About

The most famous portrait sitting of Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1847 and in the 104 years since his death, he's become the undisputed Godfather of the Vampire in gothic literature, spawning an entire genre' of authors who have written countless books using the image of the sensual, undead Count as a basis for their own work. Stoker's influence cannot be denied as his titular character can be seen in pop culture from games, comic books, toys, clothing...the list is endless. Indeed, "Dracula" is remade as a film endlessly and each new generation discovers it's own iconic and immortal Count as an emblem of darkness to be embraced.

Renowned artist Graham Humphreys' incredible project poster

I've been quite privileged to be a part of the kickstarter community to crowdfund busts of other horror authors to be placed in their hometowns. H.P. Lovecraft at the Providence Athenaeum Library in Rhode Island...

Edgar Allan Poe at the Boston Public Library in Massachusetts......

....and now, with your help, I'd like to place a life size, bronze bust of Bram Stoker in the city of his birth at the Dublin Writers Museum on World Dracula Day, May 26th which is also the 119th anniversary of the original publication date of "Dracula".

Dublin Writers Museum  18 Parnell Square  Dublin, Ireland

Joining me on this project is no less than Dacre Stoker, Bram's great-grand nephew who has secured the endorsement of the Bram Stoker Estate which marks the first time the family of such an icon of horror literature has lent their support to such a project.

“ I am very pleased to be a part of the Bram Stoker Bronze Bust Project. The Stoker family would ultimately like to see a statue of Bram displayed in a prominent location in Dublin. A bronze bust is certainly a fitting tribute and this effort by Bryan Moore is to be commended and is worthy of our family's support.”

Bram Stoker's great grand-nephew Dacre Stoker, author and managing partner for the Bram Stoker Estate

Also aboard is legendary Stoker scholar David J. Skal, author of "Hollywood Gothic: The Tangled Web of Dracula from Novel to Stage to Screen" and "The Monster Show" who will be reading from his upcoming landmark biography of Bram Stoker "Something in the Blood: The Untold Story of Bram Stoker" for the first time in public at the unveiling.

"Bram Stoker and his extraordinary novel have received serious critical attention only in recent decades," Skal said. "It's attention long overdue and this wonderful tribute at an important literary institution will help solidify Stoker's reputation as one of the most influential imaginative writers of all time."

Author, Bram Stoker scholar and filmmaker David J. Skal

Supporters of these bust projects include "Game of Thrones" creator George R.R. Martin, Author of "30 Days of Night" Steve Niles, Peter Straub, author of "Ghost Story" and Neil Gaiman, author of Coraline, The Sandman series and American Gods who will also be contributing signed copies of "The Annotated Dracula" to our donors. Filmmakers Stuart Gordon and Guillermo del Toro have also been incredibly generous in lending their continuous support to placing these busts of horror authors along with thousands of fans across the globe

Part of the joy of doing these author bust projects is the pleasure of getting to work directly with fellow fans of these titans of horror. Together we placed bronze tributes of Lovecraft and Poe in their hometowns and now, let's do the same for the author of Dracula and bring Bram home.

Project Creator and Sculptor Bryan Moore

Bryan began working on horror TV and films from the original "Tales from the Darkside” to big budget films like the "Underworld" series. His work encompasses; restorative work on the remains of monks for the Celebrated Cemetery of the Cappucin Friars in Rome, sculpting miniatures for several amusement parks in Tokyo and everything from Buzz Lightyear action figures to endless amounts of Barbie shoes and accessories for Mattel Toys and Upper Deck Sports Collectibles.

Moore now enjoys his true passion of sculpting private commissions and his limited editions of occult icons which often sell out immediately.

In August of 2013, he worked with a talented team to bring a life-size bronze bust of HP Lovecraft to the Providence Athenaeum Library as well as making a donation to the Children's Literacy Program and in October 2014 a bust of Edgar Allan Poe to the Boston Public Library. He is thrilled to be working with an incredibly talented and dedicated project team of fellow Dracula fans to bring a bronze bust of Bram Stoker to Dublin, Ireland on World Dracula Day, 2016.

Risks and challenges

Having now run two extraordinarily successful Kickstarter projects before with the H. P. Lovecraft Bronze Bust Project and the Edgar Allan Poe Bronze Bust Project, I learned a lot. The most effective tool that the teams and I utilized was constant communication with our project backers in the form of updates and video blogs that tracked the progress of the sculpture, casting at the bronze foundry, the installation and the successful delivery of nearly 1000 rewards levels respectively.

While the sculpture and installation of the busts themselves was the "easy" part, it was the arduous task of getting all the promised rewards levels to each of the donors. This has always been the biggest part of each Kickstarter campaign, but every reward level reached its final destination. A few came back due to changed addresses or a damaged shipment, but I stood by my Kickstarter promise, and made good on every single reward level.

We'll be using the same bronze foundry and monument company as we have before. They deliver the goods on time and on budget and the hope is that we'll see many of our same donors back again to support this worthy endeavor.

It is my hope that I continue to earn the trust and confidence of each project backer the same way I have before: constant communication, delivery of product on time as promised and an achieved goal.

