Popular Noise is a quarterly lifestyle magazine for the music community, featuring the best in art, fashion, and popular culture.

The hardest part is getting started.

Making this magazine has long been a dream of mine, I'm not sure where to begin counting. I've been talking about it for years. Maybe it started in a wine soaked conversation around my kitchen table with my roommates after a hard day. Maybe it started when I was first learning about photography and editorial design as an intern (and later Art Director) at Visionaire, V Magazine, and Vman. Might have been when I was working on a new fashion start up (Anja Rubik's '25') and decided the world didn't need another fashion mag nearly as much as it needed a music mag. It's possible it began even earlier than that when I was a design student at Parsons, arguing with my teachers because they thought my screen printed 'zine about synthesizers didn't fit the assignment, but I just said fuck it and did it anyway. Whatever the case may be, for the last year I've taken those years of rumination and turned them into something very real. And hopefully soon, with your help, something that we can hold in our hands and enjoy.

But I didn't do it alone. I brought with me some of the most talented image makers from my experience working in the fashion and luxury world. They helped me to elevate the level of craft in this magazine beyond what anyone else in music publishing is doing now. I brought with me my network of writers, from my experience in the world of music, many of which are musicians themselves. They bring a point of view; a menagerie of insights and topics that go far beyond the typical. It's a unique combination of talents that you will not find anywhere else.

Everyone has contributed something amazing to this project, but being the creative geniuses that we are, we're lacking one thing: money. Each person who has contributed to this magazine has done it out of passion and devoted their time, and occasionally their own money, to make it happen. All we need now is the money to print and distribute it. So that's why were here. All my contributors are counting on me to get this done and I am in turn counting on you. So please read on about what we have in store in the first issue and what you'll be getting in return for supporting us.

Popular Noise is a magazine about everything but the music.

Popular Noise is a magazine about life and style; places, people, and moments. All the things that go into a life worth making music about, and an exploration of how one gets from here (life) to there (music). Popular Noise is unique because it fills a gap in the media landscape. Popular Noise brings a new voice and vision to the collective conversation about music and the life that surrounds it that is as fresh as it is informed. It’s about the way we think and talk about music. It’s about empowering music fans with knowledge to think and talk about it themselves. It’s about taking a moment to reflect back on the cacophony of sounds, styles, and genres and what it all means NOW. It’s about throwing out everything we know about how one SHOULD make a music magazine and speak to the world of today and tomorrow. It’s about reevaluating the need to write about music at all.

Popular Noise is the new blueprint for how music should look.

Popular Noise is a lot of fun and always stylish. It can be visually dense at times, spare and minimal at others, but will always be driven by a conceptual approach to visually representing content. Popular Noise collaborates with some of the worlds best photographers, illustrators, and image makers to create a slick and seamless magazine with the highest production quality. Contributors include photographers Chito Yoshida, Spencer Higgins, Hannah Whitaker, Kyle Johnson, Yudi Echevarria and Kathy Lo; illustrators Ben Bertocci, Christophe Szpajdel, Mark Riddick, and Merlin Mannelly. By leveraging this unique network of image makers from the world of music, fashion, and luxury branding, Popular Noise brings the reader a level of craft and thoughtfulness to representing the world of music like no one else in music publishing today. It’s the new blueprint for how music should look.

Popular Noise is the sound from the inside.

Popular Noise has a point of view. Equal parts high and low culture, it speaks to the reader from a depth of knowledge and nuance, but never takes itself too seriously. It’s about sharing not showing off. Popular Noise isn’t afraid of taking chances or an unpopular opinion. It’s snarky and irreverent but always gives you a wink to let you know you’re in on the joke. It isn’t afraid to call bullshit, hug a little too long, or pour its heart out. It’s insider and behind the scenes. Popular Noise is not EXclusive, It’s INclusive. This unique point of view comes from our approach to our content; we don’t talk about the artists, we give them a voice. By putting the musician in the writers seat we always get the inside view. Contributors include Katie Hegarty, Zach Lipez, Ryann Donnelly, Jayson Green, Sadek Bazaara, Sam Tobin, Emma Kadar-Penner Green, and Khira Jordan.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Creating an entire magazine from scratch is a tremendous challenge for anyone, especially in todays tenuous economic climate. Getting anyone to do anything with zero budget is a challenge, to get it done at a high level and on time is just about impossible. BUT, throughout my personal experience of working at V Magazine, Vman, and also through the redesign of a major Hearst publication I've developed a network of collaborators who are smart, talented, and professional. Everyone knows that this is a labor of love and that we're all in it together to try to make Popular Noise the best that it can be. The biggest challenge is to get the content to meet our own high standards. The way to overcome it is hard work and lots of it, but luckily for us its work that we love to do and the harder the better!

FAQ

  • Well, there are a lot of factors involved. Paper quality, size, quantity, etc but the numbers I'm looking at are ranging from about $13,000 to $18,000.

  • There is also a need to let people know that the magazine exists. So we'll need to spend a little bit on PR and marketing. Also, shipping is very expensive. We'll need to ship the magazines from the printer to the distributor who will then send issues out to stores like Barnes & Noble and other newsstands.

  • If there is any extra money left over after what I described above I'd love to be able to pay our contributors a little something for their time, or at very least, throw them an awesome party. Maybe if you contribute, you can come too!
