LOVECRAFT FANS FOR CHILDHOOD LITERACY FINAL STRETCH GOAL! $55,000
“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” - Dr. Seuss
Thanks to our generous backers we are now able to create and donate a life size bust of H.P. Lovecraft to the Providence Athenaeum Library this August. But why stop there? The whole reason we are all in this together is because we love reading. So we've launched a new stretch goal in service of promoting childhood literacy. If we hit this dream goal of $55,000, The H.P. Lovecraft Bronze Bust Project will make a generous financial donation to The Providence Community Library, a publicly funded system that offers childhood literacy programs at its various neighbourhood library branches. These libraries offer various free programs that promote a love of reading in young children from birth (through pre-literacy activities) and onward. The Providence Community Library has already agreed to accept our donation and disburse it specifically to its public Childrens Programming:
"The Providence Community Library is pleased to welcome the installation at the Providence Athenaeum of this wonderful monument to the H.P. Lovecraft," says Steve Kumins, Director of Development at The Providence Community Library. "We are also deeply grateful that The H.P. Lovecraft Bronze Bust Project has chosen to make this generous donation to aid our efforts to promote literacy to the children of Lovecraft's beloved hometown."
Together, we can help thousands of American children learn to read. And perhaps, some of them will even discover Lovecraft some day.
For the task, we have unlocked a new reward! This H.P. Lovecraft Cameo bas-relief features the famous silhouette of the author. It is a 4" x 5" x .25" polymer casting with an antiqued weathered finish and is limited to 100 pieces. It is project exclusive, meaning, it will be available to backers only and will not be sold elsewhere in the future. It can be hung on a wall, used as a paper weight, displayed in a plate holder or affixed to your front door to help keep the Lurker at the Threshold at bay. *NOTE: This reward level includes the Limited Edition Postcard!
ABOUT THE H.P. LOVECRAFT BRONZE BUST PROJECT
Spearheaded by sculptor Bryan Moore, The H.P. Lovecraft Bronze Bust Project is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of the famous author's literary legacy. Lovecraft's cosmic imagination has influenced every region of pop culture including video games, comic books, music and film. After years of hard work, The H.P. Lovecraft Bronze Bust Project has finally secured a location for a life size bronze tribute to Lovecraft at the Providence Athenaeum Library (founded in 1753) and we are looking to his fans and the public to raise the funds needed to place the bust there as a gift of public work on August 22nd, 2013. Please back our project and help give the Dark Prince of Providence the bronze monument he so rightfully deserves.
ABOUT THE PROVIDENCE ATHENAEUM LIBRARY
The Providence Athenaeum Library, founded in 1753 in Providence, Rhode Island, is the fourth oldest subscription library in the United States and a place of immense literary importance. This was a favorite reading spot of H.P. Lovecraft and his greatest source of inspiration, Edgar Allan Poe. The Athenaeum is remarkable for its wide-ranging collections, its wonderful Greek revival building and, most importantly, the people who know and love it. It is the only New England building designed by the great Philadelphia architect, William Strickland. Executive Director Alison Maxell has graciously agreed to accept the bronze bust on behalf of the library.
The life size bust of H.P. Lovecraft will be unveiled in August as part of Necronomicon Providence at the historic Providence Athenaeum Library at 251 Benefit Street. Lovecraft himself references the historic library directly in a letter to Frank Belknap Long (February, 1924):
"Providence, which spurn’d Eddie living, now reveres him dead, and treasures every memory connected with him. The hotel where he stopt, the churchyard where he wander’d, the house and garden where he courted his inamorata, the Athenaeum where he us’d to dream and ramble thro’ the corridors—all are still with us, and as by a miracle absolutely unchang’d even to the least detail." – H.P. Lovecraft

Risks and challenges
The H.P. Lovecraft Bronze Bust Project represents the combined volunteer efforts of a group of dedicated Lovecraft fans, brought together by sculptor Bryan Moore. The team of supporters includes several individuals who have led successful Kickstarter campaigns of their own. Bryan will earn your confidence along the way by bringing you consistent progress updates in the form of photos and videos of the sculpture beginnings to the bronze foundry and all the way to the installation of the bronze bust itself at the Providence Athenaeum Library in August. In fact, we are so confident we will succeed, Bryan's already ordered the clay and started sculpting. United, we can do this for Lovecraft!
While Bryan can donate his time and decades of experience to the project, there are very tangible costs associated with this kind of work of public art, namely the costs of molding the original sculpture at the bronze foundry, the lost wax casting, molten bronze casting, finishing the patina, securing the support pedestal for display and the memorial bronze plaque that will be affixed to the front of the display. Other costs include crating and shipping the very formidable pieces from point of origin to the Providence Athenaeum Library, not to mention the installation of the work. Although so many of the HP Lovecraft Bronze Bust Project sponsors have graciously donated items and services to the project, there are many hidden costs such as substantial postage and shipping to our wonderful donors, that need to be covered to make this tribute a reality.
With a concrete end goal in sight of guaranteed placement at the Providence Athenaeum Library, donors can be assured that their contributions will be secured by not only completion of the sculpture, but the dedication and unveiling at this historic location in Providence as a gift of public work. We hope to see you at the unveiling on August 22, 2013.
