We started as several families that love technology, and some time ago were introduced to the amazing world of three dimensional printing. However the 3D printers we found were both too expensive and looked like they belonged in a lab or factory rather than at home. Further we could not find a good source of easy to understand educational material on how to take advantage of your 3D printer and teach us and our kids about it.
We challenged a brilliant team of local 3D printer engineers to design a printer that was affordable to own and operate, simple and safe enough to use so that even our young kids could use it, and looked elegant in a home setting.

The Poieo3D software slices a 3D image file into thin layers and physically builds it up by printing one layer at a time out of plastic. Think of it like you’re making a loaf of bread by placing individual slices, one on top of another, in correct order to form its shape. Each slice is only as thin as a piece of paper so very fine detailed is captured.
Poieo3D uses a plastic that is environmentally friendly and biodegradable; it is derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane. This also means printing does not give off nasty fumes like some other plastics, making it suitable to use at home or in the classroom. The material comes as a filament that is wound on a spool and is available in a rainbow variety of colors.
Three dimensional printing can bring almost any object you can imagine to life - but we’re taking it further. Poieo3D is easy to use, looks great, and is economical for today’s consumer.
Each unit is factory calibrated and tested before we ship it, so you don’t have to. Just install the software, plug it in, and you are ready to start printing. Thousands of 3D image files are available on-line to download free of charge from a variety of websites. To print one, you simply open it in the Poieo3D software, click slice and then print. That’s it. Advanced users also have the ability to precisely control every aspect of their print. You can also make your own 3D image files using free 3D modeling software from the internet or even from smartphone apps that make 3D images by taking photos around an object. We’ll provide instructions to show you how.
We’ve designed a unique easy-to-remove build plate on which your objects will print. It is held securely in place magnetically, making for easy setup and removal of finished prints with no need for clumsy clamps or other means to hold it in place.
Although easy to use for anyone, the Poieo3D Printer is an advanced tool with many sophisticated features for the discriminating user. Advanced users will find options to control every aspect of the printer in the software. We don’t believe in locking you into using proprietary 3D image files and the Poieo3D will work with other open source software that produces Gcode. This gives advanced users and students the flexibility to use Poieo3D without constraints

We have taken great care to design the Poieo3D to have simple elegant curves and a form factor that will look great sitting on your desk at home, in your child’s bedroom, or in your classroom! Poieo3D uses standard 1.75mm PLA filament that is widely available. In addition, we have optimized a high quality PLA filament. When used with the Poieo3D Printer, our filament will help produce higher-quality prints, reduce filament problems, and minimize downtime. Our initial product line has a rainbow assortment of colors and will come in several sizes. We will continue to add colors and variety, including flexible material in the near future.
Our commitment is to make the filament available at a very reasonable price on our website. Typical prints will cost anywhere from pennies to a few dollars in filament. The Poieo 3D was designed by a talented team of engineers and computer scientists in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. To keep price down and quality high, we will use a combination of imported and domestic components and final assembly, quality assurance, and factory calibration will be done in Canada at our Greater Toronto Area location.

Risks and challenges
We have worked extremely hard to make this product ready for Kickstarter and full-scale manufacturing and fulfillment, but as with any product launch there are always some risks and here is what we see:
INJECTION MOLDING: Creating tooling for the Injection molded parts is expensive and requires expertise – it is part science and part artistic optimization to get it right. At Poieo3D we demand tight tolerances and a high quality finish. Although we have allotted sufficient lead time to produce the large components, there is the chance that it may take longer than expected. To minimize that possibility we have been working in concert with the tooling manufacturers to help design parts that not only look great and work well, but are also easier to manufacture.
SUPPLY CHAIN AND LOGISTICS: Sometimes things go astray that can’t be planned for during fulfilment: a supplier misses a deadline, a machine breaks down, or a shipment gets delayed or even lost. Any of these things could cause a delay. To minimize that likelihood our 3D printer engineers are using component suppliers and supply chain partners with whom they have established experience and comfort in delivering quality parts on time.
