Quick Update!

Heya Guys,

Hard at work over here! Looks like I might be going to china real soon to visit some factories! I've also been learning a lot about dice making, what is and what isn't possible etc. I've spoken to Chessex, Koplow and a few places in china. Much greater detail is possible by doing silk screen printing on die but... I dunno. I really feel like they need to be engraved, which drastically changes what can and can't be done.

*Edit - I forgot to add this link to some painted starting survivors over on BOLS!

If anyone has any leads to interesting dice manufactures, please hit me up!

Allright, now some photos!

@Black Kestrel, that is indeed one of the places I will be visiting! I have still been chatting with Ed, trying to see what we can / can't do together. In an ideal world, WF would do the box and expansions and Ed and myself would tackle the promos and pinups.

      best of both worlds!

Since you mentioned touring factories I recently recieved my first batch of miniatures from the Dreamforge-Games Kickstarter as was blown away by the quality and detail of the plastic. DFG used Wargames Factory, as does Wyrd currently. I'd recommend reaching out to both of them. Also the Trollcast plastic from Ed Fortae is amazing stuff as well. Good luck with your manufacturer hunt.

    3. David Lee Seymour on February 15, 2013

@ KD LOL thats too funny. I can't picture anyone "smash-testing" you r resin minis tht way tho,

    4. Game-O-Gami on February 15, 2013

Was the Japanese goddess Amaterasu the inspiration for Sun Stalker Miko? She looks great!

    5. Kingdom Death 4-time creator on February 15, 2013

Its not the same resin that miniatures are made from!

    6. Edwardo on February 15, 2013

Have you tried smash them to the ground for durability testing?

    7. Kingdom Death 4-time creator on February 15, 2013

Ok, so here is a little dice update. The highest quality mass production friendly dice are engraved and made from a resin instead of a standard plastic. Panda Games did some nice ones for mice & mystics. I'll take some photos for the next update.

    8. K. Davis on February 14, 2013

I'll chime in as one more for engraved dice, loss of potential detail or no.

    9. Kevin "vCJD" on February 14, 2013

Np, few more items up now.

    10. Barabajagl on February 14, 2013

Thanks Kevin, I was able to manage to nab an Architect myself, now my pinup collection is currently up to date. The world is a good place. Now if only the swelling would go down in my hand so I can paint once again.

    11. Kevin "vCJD" on February 14, 2013

Was the a Great Game Hunter (pinup), they only had 10!

    12. Micheal B on February 14, 2013

YES !! I finally get my Architect pinup.!! woohoo!!

      So what was the other pinup that got restocked? .. I was only able to see the Architect. It wasnt the Survivor Pinup was it, I would cry if I missed her ;_;

    13. Kevin "vCJD" on February 14, 2013

Greedy but I bought 2 Architects, too make both variants. My apologies people love the mini.

    14. Pride365 on February 14, 2013

I just got both of them in case you miss these most of the time CMON gets what ever the KD shop gets like a day or 2 later but I would get in on them quick!

    15. Kevin "vCJD" on February 14, 2013

A couple of pinups just popped up on the KD shop if your quick :-)

    16. Jason Windedahl on February 13, 2013

I second that engraved is a must, I've have silk screened dice before and the inks just don't hold up to regular use

    17. Herrflik on February 12, 2013

Engraved dice are a must, I don't mind if they aren't extremely ornate just a bit of uniqueness to them is good :)

Hope the China trip goes well. Looking forward to the pledge manager soon as that is going to help you a lot in getting things moving production wise and also giving us some pleasure in filling them out.

Not to be skeptical but how is the timing schedule looking? with the amazing success of the KS I am sure many of us would like an update soon as to whether Nov 2013 is a realistic goal or will we have to wait a little longer. Let us know promptly if the schedules change and indeed what is happening as you progress.

I do hope that Adam is getting some help/advice from experienced hands at China sourcing such as the CMON crowd . . . my experiences have been somewhat mixed to date (I mean professionally and not in terms of buying minis). Managing long supply chains with langauge barriers is tremendously hard.

Fingers crossed for a proven supplier of high quality miniatures to the market (i.e. someone who already appreciates the quality standard).

