The First After-Delay-News Update!

Hello everyone! It's been over a month since our last update where we finally unveiled the material miniatures will be produced in and discussed our delay. For us it's been intense! Long 18-hour days, constant play testing groups, copy editing and pushing ourselves to further tweak and refine every aspect of the project.

Initially I had planned on keeping everyone up to date with smaller weekly updates, but there wasn't anything significant to share and I really don't want to spam peoples inboxes! This will shift in the upcoming months as milestones are reached and there's more to share. Things definitely aren't quite but we're working through a big stretch which will yield lots of news soon.

Production Update
We've had a pretty big change in the workflow. Originally, I was delivering files and resin masters to the factory and they were responsible for fully preparing the parts for plastic production. However, once production started and we spent countless hours going back and forth over details, we decided it would be best to make a major shift. The KDM project has now invested a significant chunk into a special software license so that I can personally review and tweak miniatures with the KD sculpting team before they are committed to production. The new workflow gives myself and our artists much greater quality control.

Here is an image showing some of the armor kit mastering, its a long detailed oriented process me and the KD team is now handling.

Then the talented engineers can focus on what they do best, which is preparing the figures for molding. This part of the process is very much like a puzzle, since with hard plastic molds there is no tolerance for undercuts at all. In some cases details need to be changed to meet the requirements of the draft angle and make production a reality.

Graphical Evolution
Anna is gonna kill me If I keep upgrading designs… but so long as there is time I just can't help myself! You can see here the mood / trait cards are now much easier to identify.

Effects of the Delay!

Upgraded Tokens - Originally the positive and negative attribute tokens had a simple text design. Since there's time Lokman illustrated a unique piece of art that embodies each attribute! I don't wanna spoil them all, so here are a couple of em.

Monster Crests - Here are some of the other monster Crests that the delay allowed us to include!

Mask Miniatures for the Core Game -  Hector has wrapped up all the masks and they will now be included in the core game as a big thanks to everyone. There will be one of each in the core set, not exactly sure which sprue they will end up on yet tho.

Lion Knight Expansion Upgrade - Just another little detail the delay has allowed us to include, The Lion Knight expansion will now include a male and female armor kit compatible head and corresponding holy mask gear card.

Core game rulebook upgrades - We've added a section to the rulebook that talks about KDM's unique game play concepts. I loved this section… so we went back in and added more art to it! We also fleshed out a few more things and are up to oh… 40ish story events? This means the rulebook is pushing around 140+ pages now!


Quick Playtest Highlights

- Survivor spends 13 survival points in a single turn, attempting to flurry the Butcher to death. On the very last attack, his axe breaks and the Butcher ends up wiping the party a few rounds later. 

- A Lvl 2 lion seemed to have an affinity for pulling the legs off its victims! Two dismembered legs later, it faced down its final target, a dual katar wielding survivor that managed to hold out and bring it down to its last 2 wounds before dying heroically. 

 - A settlement reduced to a single person decided to play it out, luckily they drew "Stranger in the Dark", which increased their population by one! This boon however, was met with instant tragedy as one of the two survivors discovered that the lanterns could be used to produce heat and badly burned their body! Mistaken for a flesh monster, the survivor was banished… reducing the population to 1 again! 

- Hunting party critically injures an antelope causing it to constantly vomit blood from its large under maw. The effect of this is actually good, it gives bonus insanity to every survivor it passes over (vomiting blood on them of course) and due to the way the AI cards landed, it ended up running over the group several times before they broke out of its combo! Now officially the insane-est party to date.

Worldwide Shipping Stuff 
No update yet and there will not be a firm update until we know the exact dimensions and weight of every package. We do not and cannot be expected to control the policies of every unique region and we must meet certain legal requirements to protect ourselves. Once we have isolated the exact fulfillment procedure that we will be using, we will let everyone know. Until then, all I can do is assure you were are exploring every option that comes our way.

Finally, to answer a recurring question.
KDM hired a professional copy editor and no, she doesn't check these updates (she might die after reading one). She's busy checking hundreds and hundreds of cards.

This Armor Kit mastering image came in while I was writing the update. It shows one of the many methods we are using to check all the sockets with as much scrutiny as possible.

