Welcome to Pooka Pets, a game for iOS, Android, Mac, and PC platforms that allows the player to customize, care for, and play with their very own Pooka. As shape-shifting fairies from Irish folklore, Pookas can take on a variety of shapes and forms as they learn and grow. Collect gems to enhance your Pooka's magical powers of transformation, explore new areas to find objects and craft unique accessories, and meet new friends as you go!
The pooka customization system is a head to tail experience. With an assortment of animal forms, coat colors, and hairstyles there are billions of combinations available, so start collecting today! By spending gems on new coats, wings, and hairstyles your Pooka can always look their best. They can even purchase accessories or make their own.
If you’re looking for a little more to do with your Pooka, try out a mini-game! On initial release you’ll be able to find a hidden sprout in the challenging shell game or test your memory in Catterfly Match! With enough funding we will also be able to add an exciting racing game and other fun features in future releases.
Collecting gems for your Pooka is an integral part of the game. By interacting with your Pooka and cleaning up messes around its clearing, you will be able to earn the gems used to unlock new colors, forms, and accessories. You can also use your Pooka’s gems to upgrade their home and buy decorations for their clearing.
After you customize your very own Pooka, snap a few photos and share them with friends and family! With kickstarter support our team will be able to implement even more sharing features, including the ability to visit other Pooka homes, gift items to other players, and vote for your favorite Pooka clearing!
With plenty of room for expansion in the Pooka world, it is one of our goals to eventually implement a scavenger hunt through different woodland, marsh, and desert scenes to collect the materials needed to craft an assortment of special, area specific accessories. These accessories will be used to unlock new areas, befriend new creatures, and much, much more.
Pooka Pets is a simple pet and customization game, but there's still a lot more we can do. Through Kickstarter we hope to fund additional features and items, including enhanced environment customization, more mini-games, improved sharing, and explorable areas with scavenger hunts, etc. Right now we have a prototype of the core game finished, along with mini-games and some of the more basic interactive features. What Kickstarter will allow us to do is enable our team to really polish what we have. Not only that, but we'll be able to add more content and features to the base game. We want the game to have plenty of options for player interaction, and with your help we can make that happen!
While these may be adjusted as we receive more feedback on the game, here are some of our current plans for improving the game further for our initial release in the event we surpass our original funding goal:
- $30,000 Fall and Winter environments (appropriately timed for the coming seasons)
- $40,000 Two additional themed accessory packs
- $50,000 Special walkabout exploration paths, where Pookas can find the ingredients they need to craft their own accessories
- $75,000 Pooka Environment Sharing and Gifting Features
So who are we?
Pokey Toad is an independent development team dedicated to making fun games, plain and simple. We believe in making games people want to play, so for us Kickstarter is a great place to test the waters, get some feedback, and really get to know our potential audiences. While we have each developed games in the past, Pooka Pets is our first game as a studio, and we're looking forward to its completion and initial release coming this fall.
Risks and challenges
Customization -- The development of the customization engine is pretty much complete, but we still have a ways to go to reach our vision for the number and type of accessories to provide on release of the app.
Testing -- With hundreds of individual options and close to if not already beyond a billion combinations it takes a lot of time to hook things up and making sure they all work right--and with enough backing we can take the time to be a lot more thorough in making sure things are in tip top shape.
Pooka Forms -- While we plan on getting all three initial forms into the game as fast as we can there's always the case for so much to do so little time. For now the cat is a stretch goal for the games initial release, and may be delayed further depending on when other, higher priority items, are implemented. Regardless of whether the cat form is in the game, we still plan on releasing Pooka Pets around the end of August.
Pooka Interactivity -- If we're successfully funded, we will hopefully be able to implement more ways to interact with both your Pooka and its environment, from additional animations on characters and objects, to more control over how your Pooka behaves. The extent will likely be heavily reliant on the level of funding, but every little bit helps bring the game to a better polish.
Server Functionality -- Perhaps one of the biggest things we're shooting for is backing to help the development of player authentication and purchase management. This will allow us to keep track of earned gems and accessory purchases on a hosted server. This will also enable the player to log in on multiple devices without losing their customized Pooka pet. Everything has to be saved somewhere after all, and kickstarter funding will be critical in helping us procure the necessary hosting for player server-side data.
Game Expansion -- While we're always looking for ways to expand this game and make it more involved for you as players, we understand the issues and time constraints that may arrise with adding extensive new features such as gifting options, deeper world exploration and interactivity etc. We'll obviously do our best to make sure we get Pooka Pets finished on time, but we also want to make sure the quality is the best it can possibly be before we launch our initial release. Hopefully you can bear with us while we keep you posted on progress via our blogs and other media outlets if anything comes up to delay the project in any way.
With a bit of your support and whole bunch of feedback, we're totally confident with our team and our ability to complete this project. We sure hope you can be part of it!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