    THE ART OF HORROR:
The Art of Horror: An Illustrated History
Amazingly, there has never been a book quite like The Art of Horror a celebration of frightful images, compiled and presented by some of the genre's most respected names. While acknowledging the beginnings of horror-related art in legends and folk tales, the focus of the book is on how the genre has presented itself to the world since the creations of Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley first became part of the public consciousness in the 19th century. It's all here: from early engravings via dust jackets, book illustrations, pulp magazines, movie posters, comic books, and paintings to today's artists working entirely in the digital realm. Editor Stephen Jones and his stellar team of contributors have sourced visuals from archives and private collections (including their own) worldwide, ensuring an unprecedented selection that is accessible to those discovering the genre, while also including many images that will be rare and unfamiliar to even the most committed fan. From the shockingly lurid to the hauntingly beautiful including images of vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, demons, serial killers, alien invaders, and more every aspect of the genre is represented in ten themed chapters. Quotes from artists/illustrators, and a selection from writers and filmmakers, are featured throughout. FORGOTTEN BRAM:
The Forgotten Writings of Bram Stoker
Presented here, for the first time since their publication over a century ago, are twelve previously unknown published works of fiction, poetry, and journalistic writing by Bram Stoker (1847-1912), three works by Stoker never before reprinted, twelve obscure period writings about Stoker, and the exceptionally rare 1913 estate sale catalogue of Stoker's personal library. Through both the original works and extensive archival research presented, this vital collection sheds new light on an enigmatic writer and rejects the view that Dracula is Stoker's only legacy worth consideration. The Forgotten Writings of Bram Stoker underscores not only the intertexuality between Dracula and the other works, but supports the exciting prospect that Stoker's periodical writings account for a much greater force in his literary repertoire than previously accepted. A must-read for Stoker fans and scholars, this collection offers an important window into fin-de-siècle Gothic literature. THE NEW ANNOTATED DRACULA
In his first work since his best-selling The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, Leslie S. Klinger returns with this spectacular, lavishly illustrated homage to Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Traveling through two hundred years of popular culture and myth as well as graveyards and the wilds of Transylvania, Klinger's notes illuminate every aspect of this haunting narrative (including a detailed examination of the original typescript of Dracula, with its shockingly different ending, previously unavailable to scholars). Employing the superb literary detective skills for which he has become famous, Klinger mines this 1897 classic for nuggets that will surprise even the most die-hard Dracula fans and introduce the vampire-prince to a new generation of readers. Signed by authors and project collaborators Leslie Klinger and Neil Gaiman PLUS the project postcard with Graham Humphreys' wonderful art, project t-shirt and our swell one inch Bram Stoker button!!! Sizes up to 5XL.

    SOMETHING IN THE BLOOD:

Something in the Blood: The Untold Story of Bram Stoker, the Man Who Wrote Dracula 1st Edition
Bram Stoker, despite having a name nearly as famous as his legendary Count Dracula, has remained a puzzling enigma. Now, in a psychological and cultural portrait, David J. Skal exhumes the inner world and strange genius of the writer who conjured an undying cultural icon. Stoker was inexplicably paralyzed as a boy, and his story unfolds against a backdrop of Victorian medical mysteries and horrors: cholera and famine fever, childhood opium abuse, frantic bloodletting, mesmeric quack cures, and the gnawing obsession with “bad blood” that inform every page of Dracula. Stoker’s ambiguous sexuality is explored through his lifelong acquaintance with Oscar Wilde, who emerges as Stoker’s repressed shadow self―a doppelgänger worthy of a Gothic novel. The psychosexual dimensions of Stoker’s passionate youthful correspondence with Walt Whitman, his punishing work ethic, and his slavish adoration of the actor Sir Henry Irving are examined in scholarly detail. Signed by author and project collaborator David J. Skal PLUS the project postcard with Graham Humphreys' wonderful art, project t-shirt and our swell one inch Bram Stoker button!!!

    DRACULA TOY THEATER
Bram Stoker's 1897 novel took place in the wild Carpathian Mountains, London and rural England, and various places in between. But the Dracula for which Edward Gorey created the set designs reproduced in miniature here--a version that ran to nearly a thousand Broadway performances--compresses the action to one locale: the sanatorium of Dr. Seward, near the town of Purley, somewhere in the English countryside. Based on Edward Gorey's set and costume designs for his award-winning Broadway production of Dracula, these die-cut, scored, and perforated foldups and foldouts include:
3 pop-up 16 x 12 inch stage sets; cast of 8 (15 figures in all); stage furniture; and a 4-page booklet with exceptionally simple assembly instructions, a synopsis of Gorey's Broadway adaptation of Dracula, and notes on Edward Gorey (1925-2000) and his many magical creations.
Cigar-box style packaging from our project collaborators at Pomegranate, approximately 8 1/2 X 12 1/2 X 1 inches PLUS the project postcard with Graham Humphreys' wonderful art, project t-shirt and our swell one inch Bram Stoker button!!! Sizes up to 5XL.