Dragon KIng!?
I think the Dragon King is the most asked about expansion. I do very much like him, but he is not my personal favorite. (I just don't understand why the Dung Beetle Knight isn't everyones favorite like mine! ) Anyway, his sculpt... honestly? I am just not fully satisfied with it. This Dragon has had quite the legacy and I will share the whole story once I do have a version I am totally in love with and feel GREAT committing the huge amount of resources such a large kit will require. But until then, until I have something I am totally proud of to share. He will remain out of the spotlight. 

I actually had Danny Cruz do a little art pass and we are incorporating some of his vision into the new final. Which I will share when its ready.

      Thank you Adam for our dose of KD crack :-)

      Lots of good things, like all the extras you are throwing in the box. The monsters' crests are definitely a good idea, my favourite so far is the manhunter's one. The accuracy token looks great as well.

      It's nice to see some possible combinations of armour sets and it makes me eager to find the best configuration (the one that'll look the coolest!)

      I'm very puzzled by the Danny Cruz art, that lizardman is very disturbing yet it promises great things to see.

      About the Dragon King : I'm one of the people who asked for updates on him, and though you didn't provide any picture for now, it's good to see he's not forgotten and that you are taking great care to have him look true to your vision. I guess the artwork previewed during the kickstarter is what you envisioned for him.
      Another reason is that I'd like to see what a dragon would look like in the KD universe. Phoenix, lion and antelope are good examples of that warped vision of things.

      Anyway, the dung beetle knight is one of my favourite model too, just the name makes it already awesome :-p

      And finally thanks for sharing the resin version of the sunstalker dancer, the model is gorgeous, and again for me resin is showing its true potential vs plastic.

      Further to the "playing blind" idea:

      Players can only communicate by pointing and gesturing until language is developed, for example. Picture language, you can draw ideas and plans to aid your gesturing. Basic spoken language, you have to talk like cavemen. "Man hit lion with rock on bum"
      Also you have to do all your planning before you come into contact with the creature whilst in the hunt phase. If you ask or tell someone to do something during the fight phase then it counts as an action.

      What do you guys think?

      Awesome to hear about monster levels, though I am curious if there isn't some sort of power difference between, say, a white lion and a phoenix even at the same level or if they just require a rapidly different approach. I guess there might be a bit of fun in finding out, and I'm definitely with the folks who aren't going to look through the a.i. cards beforehand. Half the fun in this game seems to be watching things go spectacularly wrong and catch everyone off guard.

      @Balgin stondraeg -you have a great Idea. that makes the game much more like when one first plays like... D&D and fights his first idk cokatrice having no idea what it is and its threat! then as its powers afect the party and panic sets in as everyone trys to kill the unknown monster ect when you survive it is far more fullfilling via that choice type of game play. I am gunna play without looking at the monsters aswell man, great gamers game alike ;P

      oh man I'm so excited. I am going to paint everything in a monochrome greyscale and the only colour on the kits will be the gore,and anyplace the light from a lantern will cast light onto the aria of any kit I will paint that full colour... I think its pretty plane for a paint idea but I think it will fit the game consept well. Adam Ive been haunting your KD stuff for like 3 years or so(maby more?) and loved it when I would see it on Coolminiornot and thats how I found out about this project. I cant say how glad I am that I stumbled upon your work man. much gamer love and respect. -B

      David Rance: I, for one, will not be looking at the cards first. Clearly the monsters should be a savage and brutal surprise. Their behaviour will only be learned through interraction with them :).

      Every monster in KD:M is considered a "boss monster." Each monster has 3 levels, but lower levels are not worth as many resources. Being prepared, trying different gear load outs and weighing the pros and cons of hunting a more powerful threat for greater rewards is one of the great pleasures of the game.

      I share your sentiments, I'd like to see some more low level creatures. We have several bosses as well as post-final boss encounters, and there's probably a lot of creative opportunity for smaller monsters. Who knows though, it might be possible to fight larger monsters earlier than we think, but might require a lot of luck and knowledge of the creature.

