About

This musical has been my life's work and I hope it will have a place in Broadway history. Poe has been a passion ever since a good friend suggested I write this musical. I spent years researching Eddy’s biography and stories. Initially I crafted a draft of the musical and a famous producer was interested. Unfortunately when he passed away, so did the opportunity. I became tremendously disheartened after all of my years of work. I put the project in a drawer and focused on writing six screenplays and many one-woman cabaret shows, while working at various studios and production companies in Hollywood.

Now it’s time for Poe to get finished and onto the stage where it belongs. Everyone who hears the music and reads the already written scenes agrees that Poe is Broadway quality. I am now at the point where I need a benefactor who will cover basic expenses so I can focus exclusively on completing what remains to be written. Some of the funds I’m requesting will go to that, and the remainder will go to the costs of workshopping it with staged readings, making a CD of the score, and so forth.

I am offering various “perks” depending on the level of your contribution. While my intention is to complete this by April, I cannot guarantee an exact date. I can only promise that I will honor the “perks” when I am able to do so.

I need $25k to cover costs now, and anticipate needing another $25k for the workshop expenses. That is why I need to raise a fund of $50,000. I know there are many great causes out there, many deserving charities, and thousands of talented creatives just like me.

Perhaps you read Poe’s stories in school. Perhaps you’re a Broadway aficionado or supporter of the arts. My intention with this show is to entertain and educate. The show is on a grand scale like “Les Miserables” and “Sweeney Todd,” but with considerably more humor. I refer to this as Poe Lite. (Get it?)

My influences in theatre are, without question, Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Sondheim, and Stephen Sondheim. You will hear his influence in my lyrics. Not so much in the melodies, as mine are a bit more accessible for singers. The show has huge set pieces as well. Phantom’s chandelier won’t hold a candle to Poe’s pendulum!

I have connections in the theatre world. One of them is a renowned Tony-nominated orchestrator who expressed a desire to be involved once the show is ready for orchestrating. I am confident that bringing him onto the project will give Poe the credibility it needs to catapult to Broadway.

In terms of casting, my dream is to have Raúl Esparza as Poe, and John Lithgow or Craig Bierko as Death. Yes, Death is a character. In my show, Death is Poe’s therapist, helping him to come to terms with the choices he made in life. We can all relate to those regrets and “what-if” thoughts, can’t we?

Half of the libretto is written and the rest is outlined/sketched out. Completed songs include: From Beyond, In My Heart, True to Myself, In the Spirit, Quite Mad, Know It All, You and I, Sleep Tonight, Pit of Despair, Dancing with Death. Songs in progress are: Let Me Live Again, The Raven, Eureka, and others.

If you don’t have a lot to give (especially with the economy and the imminent holiday season), I understand. But if 2000 people give $25... or heck, just give $10 and spread the word, my goal will be met. Think of the satisfaction you’ll get when Poe hits Broadway and you will have helped make that happen. Of course, larger donations have some swag coming to them down the road. Those details are on the page with levels of donations.

Thank you for taking a look at my project and giving it consideration. You have no idea how much I appreciate the support!

Risks and challenges

The greatest challenge will be keeping my illnesses at bay so my mind and body stay focused. Of course, all creative projects are a risk; there are no guarantees of success. Even Sondheim had shows that failed.

My deep and true intention is to bring this all the way to Broadway, even if I'm dragging myself across the finish line to make it happen. I am willing to give everything of myself in order to succeed with this show. I am smart, determined, and creating great art is what drives me.
