Update 18: Tech Talk and Exciting Announcements!

Terrain Tech and Weather

One of our goals is to get content out to the players fast! That means more frequent content updates, new lands to explore, new trade routes, new adventure! So we strove to implement tech that allows us to create content more quickly and efficiently integrated into the game. An example of the tech can be seen in both our Terrain and Weather systems.

Warning! Tech-speak ahead...

Let's start by talking about Terrain. As you know, we are working with a hex style map. One of the things we've done to streamline content development is to assign hexes with terrain presets, such as swamps, forests or mountains. Each terrain type can then be assigned primary characteristics such as height maps, textures, basic physics, which allows for simplified world building. In addition, the hexes are also meshed to give them a certain unique look and feel. These hex presets allow engineers to take what the designers want and easily translate it into the game world. Whether we want to add an ancient, forgotten desert to explore, or remote island ruins filled with treasures and peril, this tech allows us to change one tile and change the world!

We also want to focus on maximizing player performance as well, and have developed several systems to optimize data flow. Overall, hexes will be processed in 3 x 3 chunks for basic rendering, and only the data currently onscreen is processed. Behind the screen, we will be utilizing two different styles of GPU acceleration, which will automatically adapt based on your hardware specs to ensure the best possible performance while allowing for breathtaking visual impact.

A great example of this tech in action is our new Weather system, which we were able to implement partly because of these presets. We want the weather to look and feel real, while also having a meaningful impact on the player. Our weather will be simulated to not only look realistic, but to provide for evolving weather patterns that influence other aspects of the game. Weather, along with the day and night cycle, will be an important part of each scene. For example, perhaps a player can only approach a secured location under the cover of darkness, or maybe there is a rare herb that can only be gathered during a thunderous rainstorm.

We want to hear your thoughts on how weather can be used in-game to create a more meaningful experience for players. Please leave us your feedback on the Shroud of the Avatar Forums in our special Weather thread.

what are the(projected) system requirements for this game?

    2. Creator Mark Indiveri on April 1, 2013

"Weather" was a big "immersion" factor in Skyrim. Bang on.

Pledge upgraded to "Citizen". I hope I won't have too much trouble placing and enjoying my "Village Level" house. I am soooooo NOT doing a "frantic land-grab". Nuh uh. No way. I don't even have tiny clue what the heck will be going on...

    3. Creator T.J. Brumfield on April 1, 2013

An in-game currency upkeep for property assures that players who do play the game online don't find all the spots in town taken up by absentee players who stopped playing.

However, I hope the upkeep is nominal and that the game doesn't require constant grinding just to keep property.

I don't think I want to explore ancient desserts.

They'll probably be stale and moldy after so many years of exposure to the elements...

    5. Creator ☆Dame Lori☆ on April 1, 2013

I'm sorry, but the more people like Bernie that leave, the nicer the game will be for the rest of us. :)

    6. Creator ND3G on April 1, 2013

I love how people like Bernie below try to put a spin on everything. A rent free house is a special one-time reward for those backing this KS, you know so the game can be made (which is the real reward any ways). If this project or the rewards being offered in return for your support are not to your liking that my all means do not support it. But please don't even bother telling us how insulted you are because no one here even remotely cares.

    7. Creator Rob Vickery on April 1, 2013

You only pay for the game with real money. If you want a house you buy one with in game gold and maintain it with in game gold. The only other time you will need to spend real money is if you choose to buy one of the expansion packs.

    8. Creator Alexspeed on April 1, 2013

Thx for upgrading the website, pledge upgraded =)

    9. Creator Portalarium, Inc. on April 1, 2013

@BradleyUffner & Dias Blackwing ~ You can submit your questions on G+ as well as on Twitter. :) I will be monitoring #LBSotA_Hangout on both sites. ~FireLotus

    10. Creator ☆Lord Kei☆ - Virtuous Lord on April 1, 2013

Please allow us to post question via G+ instead of Twitter

    11. Creator Raging Robot on April 1, 2013

That brings up a very good point: If we are only ROYAL ARTISAN pledgers and this is a solo non-monthly paying game, are we suppose to pay extra actual money to buy or rent a house? Isn't this in the game somehow where we get to do things to earn money and buy or rent a houes? Or am I wrong on this question?

    12. Creator Bernie Bresnahan on March 31, 2013

Having thought about it. I'm out. You're collecting monies to get your game off the ground. I don't feel that people backing your project should have to pony up $500 to avoid paying housing maintenance. I personally find it insulting. Good luck, so long, farewell.

    13. Creator BradleyUffner on March 31, 2013

I find it ironic that questions for the G+ hangout have to be submitted via Twitter :)
You should also check that hashtag on Google+

    14. Creator ND3G on March 31, 2013

Looks good guys! I always love a good storm. I think your work is going to go a long way towards making a realistic and interesting world to play in.

    15. Creator Portalarium, Inc. on March 31, 2013

Yes, of course. But we also want to spread the word to as many people as possible via Twitter! ~FireLotus

    16. Creator Grayhawk on March 31, 2013

Happy Easter! Nice Update, I'll try to understand the tech-speak tomorrow morning (it's after midnight here in Germany) :P.

    17. Creator Lars Ivar | AoUA on March 31, 2013

May I suggest that it is also possible to ask questions on G+ via the #LBSotA_Hangout? I mean, since it is a Google+ hangout ...

    18. Creator Richard James Lemon on March 31, 2013

And don't forget the Happy Easter too All post :P