      I did think about a few things though. I don't know how survival points work, but I assume they can be balanced between offense and defense, and since the monster's HP is their AI deck blowing all one's points first thing might have been a pretty terrible strategy. Doing so later might work as a finisher, but early on the creature has it's full AI deck so blowing through the full thing immediately is unlikely.

      I haven't heard this addressed before but forgive me if it's been mentioned. The game updates given so far have given the impression that this game will be very tough. That's good! I backed this project expecting it to be difficult, unforgiving, even unfair at times. So far, it seems to have all those things.

      But what concerns me is the stories about lions, antelopes, and butchers destroying entire parties. And in this update we see a settlement almost entirely wiped out to the point where I can only assume that settlement was completely destroyed soon after. Again, gameplaywise, this is everything I was hoping to hear. I would love for this to be a Dwarf Fortress style of game where you know you're going to lose, it's just a matter of when. But it has me thinking...

      I've backed the game for nearly all of the expansions. But if the game is this difficult at the low levels, I'm not sure I'll be able to get my settlement powerful enough to fight all those bosses I bought. Basically, it seems like there's a lot of very powerful monsters and not very many weak ones.

      I don't mind there being so many powerful things but if I'm going to have to grind weak monsters and start my settlement over after a few especially brutal losses, I can see myself getting quite tired of fighting antelopes and lions LONG before I tire of fighting Beetle Nights and Man Hunters.

      I would love to see some expansions in the (distant) future that add more basic monsters for the early game.

      And i will be using tiny amounts of superglue (opposed to plastic cement) to stick them together, that way i can carefully snao the pieces back apart if i have to.

      Pride265 just wrote what i was thinking. The models are there to look cool. Not having the exact loadout match between equipment from cards and my actual model doesn't bother me too much. Only if i get major upgrades (like a completely new set of armour)

      I am just going to have 2 of the 4 armor kits be "pure" armor kits and only use parts from that kit and then have fun kit bashing with the rest of them and just having cool looking models since truthfully it is more about the cards you have rather than what is on the model.

      Thanks, those of you who warned against magnetizing. I really do like the mix and match aspects, though, so I'm going to try John's suggestion of trying Blue-tack. Here's hoping that works well with the plastic!

      I plan on giving magnetizing a go. This game is so customisable that being able to creat unique heroes is part of the appeal.

      @KDM what's the platic going to be like on the minis? Will it be the level of the experiment of death or will it be improved? The experiment of death is great for plastic just curious.

      For magnetizing I prepared some youtube videos last xmas. Magnetizing is not for the beginners or those with unsteady hands. Be warned, as Adam said.

      Seriously. Adam you are improving the sets that I originally did not like as much and I'm good with all the alterations I am seeing.

      I do really hope this game will be a great success and there may be opportunity to get more of the armour sets sometime in the future.

      Just so you guys know, I cannot officially endorse magnetizing. It is for advanced hobbyists only. Rare earth magnets are not child or pet safe. Do not buy them. That disclaimer aside, I think the arms and waist would be easy to manage. If hands are glued to arms it would make the whole customization much easier, just a little less flexible in the end. I'll see what I can do about sneaking extra bits onto sprues. Once we go into sprue layout.

      @PY I would not suggest someone trying to magnetize for the first time to do it with these models. I have many of the pinups and as these are going to be on the same scale I would never do it myself on something this small and I have done this stuff before.

      If they are comparable to the other KDM sized models I would not suggest magnetizing everything. Their arms aren't as bulky as GW limbs. The joint at the waist will be easy though, as would the neck.

      Magntizing small hard plastic models is quite fine actually, I've done it plenty. Especially with Games Workshop quality plastic.

      Atro- The card specifically states "the Attacker" so it should apply only to the one player.

      Regarding the hit location card, maybe this is clarified in the rule book, but I don't see if the effects are seperate or related. I.E. Only players with 3+ understanding get +1 survival point or all players get +1 survival point and players with 3+ understanding can roleplay being thrilled?

      I mean intuitively I'd expect it's the first option (only players with 3+ understanding) but the way it's presented on the card is definitely ambiguous and might cause quite a few RAW vs RAI arguments at the game table.
