Cutting-edge Fuel Cell Technology
The HALO Fuel Cell uses our patented fuel cell technology (M-SOFC) to charge USB-compatible devices. Our M-SOFC cells are made primarily of stainless steel, with very thin layers of ceramic. The M-SOFC is extremely rugged, capable of rapid thermal cycling and abusive thermal shock, and tolerant to all types of fuels with no fuel processing.This is not a thermoelectric generator. Fuel cells are more efficient than thermoelectrics and more convenient than solar.

There are no moving parts in the HALO. The ring of fuel cells is housed in a high quality stainless steel body. An optimized circuit transfers energy from the fuel cell directly into your device. As for the lifetime of the fuel cells, they last years under normal usage.

Founded in 2008, Point Source Power is currently producing and distributing our first product in Kenya: a cellphone/LED charging unit for developing regions we call the VOTO. We’ve received interest from gadget enthusiasts, campers, and survivalists for this technology and are now looking to launch a product designed for the U.S. For this market we have moved away from a charcoal-based system that requires the use of a ceramic cook stove found in East Africa, and have instead designed a solution that utilizes gas canisters like those used for camping.
Risks and challenges
Finishing the product development process can be challenging, but our past experience bringing our previous product (VOTO) to completion will lessen the uncertainties in doing the same with the HALO. Our accomplished team has the track record and skills to tackle any foreseeable obstacles.
Compliance to certification laboratory standards (UL) will be a key step. Failing to be UL compliant the first time can lead to unnecessary delays in the release. We will put in the effort to ensure all components pass before sending it off for certification.
Manufacturing at high volume requires substantial upfront costs. We will address this by designing for manufacturability and assembling in the U.S. so every end-product looks and performs to our standard.
A canister will last about 1 hr at full throttle (for boiling, same as a typical stove) and about 3 hours for electricity-only mode (less fuel needed for electricity than for electricity+boiling). Running for 3 hours produces 3000 mAh (15Wh) total out of the USB ports.
An iPhone battery is about 1400 mAh and an iPad is about 11,000 mAh, so you can do the math for how much charge an XX minute charging session will get you.
