As we all know, New York is the greatest, most magnetic city in the world. While we are proud of our skyline and our bottom line, true New Yorkers know that it is this city’s cultural footprint that stretches the greatest distance from our shores. The legends and lore of this city are its true siren song. And, it is this song that calls out to both visitors and residents-to-be, wherever they may be, and brings them in droves to taste the richness of this place.
The New York City Poetry Festival is a beacon, which reminds the world that the poets are alive and well and here to contribute to the record of our city in a way only they can offer. Whether it is the particular slant of light falling on a blade of grass in Sheep’s Meadow or the sound of the harbor rushing into the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, the world has long relied on its poets to remember.
The 3rd Annual New York City Poetry Festival will be held on Governors Island’s Colonel’s Row on July 27th and 28th, 11am-5pm. The Poetry Society of New York will once again invite New Yorkers to come together for this two day festival to celebrate NYC’s vibrant poetry community. The event will include over 50 poetry organizations and 200 poets on its three stages; a Vendor’s Village where local booksellers, artists and craft makers will sell their wares; a beer garden sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery; healthy and delicious food options provided by the Kimchi Taco Truck, Morris Grilled Cheese, Mud Coffee, and Palenque Columbian Food Truck; poetry-inspired installation art throughout, and, of course, the legendary Children’s Festival at NYCPF, this year sponsored by Writopia!
The purpose of this festival has been to liberate poets and their work from the dark corners of bars, bookstores, and coffee shops and their halogen-lit college campuses, and to bring together as many NYC poets as possible, in the bright light of day, to meet, mingle, and collaborate. Fostering an open, accessible, diverse, innovative, fun, and culturally prominent literary community lies at the core of The Poetry Society of New York's mission. While there are still a few entrenched poetry establishments, for many writers and artists, and even the general public, they can seem remote and inaccessible; The Poetry Society of New York aims not only to bridge these gaps, but to unify this city's poetry community in ways never before thought possible. By opening doors to diverse and unique artistic interactions, the New York City Poetry Festival electrifies arts and literature, brings poetry to new light in the public eye, and ultimately, allows New York City the be rightful center of the poetry world.
The First Annual New York City Poetry Festival in 2011 was honored to present such award-winning writers as Yusef Komunyakaa, Matthea Harvey, and Matthew Rohrer, but more importantly the festival gave poets and poetry lovers from all five boroughs an opportunity to hear, appreciate, and interact with poets whom they might never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. The Second Annual New York City Poetry Festival presented ex-Poet Laureate of the US, Mark Strand, National Book Award winner, Patricia Smith, and widely celebrated actress and emerging poet, Amber Tamblyn, among 200 other New York City poets, and over 50 artists of other mediums. By reaching outside the established poetry communities, The Poetry Society of New York hopes to create new audiences for poetry and facilitate collaborations between poets and other artists. Similarly, by reaching out to colleges, high schools, and grade schools, the festival hopes to encourage, educate, and inspire fledgling writers of all ages to become a part of New York’s diverse and dynamic poetry scene.
This year's festival planning is already going strong, and we will make announcements here over the next few weeks. So, donate today to stay up-to-date on the lineup and other featured activities! This Kickstarter campaign will culminate in a two-part fundraising event at Forgotten Works Studio on May 4th. We'll have an outdoor BBQ from 5pm-9pm with beer from Brooklyn Brewery and a Poetry Brothel that evening from 9pm-2am. Admission for each event is $10, but if you donate $10 to our kickstarter here, your admission to both events is absolutely FREE!
Thank you so much for supporting The Poetry Society of New York in its production of the third annual New York City Poetry Festival on Governors Island. Residents can take great pride and deep pleasure in this gathering—the largest, most participatory poetry festival in the world—which belongs to New York City. And visitors can experience a living, breathing poetry community for themselves. With your help
the festival will flourish in 2013 and continue to grow in size, quality, and acclaim in the years to come.
Risks and challenges
As with any great endeavor, there are always potential risks and challenges that one might have to overcome. As the organizers of a two-day outdoor festival, our biggest fear is always the weather. Should we be hit with rain on the planned dates, we have two rain dates the following weekend. While lineups may have to shift as a result, we are confident that there are enough important writers living in NYC that any pinch-hitter will be a delight!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
