Greetings Fellow Avatars!

More cool stuff to share with you this update, including Geoff Mellon's revamping of the male avatar outfit, Bren Wilson putting some moves on the avatar attacks, the Edelmann House Poll, Tracy Hickman's awesome Sojourner Tales Kickstarter campaign, and changes to how project updates are being shared.

Avatars in Motion

Bren Wilson (animator) has been hard at work adding more animations to our latest male avatar! Here is a video of his new axe attack animation:

SotA Male Avatar Axe Attack Video

And here is the bow attack animation:

Male Avatar Revamp

Geoff Mellon (character artist), has a great thread in our Dev+ forums where he discusses his revamping of the male avatar and leather outfit. Here are some excerpts:

Geoff (Qball): This discussion is...to readdress the Male Avatar demo Clothes. I built those for speed and since we have been designing the Customization System [i.e. what parts of the avatars are interchangeable] we have stripped the Male Avatar down to his leather vest and such. Well I finally got the time to revisit the leathers and this thread will be step by step of my process...This is what I had to start with, the vest needs life and I intend to give it some.

[Note: Yes, his forearms are too long. Several community members brought it to our attention]

MRCalderon3D: Great job Qball, but I think that the forearm is too long. I made a copy Avatar's arm and I turned it from the shoulder. I have placed a reference to the proportions of the human body...

Geoff: ...thanks for all the feedback folks. I see the forearm issue...with this leather I wanted to be able to have color control over different parts of the vest. After working in 3ds Max, I go into Zbrush and sculpt in detail. So for Day 2, I mostly was doing this sculpting.

Geoff: Here is the final version of the paint from Zbrush. It makes the very strong foundation but is by no means the last time I will be painting. These textures in PhotoShop will be much more controllable and tight to work on.

Geoff: Below you can see some of the detail painting I look to do when working in Zbrush. I can enhance all the painting with a sharp brush with carving inside of the leather. And as much as I would love this little piece of leather to show all this detail in game, I am sure it will be lost as the maps get shrunk. But it was fun, I love painting leather and chrome...so yay!

Cloth Armor!

Geoff Mellon took a short break from his 3D modeling tasks to crank out a couple of concept pieces for additional male avatar outfits. Geoff will start modeling these soon so look for in-game version of these outfits in the weeks ahead!

Ya know, Geoff sits right next to senior programmer Justin Gilbert, who wears a hoodie every day, all day. I'm thinking Justin was the inspiration for Geoff's Epic Cloth Armor concept art. What do you think:

The Edelmann House Poll

The rewards for the Edelmann Pledge Tier included "Unique, upscale, German Benefactor/Founder Edelmann's home (German home styles to be submitted and voted on by community; available only to pre-launch backers)"

Bob Cooksey (senior environmental artist) has generated his recommendation for an Edelmann home, and you can vote on his version, or alternate versions, at the Edelmann House Poll thread in our forums.

Tracy & Laura Hickman's Sojourner Tales Kickstarter Campaign

All of us on the SotA dev team love great board games, and we love them even more when they're developed by one of our own team members! We even had an epic board game room set up during our Kickstarter all-nighter, and have spent many lunch hours together shuffling cards and moving tokens in the conference room! So of course we were all excited when Master Storytellers Tracy and Laura Hickman announced their Kickstarter Project: Sojourner Tales.

Sojourner Tales is a story based strategy game where players will have to use their wits as they discover and collect the pieces of a mysterious puzzle and try to be the first to complete the epic adventure. And because of the innovative Ebook Story Modules and adaptable design, the tale is different every time you play! So if you love great board games like we do, be sure to check out the Hickman’s Kickstarter page before funding closes on Oct 10, 2013.

Project Updates Transitioning to SotA Website and Emails!

Since we completed our Kickstarter campaign on April 7, 2013, we have been double-posting our project updates to both Kickstarter and the SotA project website. To help consolidate our communications with our community of backers, we will start posting the updates only on the SotA website, but we will continue to send an email version of the updates to all of our Kickstarter backers using the email addresses provided to us by Kickstarter.  This way we can consolidate all of your replies and comments to our updates in one place.

We're currently using MailChimp as our email distribution platform, so keep an eye out for our future emailed updates. You should continue to receive these email updates even if you haven't yet registered on the SotA website. If you don't see them, then make sure your spam filters aren't blocking them from your inbox!

Please Register on SotA and Link Your Kickstarter Account!

Stay on top of all the latest game development news by registering on our website, https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com. And if you have not already done so, please be sure to Link your Kickstarter Account, so we can ensure that you receive all of your backer rewards as soon as they are ready to roll out!

Please reconsider your decision to stop updating on Kickstarter.com. This is the medium I backed through, and this is the medium I prefer my updates be delivered to.

Don't want it, Tealus? Don't buy it. I gave my money and won't give more. No problem.

