you can! POV Dance is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and all donations are tax-deductible. Thank you so much and we’ll see you in January!
