Hey Kickstarter, we are Andy and Martin, plant lovers and product designers who have created POTR Pots - eco friendly plant pots for the 21st century!
Introducing POTR Pots
POTR pots are flat pack plant pots designed to self- water your plants and made from 100% recycled materials!
The super simple product has been inspired by origami and has been designed from start to finish with our environment in mind.
We have spent the last three months developing a series of prototypes in a variety of shapes and materials to make our POTR vision a reality. Now we need your support to help cover the up front manufacturing costs to bring POTR Pots to life!
The benefits to backing us are more than just purchasing a beautiful modern plant pot. You will also be preventing plastic ending up in landfill, as well as supporting a start up with big ambitions to change the way we design and manufacture products to create a greener environment.

POTR Pots Features
Flat pack postage
The pots will be shipped flat packed so they can be slipped through your letter box. This ensures that POTR has the smallest carbon foot print possible from our manufacturer to your home. Once opened, they are unfolded and laid flat in their net shape.
POTR Pots are super easy (and super satisfying) to assemble using the quick draw cotton cord, transforming the flat pattern into a beautiful multi-faceted pot, capable of holding water in its base.
The cord is tied and tucked inside the pot, before the inner pot stand is assembled into a ring and placed into the pot’s base. The two ends of the cord are then looped under the inner pot stand and inserted into your plant’s soil; using an old pencil is a handy way to do this. Finally the plant can be placed on top of the inner pot stand.
Simply add water into the pot - if your plant is thirsty it will automatically start drinking the water through the cotton cord. Magic!
Water is drawn up through the cotton by the plant using tried and tested wicking technology; this is a common way to water your plants and is particularly useful if you aren’t able to water them yourself on a regular basis! With a semi transparent finish to the pots, its easy to see when your plants are getting thirsty, making it obvious when it’s time to refill.
Easy to Clean
If your pot happens to get dirty, it’s super easy to clean. Simply unfold the pot and wipe clean. The recycled polypropylene is chemically resistant and can be washed using cleaning product.
Don’t worry if you happen to knock your POTR on the floor, unlike a traditional ceramic pot it will take the fall in its stride.
If you need to store or move your pot (perhaps you’re moving home!), POTR pots can be folded into their flat pack state making them incredibly space efficient to store.
Making your house plants even greener.
Throughout their development we have been determined to make POTR Pots as environmentally friendly as possible, ensuring they fit with our long term ambition of creating a circular economy.
With this in mind, all materials used in our pots are made from 100% recycled materials and are 100% recyclable at the end of life (should you ever choose to get rid of your POTR!). All materials have been sourced from within Europe to reduce our carbon footprint when transporting the raw materials, and all manufacturing is carried out in the UK.
POTR pots have almost 100 x less CO2 footprint than clay or concrete plant pots. The reason for this is due to POTR pots being capable of fitting in a standard envelope when being delivered, whereas a traditional pot requires a much larger parcel, requiring delivery by van.
By using recycled plastic, this also drastically cuts the CO2 impact compared with producing new materials like concrete or clay. It also prevents plastics ending up in landfill sites.

Which size POTR for my house plant ?
Pre potted plants come in fairly standard sized pots, and can be classified into one of two categories:
- Diameter - generally for smaller plant pots (10cm in diameter or less at the rim)
- Volume - generally this starts at 1 litre and rises to infinity and beyond!
To begin our collection, we have designed our pots to fit a range of common house plant pot sizes:
- Small POTR Pot = 10cm diameter (0.49 litre) house plant pot or less
- Large POTR Pot = 14cm diameter (1.5 litre) house plant pot or less
POTR Pots have a little bit of give around the top rim so can fit slightly larger sizes than the recommended sizes stated above if necessary.
Having spoken with many plant shop owners, house plant enthusiasts and from our personal experience, we believe the sizes we have designed will cover a large majority of house plants. We intend to release more sizes in the future!
Designed and manufactured in the UK
To help minimize our environmental foot print, we have decided to partner with a local manufacturer based here in Bristol. Not only does this mean saving on transport, we have involved our manufacturer from the beginning, helping to eliminate risks and ensure we deliver POTR pots on time and in budget.
We have partnered with a company who specialise in die cutting - the main manufacturing process used to create our nets shapes. Not only do they have a skilled and experienced work force, they also design and manufacture the die cutting tools in house. This has allowed us to collaborate on the design of the tool from an early stage, ensuring a space efficient design which minimizes scrap off cuts.
We are excited to work together and are proud to manufacture POTR Pots here in Bristol.
We selected recycled polypropylene due to its fantastic mechanical properties. PP is robust meaning it will last a lifetime; unlike traditional plant pots, POTR pots will not break if they are dropped or knocked. The unique mechanical properties of recycled PP also ensure the longevity of the folding origami hinges.
We have chosen Bobbiny recycled cotton cord to use as our draw string and wicking cord. Not only is it 100% recycled, it looks great and works really well at wicking water. We have selected 5 colours of cord to choose from which you will be able to pick in the backer kit survey once the campaign has ended.
- 0.7mm recycled polypropylene
- 5mm / 9mm recycled cotton cord
Choose from one of our many rewards listed below! You will be able to pick your colour of cotton cord after the campaign ends.
Cotton cord colours are chosen via the backer survey after the campaign has ended. There will also be the option to add pledges once the campaign has ended if you decide you want more POTR Pots!
As designers, we believe in designing through making, therefore, we have taken a very hands on approach to developing POTR pots right from the beginning. Traditional origami techniques lie at the heart of POTR's design and functionality - we began our journey by creating hundreds of paper origami iterations, experimenting with different forms and fold functionality. We strived to achieve something that would look beautiful in your home while being incredibly functional and intuitive to use.
To select a suitable wicking cord material, we took a somewhat scientific approach to determine wicking efficiency. Using a control measure to monitor the rate of evaporation, we created an experiment where each of the cord types raced one another to transfer water from the test tube to the soil in the pot.
The winner of this experiment was the Bobbiny cotton cord.

Budget and Shipping
We’re raising the amount required for a minimum production of 250 units. This covers the cost to make the units as well as the cost for tooling which will allow us to continue making POTR Pots.
If you like POTR Pots, you just have to pay a small amount for the shipping which varies depending on your receiving destination, see details when you click the “Back this project” button. We're pretty sure this will be less than the cost of shipping a traditional plant pot!
Risks and challenges
We have purposely partnered with a local manufacturer to minimize the risk of producing POTR Pots. As there is only one manufacturing process involved in the production of the pots, we have worked closely with our manufacturer on the die cutting tooling design. Having run production trials on a small number of samples, we have gained confidence in the manufacturing process and its ability to produce our desired design.
With any hardware product, there are risks associated with producing parts at higher volumes, in particular the consistency of the part being produced. This requires fine tuning of the manufacturing process during the set up phase of production. This is something we have discussed in detail with our production partner and will begin this process as soon as we reach funding.
With a background in product design and mechanical engineering, and over 10 years combined industry experience, we are very familiar with working with manufacturers both here in the UK and abroad.
Most importantly, we are passionate about what we have created and are committed to seeing POTR Pots through to production so that our backers receive them on time and in spec.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