    19. Victor Garrison on February 12, 2013

So does this mean souvenir t-shirts for everybody that read:
Somebody toured factories in China and all I got was a lousy t-shirt?

      Actually, it could read:
Somebody toured factories in China and all I got is THE MOST AWESOME GAME EVER CREATED!

Oh YEAH! It's our birthdays!!! I can't believe how excited I still am. Is this gonna be like this for the rest of the year? I can't wait for Christmas lay-off so I can play with my toys!

      And yes...engraved dice are nice...

Have fun in China and post pictures of the trip, please!

    20. Pride365 on February 11, 2013

@Jeff Kagel Yep I am still here and still commenting and answering questions. Do I know anything official? Nope but I have prolly read more than most people and yeah I share my knowledge but I have seen some pretty basic questions repeated over and over so I share what I know and I have never said it was official in any way just what I had found in updates or from KD comments.

    21. David Lee Seymour on February 11, 2013

      1) Looking AWESOME as usual !!
      2) ENGRAVE the dice is a MUST! silkscreening wears off, especially if the dice are rolled together. and just for thought, the symbol on a die pip should be simply. its got to be iconic, easy to read at a glance. you don't want too intricate designs there , especially if they're going to wear off after a few games.

    22. Barabajagl on February 11, 2013

      @ Jeff K - Thank you.
@ Adam - And thank you also. I won't hold you to a weekly update, but as others have pointed out any update is a good one (though pics always make it better.) This will be an agonizingly long wait till Nov., and any news will help pass that time and keep every bodies level of enthusiasm up.

And I'll also put in my endorsement of engraved over screened.

    23. greywulf on February 11, 2013

Just looked through every update again and it looks like the face belongs to Holiday Nico.

@Scott Steussy Not every mini has a lantern. My Twilight Knight pinup doesn't.

    24. greywulf on February 11, 2013

      Miko looks amazing!

Does anyone know who the faces in the last pic belong to? What figure, I mean?

    25. Scott Steussy on February 11, 2013

      Where are their lanterns?

    26. John H. on February 11, 2013

BattleLore? I love the game, but I hate the dice so much!

The problem with BattleLore is the fascination of silk-screened color for color's sake, especially with two of the faces using identical icons in very slightly close shades of green & blue. The first batch had problems with the silk-screened ink wearing quickly, requiring a lot of replacements. Major component issue for a first time game.

Had these been larger acrylic dice with a different engraved symbol on each face (1 / 2 / 3 swords for green / blue / red), that game would have been much better. White icons on translucent dice, and players could color the swords, shield & lore with markers or paint.

Really, good acrylic dice beat screened every time.

Awesome update Adam. They look great. Primal Huntress was always my favorite, now even more so. Definitely go for engraved on the dice. Better durability over time.

@Pride LOL God you are annoying. Still answering questions when you don't know a damn thing I see. Well at least you're consistent I guess.

Hate to see anything done in China due to the ongoing pattern and practice of piracy and poor quality production. >.<

    30. MoonPowder on February 11, 2013

      Thanks for the update Adam!
      These WIP updates are fun.
Like everything else you do with KD,
I say quanlity first. So if that means engraved, so be it.

    31. Pride365 on February 11, 2013

@Industrial Scribe Most of my comments are in the main section and talking about a whole range of things and for the most part the rest of my comments are in answer to other peoples questions or comments very few of my comments have been @Kingdom Death and trying to influence the project as I trust him and his judgement. I have expressed that I like certain things but mostly as to talk about something that has me excited and to find other people who feel the same way. If you feel I am getting 2 much influence with my comments then start commenting as much as I have. Though all of your math was very cool I btw only gave KD 850$ of my dollars but if I can swing it want to give about 557 more as of right now.

    32. Isrious on February 11, 2013

would have to agree with pretty much everybody that engraved is the way to go with your dice - the design may be simpler, but the longevity outweighs that.

p.s. keep the updates coming, even if it's just a quick pictureless update on what progress has been made, it helps the many months fly by and keeps us all excited to finally paint and play with these beautiful minis. I already have a waiting list of friends that want to play this with me but were unable to find the spare cash for the kickstarter or didn't hear about it in time ^^

    33. Industrial Scribe on February 11, 2013

I have no problem with people expressing themselves. If I'm not mistaken your comments take up about 15% of total comments of this project (About 800 backers worth or $307,458.15 of funding). If you gave this much cash to the project or are really 800 people then you are getting your fair share of input I would say.

