Find Your Balance
The Pono Board balances Body - Mind - Life. The easy lateral motion strengthens the core and frees the mind. The patented Pono Board isolates motion to the horizontal plane. Inspired by exercising and playing on sand at the beach.
How does the Pono Board work?
The Pono's patented & adjustable Micro Motion base works like ball bearings. It’s has a very unique type of lateral instability, that isolates motion to the horizontal plane. The amount of movement is variable, and can be easily adjusted by changing the pressure in the balls. The board is designed to minimize the ’see saw’ or ‘teeter totter’ that you feel on most balance boards. Instead the platform of the Pono Board moves or shifts back and forth, left and right, while staying parallel to the ground. This lateral motion naturally engages core stability muscles while at a standing work station, or any workout. It stimulates more core muscle activity than working or exercising on a stable surface.
Use it in the Office with a standing desk, for uninterrupted workflow, unlike other standing desk balance boards. The Pono's micro-movements of lateral instability are easy to use. This allows your mind to be productive, instead of focusing on balance. You’ll get the added benefits of being on a balance board, such as dynamically engaging your whole body, without any distraction. It's like a fidget spinner for you whole body!
Who is the Pono Board for?
Anyone who wants to add core muscle strength but doesn't have the time to add a core workout. It’s easily compatible with standing desk, any fitness goals or lifestyle. Using small lateral movements of instability, the Pono will challenge and strengthen your core.
Pono Board 2.0 & KickStarter exclusives
The balls on the Pono Board 2.0 are 2X bigger than the Original (not available). It has 2X more movement and 2X the core challenge. It also has an increased weight capacity for your all your workout needs. A clear sand grip surface, as well and a darker "carbon" colored bamboo deck, are both KickStarter exclusive options.
Beach workout inspired
We've created the Pono Board to have the same level of instability as the beach. Engaging core stabilizing muscles, but simple to use, so you don’t have to concentrate on your balance. The Pono Board’s Micro Motion is designed to respond to movement just like the beach. The beach creates dynamic instability, that’s why exercising on it is more challenging. The sand moves when you move, and your body has to compensate by using more stabilizing muscles.
How to use the Pono Board?
The Pono Board is fun, easy and convenient to use. No training required! Beginners and experts see the same results. It's compatible with all lifestyles and existing workouts from mindful Yoga, to intense cross training. Use it at the office for a needed break, and it works great as a complement to a standing desk.
Is the Pono Board difficult?
The difficulty and danger of using the Pono is very low, so anyone of any skill level can use it. Reducing the vertical see-saw movement of traditional balance boards lowers the danger and difficulty. The Pono Board is a workout multiplier. If you like to do relaxing Yoga, or extreme cross training, the Pono matches your intensity. It’s the only balance board you don’t need to think about, but you still get the benefits of using it.
What's the Pono made of?
Being "green" is important, for our families, and our company. The Pono Board is made from sustainably harvested bamboo. It’s Formaldehyde free and low VOC. It's barefoot friendly and has a nice organic feel. The Pono’s Micro Motion base is created from Eco-Friendly Plastic that is free of dangerous phthalates and BPA.
The Pono Board 2.0 is the only ball size available on KickStarter.
The balls on the Pono Board 2.0 are 2X bigger (than Original), for 2X more movement and 2X the core challenge. It also an increased weight capacity of 350 lbs, for your all your workout needs.

Hi we are Danielle and Jeff, and this is a story about our journey of how we created balance in our lives. We are a husband and wife team and the co-founders of the Pono Board and Pono Ola. Our family consists of our two children, and an additional four legged and furry child we named Kona. We are lucky. We married our best friend and we are reminded of that often. We also enjoy our moments of quality time, are sometimes silly, and love to dream about our future life and family. We are both creatives, visionaries, and are both entrepreneurs: me, a professional photographer and boutique photography service owner, and Jeff, the founder and marketing director of a successful business. However, in our attempt to navigate life while running two businesses and raising our children we began to feel overwhelmed from physical and emotional exhaustion. We found that we were often too stressed and busy to spend quality time with our children and other relationships around us. From this realization, Jeff began to transition out of his company and begin a new journey towards balanced living. It was at this point that the Pono Board was born.
When we originally designed the Pono Board we wanted something that we could use for both work and play. It’s a tool that keeps us refreshed at work and challenges our fitness. We use it at a standing desk and sometimes even for washing dishes and for simple work tasks, or it can be incorporated into almost any fitness exercise. The Pono Board is also a way for us keep ourselves physically and emotionally in balance. We call our company Pono Ola which means "balanced life" out of our journey to live a life and raise our children with purpose. Pono Ola is a community of like minded people that can support and encourage one another on this journey. We love to share the challenges we have faced, the triumphs we have celebrated and learn from the others as well. It's our accountability and our community. We’d love to invite you to join us in our community and follow along on our journey.
Risks and challenges
Our Challenges | How do we create a balance board that feels like a beach workout, strengthening the core, without being dangerous. We achieved this with the Pono Board Original, and now the Pono Board 2.0 has 2X more movement, and the same great feel. Our second challenge how to create a product that looks and feels like a custom, hand crafted balance board. Like a local artisan made it just for you. We also want to mass produce it, so that more people can experience the Pono Board's very unique type of movement. Handcrafted mass production is what we've made. Most products of this quality are locally made. We created a boutique product that is available to everyone.
The biggest risk with this project was, what if we create the mass production mold for the Pono Board 2.0, and the product comes out looking great but doesn’t perform like the Pono Board Original. Yikes! We've been producing the Original for a year, so we have some experience. To over come this problem we’ve invested in a mold. It’s not a mass production, high volume mold like the project is funding, but it did allow us to create a fully functioning, full size prototype. We’ve poured a series of prototypes using this mold. The results have been great. We’ve already spotted some design flaws, and made alterations to our mold and the prototypes. Stay tuned for updates. We’ve worked out kinks with our prototype, but more importantly, we’ve created a system to overcome future problems. We know how to create the Pono Board 2.0, with all the same qualities and characteristics as the Original. We also know that our project funded mass production molds will work, and we’ll be able to deliver the Pono Board 2.0 on time.
A second risk that we’ve overcome has to do with mass production, and the rotomolding process. To create a beautiful and successful final product, the plastic resin has to flow into the mold smoothy and evenly. If it doesn’t do that, there could be defects, like air pockets or voids. We knew early on in the industrial design process what material we’re using and what industrial methods we’re going to apply. That enabled us to foster relationships with our manufacturers. We’ve worked hand in hand with their in house engineers, who are very familiar with these materials and processes. They have helped us, through the drafting process, to design a product that can be successfully molded without defects.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