Really Blake Cross? You love the fact that they're creating more stuff to be sold in their "store" with the money they raise. I guess you didn't get the email about another special house that can only be yours if you give them more money.

I for one, wish I never back this project.

What I love about the folks that are creating this game is that they hold themselves accountable. Constant updates and what they're doing with our money and terrific detail on the progress of their project. Bravo to the creators. I feel very comfortable knowing how dedicated you are to this.

@Alex if you have backed several kickstarter projects, you don't want to hunt for every update. Thats what the kickstarter web site is for. Also when I compare the activity many other peoples are seeing it the same way. Here are more comments then on the shrould website. The reason of that could also be that this forum here is not moderated, where as the people from the shrould web site decides which postings are displayed or not.

I don't mind if on the shrould web site there is more information, but I expect to see a regular status report of the project here on kickstarter. Weekly would be great, every second week would be good, once a month would be (in my eyes) the barest minimum.

I really don't get all the complainers about not updating on kickstarter - it's not like kickstarter has an awesome setup for community interaction or anything. The forum software on sota is much better, it's not a big deal to go over there and engage if you want to.

    7. Missing_small

Creator MBybee on September 13, 2013

So now they've moved updates off to their own barely useful forums - and the begathon continues.
I am seriously done with kickstarting these projects.

We are still going to receive update by email, so nothing to complain about IMO.

    9. Smile.small

      Creator J. LeBlanc on September 12, 2013

I agree with the others. I have no wish to get my updates for a kickstarter sponsored project on another site. I have backed 280 projects. I REFUSE to go to 280 individual websites because they find it hard to copy and paste an update from one website to another.

If I can't trust you to copy and paste an update, how in hades can I trust you to build a pc game?

If I can't trust you to support me here, where it all started and give me the simple courtesy of an update once in a while how am I supposed to trust you to support me in game when I have a problem?

      Ugh, Frustration.

@Asmodeus2012, What Roger said. Except I have backed 50 projects this year, with a total of 162 successful projects over 3 different funding sites. Keeping up with the ones that have not delivered their rewards yet (86 so far, 45 of them late) is quite challenging, even with my spreadsheet and all but 6 of them being here on Kickstarter. I do try and add in the websites of projects like this one, but having all of the information go through their website would make things really hard. Since they will continue to send updates to my Kickstarter address, it will be easier to transition, but it is still not the same as having things in one place.

    11. Cwolf.small

Creator Roger van Velzen on September 12, 2013

@Asmodeus2012 as of this time I have backed 41 projects. The majority of these projects have started their own websites. So I have to juggle about 30 or so website every week to try and get the info I would like to see on all these projects. This can be a pain in the ass to say the least.

I have no issues with companies migrating to their own website for closer interaction with backers but for people like me who may not have the time to juggle the load of website it can be nice to have all 'major' updates sent via Kickstarter,

I have come to a point now that am having issues remembering all my logins and passwords since i dont want to use the same password for all sites as that would be a security issue waiting to happen. :)

    12. Missing_small

      Creator Asmodeus2012 on September 12, 2013

I seriously don't understand why people have to complain and cry because a project they supported and which was successfully funded, now continues development in its own dedicated environment. The project is financed, the kickstarting phase is over! Successful projects have to start their own new life somewhere, it's just common sense. Is it really such a big deal to visit a backed project's dedicated website? There are so many interesting new things to discover, so many more ways to interact constructively with the developers. It does seem to me, if this is too much to handle for anyone, they show that they really could'nt care less about the project, and I find it rather difficult to see why they backed in the first place. Kickstarter is a great financing tool, but it's certainly not the best project development or communications platform.

Could you please provide some RSS/Atom feed for the updates on the SotA site, so people using any feed aggregator could subscribe to it and aggregate their updates that way? If there already exists a feed neither me nor Feedly were able to find it.

@Gary Wattson, while I appreciate the ease of use the kickstarter site provides I don't think this interface was made to be used for years on end while long term projects take shape.

It's excellent for short updates and "packages are out" messages but in the long term you are going to have to migrate to the site of the game itself.
It is only logical that they'll want to start with getting their customers to the hub of their activities in stead of the fringes. They'll want you to play and participate in the community (which will be found on their site/forums/hub). Especially since part of the gameplay is MMORPG-like.

This being said, I like the update and I should check our your website myself I guess...

By leaving kickstarter to "consolidate replies" you make it harder for your backers to consolidate the amount of websites they need to visit. I hate it when projects try to get you off kckstarter, especially when 90% of them only want you off kickstarter so they can get even more money out of you (yes, we know, there is a great SOTA shop at your site and we can upgrade our packages there) I back something like 15 projects on kickstarter, no way I'd visit 15 sites for random updates. If this is your last kickstarter update then see ya after the game is released.