Chessex is here in the city I live in and I know a few people who work there so I would have to recommend them. I know they can do a lot of customization.

    35. Pride365 on February 11, 2013

@Industrial Scribe I have seen all of the pics and I agree they look amazing. As for me responding to comments and questions well that is what I do I am sorry if that bothers you but I have read every comment on all the updates and the main comment section as well as all of Adam's comments more than once so I try to provide information where I can since not everyone has read everything. As for my earlier response to your comment I am sorry I got your name mixed up with someone else's comment it happens I am human.

As for us needing having to pay more for Wyrd/Trollcast I am sure Adam will go with what is best no matter the cost as he has shown quality is hos top priority. He has also said all the money raised has opened up more plastic possibilities than he had b4.

    36. Industrial Scribe on February 11, 2013

It may be that you use a text only browser and could not see all of the sculpts shown in this update. I advise you take a look they are great.

    37. Industrial Scribe on February 11, 2013

I meant that the quality of the sculpt will lose something when cast in plastic. I want this to be as little detail loss as possible and am willing to pay more to get Wyrd/Trollcast.

This is again me trying to express an opinion to influence the project, not sure where you got the fact that I had seen finished plastic casts but I'm glad you take such interest in everyone's posts and reply even if it is to something that wasn't asked or said.

    38. Scott Kirby on February 11, 2013

Good luck in your trip to China. If you happen to stop over in Malaysia give me a buzz and we'll set something up.

    39. AGN1964 on February 11, 2013

      Great update, images look awesome.

During the KS Project, there were many questions about the plastic being used for the figures. Have you started looking at different plastic options? Are there products that use a similar plastic we can look at?

I imagine this decision needs to be made reasonably early in the process.

    40. Lawrence Long on February 11, 2013

I would go with what ever gives the most accurate roll. If they look AMAZING but are unbalanced and always roll 2's.... that could be a problem.

    41. Evan B on February 11, 2013

      Either way, please do engraved!

    42. Evan B on February 11, 2013

Maybe bug the GameScience guy? Not sure if he does custom dice, but his dice are pretty much cream of the crop. Not sure how to contact him, his website's not working correctly for me.

I know the coolest custom dice I have ever seen come from Q workshop, but don't know if they would be able to do such a large run. Also, they generally want every face to be custom, at least for retail orders.…

    44. EKOI on February 11, 2013

Thank you for addressing the previous complaints regarding the Primal Huntress pinup. She looks like a much stronger character now than compared to the previous render.

Scott Davidson on February 11, 2013

It seems there's a preponderance of favor for engraved. As it costs more and the budget is finite what does that extra spending cut into? For example I'd gladly accept silkscreen for higher quality minis.

    47. Rand Chua TL on February 11, 2013

      Great looking updates!

      on February 11, 2013

      Hey Adam,

      have fun in China

As to the dice, you REALLY need to go engraved otherwise the dice just end up as decoration. A simpler, but long lasting product is fine

Printed dice wear very fast when used as soon get to the point you can't read them and become useless

    49. G&T
      on February 11, 2013

re: dice...definitely go engraved. I'm sure engraved is pricier and I'm sure it has design limitations BUT silkscreened/printed dice will not live up to the premium feel I think you are trying to achieve with this game. In my experience, they come across as cheap (feeling) and I have yet to hear of any that don't fade over time with some fading shockingly fast (as in after just a few game sessions...see 1st Edition King of Tokyo just a couple years back or Battlelore a few more years back). Just my 3 cents...

    50. Pride365 on February 11, 2013

@Industrial Scribe Quality of what sculpts? They are going to use the same sculpt for all castings. Now if you mean you want to see the quality of the cast then as soon as he decides what plastic he is going with there will be a ton pf pics you can look at online. But as of right now he has been mum about what kind of plastic he wants.
