Prêt-à-Porter uses the simple mechanism of worker placement to ease players into making decisions, and to foster direct competition between them, during the game. With three action pawns each round, you can choose among all the options laid out in front of you -- except for those already claimed by your competitors.
The game revolves around international fashion shows - special Show rounds in which all players will present their Collections and compete for awards in four different feature categories. Each Show round - four in all during the game - is preceded by two Working rounds.
In every Working round, 3 new Contract cards, 3 new Building cards, and 3 new Employee cards are revealed. These are your means to expand your business, invest in your company and develop long time strategy.
Signing a new Contract grants you benefits with no ongoing costs. It is a powerful way to increase your company’s capabilities, but contracts expire during the game. They are very beneficial, but they won’t add to your long time strategy as much as new Building cards will. Renting or building new facilities is expensive and can be a financial burden, but the ongoing benefits are substantial. The last type of cards, Employees, offer good value for a reasonable cost, they can make a difference and give your company the edge, provided you have enough workspace for them.
In addition to signing new Contract, building new Building, and hiring new Employees, you will race for trendy new Design cards, buy fabric and materials from different sources (always looking for the best quality and price), arrange financing at the Bank, and make use of other locations as you prepare for the next Show round.
During the Show round, each player presents their Collection, the culmination of their efforts for the previous two rounds. It’s the heart of the game, the event that separates the winners from the losers.
During each show, Collections are judged in four different categories (Trendy, Quality, etc.). Each award raises your company’s Prestige and, what’s more, allows you to sell your Collection for a much higher price.
Want to try before you buy? Of course you do! All you need to do is download Tabletop Simulator from Steam and search in the TTS workshop for "Pret a Porter Third Edition" and click subscribe!
We asked your favorite reviewers to take a look at the new edition of Pret-a-Porter. Some of them had a chance to play the original edition back then in 2011, for some of them, it was the first chance to discover the world of fashion.
We are happy to confirm that at the start of the campaign we will present you five videos recorded by those who know all about fashion and all about games.
Player order variant - Advanced
In standard gameplay, the First Player token is passed to the player on the left after each Working round. In the advanced variant, the First player token is gained after each Show by the player with the least Cash.
Contract cards last longer in the new edition. In the previous edition, each Contract was discarded after the Show round. In the new edition, at the end of the Show round, each Contract card is flipped to the other (weaker) side, or discarded if it was already flipped. This change makes a Contract strategy stronger and much more interesting.
Refreshed Victory Point System
The game now has a Victory Points track on the board to show clearly where everyone stands. In the previous version, players were receiving end game Cash (yellow money) with both positive and negative values. With the addition of the new track, and the removal of Victory Point penalties and ‘yellow money’ tokens, the game is plays more smoothly and is far less fiddly.
New rule - Bankruptcy. If a player can't pay off their Credits and/or Loans, they will be forced to take more Loans, which they will have to pay for every round, and pay off (if able) during the next Show round. This may lead to Bankruptcy at the end of the game if a player is unable to pay off all their outstanding Credits and Loans after the Final Show round.
Starting design cards for variable setup
At the start of the game, each player receives a Clothing Type token which, in addition to showing which Type they specialize in, lists 2 Design cards. These pre-constructed starting Design cards make set up more balanced and smoother than in the previous edition.
In the new edition, we have added icons to the round track representing each phase of the game to remind players what they should resolve at each moment of the game. It shows not only the round number, but also the current phase of the game.
In the new edition, we changed the icons depicting abilities on cards into text explanations of the card abilities. We also created a Card Almanac document with additional explanations and examples, when necessary.
In the previous edition, all information about Victory Points and Show awards were listed on the board. We decided that the board was already too crowded, and moved this information to separate player aids.
We eliminated Victory Points tokens in the new edition and added a Scoring track on the board instead. It makes the game less fiddly.
Fashion show section
There is now a designated space on the board for the Fashion Show tiles. By clever design, it allows the players to immediately grasp which Features are judged in specific rounds.
And many, many more small changes!
We have improved every single component of the game!
- Mini american-sized cards for Contracts, Buildings and Employees were changed to standard-sized cards.
- Mini american-sized cards for Shows were changed to cardboard tiles.
- Board size was changed from 460x460 mm to 670x470 mm.
- All tokens in the game (Cash, Trends, PR, Quality etc.) are bigger.
- Wooden cubes for fabric are changed into custom wooden pieces.
- Cardboard tokens for Upkeep cost were changed from cardboard to wood discs with stickers.
- Cardboard Round tracker was changed to a wood Round tracker,
- Additionally, the Kickstarter edition will differ depending on which Stretch goals are unlocked!
Prêt-à-Porter is an economic game with direct interaction. During fashion shows (scoring rounds) players compete for awards that gain them both immediate cash and long term victory points. At these points, the game is ruthless and it can be disheartening when your opponents dominate a fashion show. Prêt-à-Porter simulates running a company in a crowded space, with competitors fighting for limited customers and market shares.
