The 7th Annual New York City Poetry Festival will be held on Governors Island on July 29th and 30th, 2017. That's right, New Yorkers! Your city's own poetry festival, the largest gathering of its kind, returns this summer -- and with exciting news. After six years wrapped in the breezy embrace of Colonel's Row, The New York City Poetry Festival is migrating east across the island to picturesque Nolan Park. The move is designed to give our growing festival a little breathing room and some new possibilities. Nolan Park is more than twice the size of Colonel's Row, ringed with a collection of beautiful Victorian houses, and tucked beneath the wide, green canopies of dozens of century old trees. This summer we will transform our festival into a poetry village! In addition to our three main stages, along with The Ring of Daisies Open Mic and The Children's Poetry Festival, Governor's Island has invited us to occupy and program the trellised porches that circle the park. With all this new space to explore, we are working harder than ever to bring more poetry and poetry lovers to the island.
With that in mind and with the help of our newest festival partner The Strand Bookstore, we are redoubling our outreach in order to make this the biggest and most culturally significant festival we have ever produced. We would love for you to take part: host a reading, become a vendor, volunteer for the festival, or get involved in some other creative way that we haven't even come up with yet!
The goal of The New York City Poetry Festival is to be the most egalitarian and inclusive poetry gathering in the world. Since it's inception the festival has remained free and open to the public. Any group or organization involved in the creation or appreciation of poetry is invited to curate a thirty minute reading on one of the festival's three main stages, and all completed applications are accepted on a first come first served basis until the festival roster is full. We also offer tables to any organization or vendor who wishes to participate in our Vendors' Village / Book Fair at a rate of $50 for the entire weekend.
This year we will welcome back more than 75 New York City poetry groups, including venerable institutions, upstarts, small presses, local reading series, literary journals, high school poetry teams, and more to The Festival’s three stages. If year’s past are any indication, over 300 poets will present, and we've already booked some incredible headliners including Aja Monet, Sapphire, Deborah Landau, and Patrick Phillips.
This year also welcomes back our Vendors Village packed with local artisans, literary journals, and small presses, as well as The Festival’s Ring of Daisies Open-Mic, which is often the hottest mic on Governor’s Island. And The Children’s Poetry Festival, sponsored by Writopia Lab, will give our youngest festival attendees a chance to encounter the magic that brought us all to poetry in the first place.
As always, the purpose of the New York City Poetry Festival has been to liberate poets and their work from the dark corners of bars, bookstore, and coffee shops and their halogen-lit college campuses, and to bring together as many NYC poets as possible, in the bright light of day, to meet, mingle, and collaborate. Fostering an open, approachable, diverse, innovative, sharp, and culturally prominent literary community lies at the core of The Poetry Society of New York's mission. While there are still a few entrenched poetry establishments, for many writers and artists, and even the general public, they can seem remote and inaccessible; The Poetry Society of New York aims not only to bridge these gaps, but to unify this city's poetry community in ways never before thought possible.
This year's festival planning is already going strong, and we will make announcements here over the next few weeks. So, donate today to stay up-to-date on the lineup and other featured activities! Oh, and Kickstarter supporters who donate $50 or more even get access to the historic Commanding Officer's House, our exclusive VIP area for members of The Poetry Society of New York and festival sponsors where free drinks and refreshments will be served all day!
Thank you so much for supporting The Poetry Society of New York in its production of the 7th Annual New York City Poetry Festival on Governors Island. Contributors can take great pride and deep pleasure in this gathering—the largest, most participatory poetry festival in the world—which belongs to New York City. With your help the festival will flourish in 2017 and continue to grow in size, quality, and acclaim in the years to come.
Risks and challenges
As with any great endeavor, there are always potential risks and challenges that one might have to overcome. As the organizers of a two-day outdoor festival, our biggest fear is always the weather. Should we be hit with rain on the planned dates, we will get wet... but with a decent happiness.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
