About The Pop Up Art Book
The idea behind this group book is to represent a wide range of contemporary art styles in an exciting new pop up format, and our ultimate goal is to get this book in as many of your hands as possible. After creating and self-publishing our first book, Pop Up Funk with artist Jim Mahfood in 2013, we reached out to other artists with the same simple concept: to take their art apart and then re-construct it as a three-dimensional pop-up spread.
Making A Pop Up Book
Working closely with each artist, we picked out the best artwork that we thought would lend itself well to a pop up, and then worked on digitally cutting out each piece of art as well as the corresponding paper engineering required to make it work as a functional pop up spread.
Some pages required the artists to fill in elements that were not in the original art but needed to be there to make the art pop. For example, many of the elements in Junko Mizuno's Pancakes art were edited and redrawn for the pop up version. The new artwork creates a new version of each piece of art that is entirely unique to our book and this project!
Why We Need Your Help
With our first book, each of the 100 copies we made were printed, digitally-cut, hand-assembled and bound by two of us here in West Palm Beach, FL. The entire process took us a little over a year. This is about how long we've been working on designing the pages for The Pop Up Art Book.
Making a pop-up book is very time consuming, and it can take many revisions to get just one page to work just right. But designing the book is only half of the work (or less!). Get this: all pop-up books are assembled entirely by hand which means each copy of every pop-up book ever produced is handmade, piece-by-piece, page-by-page. So in order for us to get the book in as many hands as possible we need to outsource the assembly aspect of the book, which is why we're here on Kickstarter!
This is why we are looking for your help - to raise enough money to get a run of The Pop Up Art Book produced in a professional pop up factory. It would take us the better part of a year to produce just a few hundred books ourselves, while if we get them produced at a factory that entire process will be done by a team that can churn out books much more quickly and efficiently than we could ever do ourselves.
Artist Edition Books
In addition to the six pages included in the standard edition, we're also creating one Special Artist Edition book which will include an additional pop-up page with each artist. There will only be 10 copies of each Artist Edition made, and each one will have the artist's signature and a special edition cover and binding. These books will be 100% handmade in the USA, by us.
Cover Art & Book Design
The cover artwork and book design for The Pop Up Art Book is being done by graphic designer Kevin Steele, a fellow member of the Movable Book Society that we met at this year's conference. We're stoked to have his excellent design skills on board to help us. Designs will be updated here and on the popupartbook.com website as they are approved.
This isn't our first pop up book!

Risks and challenges
Mass producing a pop up book is something that only a few factories in the world can properly handle. Thanks to a handful of professional paper engineers that have offered us a lot guidance and advice over the past two years, we've been referred to a few pop up book factories we've been speaking with about getting this book produced.
We currently have mockup books out at two factories and are finalizing paper use and glue point pricing with both. Tentative production dates are set for Late March/Early April, with a roughly one month turnaround time. Shipping should take approx 2-4 weeks (we'll be using Air Mail) and we expect to begin shipping out the books in Late April/May.
We will be getting three white mockups and three color mockups of the book sent prior to mass production, so any printing/assembly/engineering issues will be solved prior to approval of the final color mockups.
We'll update both this Kickstarter page as well as the PopUpArtBook.com website with pictures and detailed info as it comes.
Therefore, the greatest risk with the project is production of the books and timing of when they will arrive stateside for shipping.
Also, all 60 of the Artist Edition books that are available will be hand made here in South Florida, and we'll be starting on production with those at the start of the year. These will take us approximately 6-8 weeks to assemble and bind and we'll begin shipping them out as they are finished.
