The goal of this Kickstarter is to fund and promote Ukulele Spells: Coda — a magical comic that teaches you to play the ukulele through spellcasting. As part of Kickstarter’s Small Press Spotlight, we’re publishing a deluxe-edition reprint of POMEpress’s bestselling Ukulele Spells, which includes the original Ukulele Spells comics, along with a handful of fun extras and enchanting new lessons.
Ukulele Spells: Coda is a ukulele lesson book in comics form. Each lesson teaches you something new about how to play your uke — a new strumming pattern, a new chord — and then shows you how to use that new skill to cast a little spell! The spells range from practical (help me find my keys) to fun (help those cupcakes in the oven turn out delicious), and they are all sure to delight!
Ukulele Spells: Coda was written and drawn by Rachel Weiss. This softcover black-and-white, roughly 60+ page volume includes:
- Improved, retouched versions of the original Ukulele Spells comics
- A higher print quality volume
- Sheet music pages for you to write your own ukulele spells
- New, never-before-seen ukulele spells created just for this edition!
Items offered in our reward tiers include (but are not limited to):
Downloadable Ukulele Spells sheet music pages! Write your very own spells on these blank sheet music pages!
Ukulele Spells: Coda print & digital books!
Music magic postcards! When you pick up physical copies of our books through this Kickstarter, you can also grab three postcards from our amazing guest artists: Ashley Robin Franklin, Morgan Thomas, and Jamie Kaye!
POMEpress book bundles! Get physical and digital copies of Ukulele Spells, along with our bewitching comics spellbook omnibus, Eternal Witchcraft and our Prism Award-nominated Group Chat, a comic anthology about friendship and found family.
...And, if you spend more than $10 USD supporting the Ukulele Spells Kickstarter, we’ll put your name in the book!
But keep your aura sensitive to changes in the astral landscape because we’ll be announcing new reward tiers as we get closer to our goal!
All funds received from this project will be used to fund printing and distribution of Ukulele Spells: Coda. Funding will also go towards the guest artists who contributed postcards through this project. If the total amount of money raised through this Kickstarter exceeds our highest stretch goals, those funds will be put towards upcoming POME Press projects, including our newest anthology, Going Steady.
Here is our breakdown of Kickstarter expenses:
Printing Physical Books and Postcards: Roughly 60% of our budget goes into printing physical copies of the book and postcards from our guest artists. However, this percentage may rise depending on the number of physical copies ordered through this Kickstarter.
Shipping: 20% of our budget is set aside for shipping and mailing supplies.
Paying our Guest Artists: About 10% of our budget will be going to the guest artists who have created the bonus illustrations for our three bonus postcards. In addition to paying each illustrator $100, we are providing them with 20 complimentary postcards for their own resale purposes.
Taxes and Fees: Just under 10% of the budget goes back into Kickstarter fees, state and federal taxes, and related purposes.
Additional Expenses: The categories listed above represent the bulk of this Kickstarter's expenses. However, we may commission artists to produce original content for new reward tiers during this campaign. Additionally, your funds may go towards supplies like envelopes, mailers, and other materials.
All of our stretch goals go straight back to our talented guest illustrators or to you, our young witch in training!
$5,000: Each guest illustrator will get +$100, and we’ll include the color illustrations as bonus content in the back of the book.
$7,000: All physical reward pledges will come with a bookplate sticker specially designed to compliment the Ukulele Spells: Coda aesthetic.
A very special thank you to Gabe Alvarez for putting together our Kickstarter video for us (you're the best!!). Also thank you to our dogs; we love you very much.
Risks and challenges
Because the book has been created by our beautiful and talented High Crone and Co-Founder, Rachel Weiss, and because the payments to our guest illustrators have already been secured, the only potential risk to getting rewards done on time is possible delays in printing. Because of our experience printing large anthologies, we’re confident that we can address any printing challenges that may arise.
Other than that, we'll be shipping through USPS, and the normal risks through shipping apply. If you don't receive your reward within a reasonable time, we'll work to make sure you get this beautiful book into your hands as soon as possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
