About

Pobasso and the Cucumbers - Musical

This is a great story that needs to be told.

If you are a performing arts teacher in a school, this Musical may be perfect for your next stage production.

It is part of Australia's history that is little known. The Aboriginal People of Northern Territory and Northern Queensland developed strong relationships with Seafaring people from other countries for many centuries before European settlement. Many people were drawn to Australia due to the abundance of Sea Cucumbers. These were collected and processed on the Australian Mainland for centuries. They were part of a vibrant and extensive trading system, one that brought them into annual contact with seagoing merchants from Indonesia, and linked them to civilisations as far away as China and Japan.

The plan is create a successful school musical, which is entertaining, light-hearted, full of catchy songs, which tells is set in this historical time and place, and focuses on the cultural links between the Macassan fishermen and the local communities.

While the story is fictional, and I will take a creative licence in filling in the gaps, one of the key characters, Pobasso, is not. In his later life he met with Matthew Flinders, while he was mapping the Australian Coastline in 1803.  He even had his portrait drawn.

This musical is designed to be great fun. It is not going to be politically heavy-handed, through the narrative it will gently address misconceptions of Terra Nullius and some of the more skewed accounts of history that can still be found in school libraries.

I am passionate about creating a wonderful musical and I am working with the acclaimed musician, Justin Whyte in arranging and recording the music. Examples of our recent collaborations is the musical 'Agua Blanca' which can be found at can be found at www.schoolmusicals.com.au

Risks and challenges

80% of the music is written, 50% of the script is written.
The key challenge is a get a professional studio recording of the songs, which is where all the major expense is. This for me is a labour of love. But I do need to pay Justin Whyte for his time and for the studio time. So Money is the key hurdle.
(All should be good as long as I, or Justin doesn't fall under a bus)
