About

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

When we started Pod Therapy January 1st 2018 we never expected it to become popular. As two therapists practicing in Las Vegas we only hoped that one day one person who needed the show might find it useful. It began as a labor of love to introduce people to the idea of talking to a therapist.

But then the show caught fire. Each week more people found us as therapists and mental health advocates shared our show through social media. What made us different was that we wanted to be approachable, easy-going humans who happen to be experts in psychology. The tone is laid back and silly, self-effacing but compassionate and helpful, and people seemed to find it useful.

Before long a fan club emerged which began calling themselves the Therapods (a play on the show's title) which is best explained through a hijacked version of our logo.

As the show grew and the community supporting it grew we eventually came into contact with the most popular podcast in Las Vegas, "Matt and Mattingly's Ice Cream Social" who turned out to be huge advocates for mental health. After being guests on their show the guys even invited us to their annual podcast festival called Scoop Fest where we performed before a live audience of 200+ fans.

From there things got crazy. Our audience became international, we began having a backlog of letters to answer, and over time dozens of people started sharing how important the podcast was becoming to them.

As we celebrated our one-year anniversary we felt the importance of our project had grown way beyond its original design. Somehow we were now relevant, something that became undeniable when New York Times Best Selling Author Lori Gottlieb came on the show to share her newest book with our audience.

What began as two therapists creating an archive of useful information had become part of the response to the global mental health crisis. People were not only listening to the show but mobilizing into their communities to encourage mental wellness. Our show was catalyzing new creators to add their voices to the chorus. One of our listeners, Kate, even created a Pod Therapy Comic to illustrate mental health lessons for a visual audience.

So what's next? We want to do more. We aren't looking to quit our jobs and become podcast personalities. We just want to amplify the volume and bring the message of mental health to the many people who still need to hear it.

We believe that the most important aspect of therapy is a relationship with a helper. This is why in our show we have intentionally departed from the stuffy academic tone found in other psychology broadcasts and endeavored to be authentic, human, and real. Another way of saying it is we want to be the Car Talk of Therapy.

Remember, $100 supporters get a hand made Pod Therapy coffee tumbler made by Jim's Mom. You can even ask for specific colors, have your own name on the mug, and within reason ask for special art.

Jim's Mom decorates the tumblers by hand and the process takes four days to cure before they are ready for shipping. She's based in Tampa Florida and the turn around won't be as fast as you're used to with Amazon. Depending on how many orders she gets, she'll probably get it to you within 3 weeks.