Prêt-à-Porter is tight. It is a perfect example of a short-blanket euro game, with players have many choices but few rounds in which to execute their plans. With only six actions before each show, players must find a balance between long term goals (hiring employees, signing new contracts, etc.) and short time goals (creating a design collection for an upcoming fashion show). There are always many more things to do than time to do them in!
Prêt-à-Porter is known for being one of the most thematic games in the heavy euro games genre. Designed by Ignacy Trzewiczek, who is known for his highly story-driven titles like Robinson Crusoe, or Detective, Prêt-à-Porter is a tense economic game which puts you in the shoes of a manager in the fashion industry: hiring employees, designing and producing clothing collections, and frantically preparing for high-stakes fashion shows!
Prêt-à-Porter is a rather short game compared to other big and heavy euro games. One game can be easily played in 90 minutes if all players know the rules. The game plays over 12 rounds in which 8 rounds are action rounds, and 4 are scoring rounds.
Prêt-à-Porter is a heavy economic game, and that means it involves some math! You must calculate upkeep costs for your company; you must calculate expected revenue from the collections you sell, and balance that against the cost of the materials you are buying to produce the clothing. If the phrase "12+17" makes you feel unhappy, Prêt-à-Porter might be not the game for you.
Prêt-à-Porter is an economic game with a strong interaction. Unlike many economic games, the game has no solo variant and cannot be played without an opponent to challenge you during the fashion shows. The game is all about competing with other players for limited resources and rewards.
Prêt-à-Porter has a very tight economy. You must keep your upkeep costs in mind; you must carefully manage your expenses and investments, and the room for error is small. It is easy to fall in love with the buildings and employees abilities and overinvest in them - bankruptcy is a real possibility!
We've received numerous questions about Pledge Manager and if there will be a possibility to acquire any other Portal Games products through it. We've considered it thoroughly, and we're happy to let you know that part of our catalog will be available in Pledge Manager to add it to your Prêt-è-Porter pledge.
Keep in mind that you won't have to wait long for all of them - with an established delivery for October 2019, you will be able to enjoy all of these games in about three months. Just keep in mind, that with any game(s) added in the Pledge Manager the final Shipping Cost will differ from the costs presented in the table below. Pledge Manager will automatically calculate your actual shipping costs.
Additionally in the Pledge Manager you will be able to choose a language edition - currently we have English, Polish, German, Spanish fully translated editions confirmed.
Here at Portal Games, we have a great experience both in production and delivery. We’ve been making high-quality games and delivering them all over the world for many years.
This Kickstarter is not like a traditional campaign - we are fully focused on delivery of the games to all backers in October 2019! To make it possible, every game will be air shipped from Poland directly to every customer. We cannot use the fullfillment centers (these would in fact increase the shipping costs in this case), but we do offer a two copies shipping to reduce the shipping cost per game. Since we’re from Poland and our friends from Maldito Games are responsible for translation and release of the Spanish edition, we have great offers for our domestic shipping, but we hope that all of you find our offer appealing. These costs are still estimates, and they may rise slightly, depending on the weight of the final product with all stretch goals.
We will be charging these costs based on the actual cost of shipping, and collect it through the pledge manager after the campaign ends.
If you have any doubts what is the estimated shipping cost to your country, please check the detailed list here.
If you have any questions about this campaign, please contact us at portal(at)portalgames.pl
Though this campaign does not have a retailer pledge, there will be a single print run of the game available to distribution.
To secure this one and only chance to see Prêt-à-Porter in your store, please contact us at luke(at)portalgamesus.com for North America retailers and marcin.dudek(at)portalgames.pl for all other.
Please note, the distribution edition of the game will not contain Kickstarter exclusives.
Risks and challenges
Portal Games has been present on the market since 1999. Over these years, the company has successfully published more than 200 games and expansions!
Though the company has been around for 20 years, this is our first time being on Kickstarter. Our team of industry veterans has tremendous experience and is extremely excited to expand inonto this platform!
Even so, we’ve done our research and we’re aware that one of the main risks of every Kickstarter project is the risk of possible delays. These may be caused by many different factors, such as production, shipping and customs. The game and all components will be produced in Poland, so it will not have to travel halfway around the world before being shiped to backers. Due to the logistics of international shipping, backers in different regions of the world may receive their rewards sooner than others.
We’ve done our best to minimize those risks as much as possible, and we will be more than happy to refund you if, for any unforeseen reasons, we are unable to deliver the game to you. With that being said, we’ve been successfully delivering games all over the world for years, and do not expect to encounter such an extreme situation.
Please note that even though the game is 90% finished, this is not a pre-order and the final product might change slightly. We are fully devoted to creating an amazing experience during your game nights and you can trust us that every choice we make will only be aimed at improving the standard of the final product.
As mentioned previously, the game and all components will be produced in Poland, to the high quality standards that we hold for any of our games.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
